And the fifth angel blew his trumpet, and I saw a star that had fallen from heaven to earth, and he was given the key to the shaft of the bottomless pit; 1 The fifth angel sounded his trumpet, and I saw a star that had fallen from the sky to the earth. The star was given the key to the shaft of the Abyss.
he opened the shaft of the bottomless pit, and from the shaft rose smoke like the smoke of a great furnace, and the sun and the air were darkened with the smoke from the shaft. 2 When he opened the Abyss, smoke rose from it like the smoke from a gigantic furnace. The sun and sky were darkened by the smoke from the Abyss.
Then from the smoke came locusts on the earth, and they were given authority like the authority of scorpions of the earth. 3 And out of the smoke locusts came down upon the earth and were given power like that of scorpions of the earth.
They were told not to damage the grass of the earth or any green growth or any tree, but only those people who do not have the seal of God on their foreheads. 4 They were told not to harm the grass of the earth or any plant or tree, but only those people who did not have the seal of God on their foreheads.
They were allowed to torture them for five months, but not to kill them, and their torture was like the torture of a scorpion when it stings someone. 5 They were not given power to kill them, but only to torture them for five months. And the agony they suffered was like that of the sting of a scorpion when it strikes a man.
And in those days people will seek death but will not find it; they will long to die, but death will flee from them. 6 During those days men will seek death, but will not find it; they will long to die, but death will elude them.
In appearance the locusts were like horses equipped for battle. On their heads were what looked like crowns of gold; their faces were like human faces, 7 The locusts looked like horses prepared for battle. On their heads they wore something like crowns of gold, and their faces resembled human faces.
their hair like women's hair, and their teeth like lions' teeth; 8 Their hair was like women's hair, and their teeth were like lions' teeth.
they had scales like iron breastplates, and the noise of their wings was like the noise of many chariots with horses rushing into battle. 9 They had breastplates like breastplates of iron, and the sound of their wings was like the thundering of many horses and chariots rushing into battle.
They have tails like scorpions, with stingers, and in their tails is their power to harm people for five months. 10 They had tails and stings like scorpions, and in their tails they had power to torment people for five months.
They have as king over them the angel of the bottomless pit; his name in Hebrew is Abaddon, and in Greek he is called Apollyon. 11 They had as king over them the angel of the Abyss, whose name in Hebrew is Abaddon, and in Greek, Apollyon.
The first woe has passed. There are still two woes to come. 12 The first woe is past; two other woes are yet to come.
