Give ear to my prayer, O God; do not hide yourself from my supplication. 1 Listen to my prayer, O God, do not ignore my plea;
Attend to me, and answer me; I am troubled in my complaint. I am distraught 2 hear me and answer me. My thoughts trouble me and I am distraught
by the noise of the enemy, because of the clamor of the wicked. For they bring trouble upon me, and in anger they cherish enmity against me. 3 at the voice of the enemy, at the stares of the wicked; for they bring down suffering upon me and revile me in their anger.
My heart is in anguish within me, the terrors of death have fallen upon me. 4 My heart is in anguish within me; the terrors of death assail me.
Fear and trembling come upon me, and horror overwhelms me. 5 Fear and trembling have beset me; horror has overwhelmed me.
And I say, "O that I had wings like a dove! I would fly away and be at rest; 6 I said, "Oh, that I had the wings of a dove! I would fly away and be at rest--
truly, I would flee far away; I would lodge in the wilderness; (Selah) 7 I would flee far away and stay in the desert; "Selah"
I would hurry to find a shelter for myself from the raging wind and tempest." 8 I would hurry to my place of shelter, far from the tempest and storm."
Confuse, O Lord, confound their speech; for I see violence and strife in the city. 9 Confuse the wicked, O Lord, confound their speech, for I see violence and strife in the city.
Day and night they go around it on its walls, and iniquity and trouble are within it; 10 Day and night they prowl about on its walls; malice and abuse are within it.
ruin is in its midst; oppression and fraud do not depart from its marketplace. 11 Destructive forces are at work in the city; threats and lies never leave its streets.
It is not enemies who taunt me— I could bear that; it is not adversaries who deal insolently with me— I could hide from them. 12 If an enemy were insulting me, I could endure it; if a foe were raising himself against me, I could hide from him.
But it is you, my equal, my companion, my familiar friend, 13 But it is you, a man like myself, my companion, my close friend,
with whom I kept pleasant company; we walked in the house of God with the throng. 14 with whom I once enjoyed sweet fellowship as we walked with the throng at the house of God.
Let death come upon them; let them go down alive to Sheol; for evil is in their homes and in their hearts. 15 Let death take my enemies by surprise; let them go down alive to the grave, for evil finds lodging among them.
But I call upon God, and the Lord will save me. 16 But I call to God, and the LORD saves me.
Evening and morning and at noon I utter my complaint and moan, and he will hear my voice. 17 Evening, morning and noon I cry out in distress, and he hears my voice.
He will redeem me unharmed from the battle that I wage, for many are arrayed against me. 18 He ransoms me unharmed from the battle waged against me, even though many oppose me.
God, who is enthroned from of old, (Selah) will hear, and will humble them— because they do not change, and do not fear God. 19 God, who is enthroned forever, will hear them and afflict them-- "Selah" men who never change their ways and have no fear of God.
My companion laid hands on a friend and violated a covenant with me 20 My companion attacks his friends; he violates his covenant.
with speech smoother than butter, but with a heart set on war; with words that were softer than oil, but in fact were drawn swords. 21 His speech is smooth as butter, yet war is in his heart; his words are more soothing than oil, yet they are drawn swords.
Cast your burden on the Lord, and he will sustain you; he will never permit the righteous to be moved. 22 Cast your cares on the LORD and he will sustain you; he will never let the righteous fall.
But you, O God, will cast them down into the lowest pit; the bloodthirsty and treacherous shall not live out half their days. But I will trust in you. 23 But you, O God, will bring down the wicked into the pit of corruption; bloodthirsty and deceitful men will not live out half their days. But as for me, I trust in you.
