A Psalm of Asaph. O God, the heathen have come into thy inheritance; they have defiled thy holy temple; they have laid Jerusalem in ruins. 1 O God, the nations have invaded your inheritance; they have defiled your holy temple, they have reduced Jerusalem to rubble.
They have given the bodies of thy servants to the birds of the air for food, the flesh of thy saints to the beasts of the earth. 2 They have given the dead bodies of your servants as food to the birds of the air, the flesh of your saints to the beasts of the earth.
They have poured out their blood like water round about Jerusalem, and there was none to bury them. 3 They have poured out blood like water all around Jerusalem, and there is no one to bury the dead.
We have become a taunt to our neighbors, mocked and derided by those round about us. 4 We are objects of reproach to our neighbors, of scorn and derision to those around us.
How long, O LORD? Wilt thou be angry for ever? Will thy jealous wrath burn like fire? 5 How long, O LORD? Will you be angry forever? How long will your jealousy burn like fire?
Pour out thy anger on the nations that do not know thee, and on the kingdoms that do not call on thy name! 6 Pour out your wrath on the nations that do not acknowledge you, on the kingdoms that do not call on your name;
For they have devoured Jacob, and laid waste his habitation. 7 for they have devoured Jacob and destroyed his homeland.
Do not remember against us the iniquities of our forefathers; let thy compassion come speedily to meet us, for we are brought very low. 8 Do not hold against us the sins of the fathers; may your mercy come quickly to meet us, for we are in desperate need.
Help us, O God of our salvation, for the glory of thy name; deliver us, and forgive our sins, for thy name's sake! 9 Help us, O God our Savior, for the glory of your name; deliver us and forgive our sins for your name's sake.
Why should the nations say, "Where is their God?" Let the avenging of the outpoured blood of thy servants be known among the nations before our eyes! 10 Why should the nations say, "Where is their God?" Before our eyes, make known among the nations that you avenge the outpoured blood of your servants.
Let the groans of the prisoners come before thee; according to thy great power preserve those doomed to die! 11 May the groans of the prisoners come before you; by the strength of your arm preserve those condemned to die.
Return sevenfold into the bosom of our neighbors the taunts with which they have taunted thee, O Lord! 12 Pay back into the laps of our neighbors seven times the reproach they have hurled at you, O Lord.
Then we thy people, the flock of thy pasture, will give thanks to thee for ever; from generation to generation we will recount thy praise. 13 Then we your people, the sheep of your pasture, will praise you forever; from generation to generation we will recount your praise.
