Lexham English Bible (LEB) New International Version (NIV)
Therefore you are without excuse, O man, every one [of you] who passes judgment. For in that which you pass judgment on someone else, you condemn yourself, for you who are passing judgment are doing the same [things]. 1 You, therefore, have no excuse, you who pass judgment on someone else, for at whatever point you judge the other, you are condemning yourself, because you who pass judgment do the same things.
Now we know that the judgment of God is according to truth against those who do such things. 2 Now we know that God's judgment against those who do such things is based on truth.
But do you think this, O man who passes judgment on those who do such things, and who does the same [things], that you will escape the judgment of God? 3 So when you, a mere man, pass judgment on them and yet do the same things, do you think you will escape God's judgment?
Or do you despise the wealth of his kindness and forbearance and patience, not knowing that the kindness of God leads you to repentance? 4 Or do you show contempt for the riches of his kindness, tolerance and patience, not realizing that God's kindness leads you toward repentance?
But because of your stubbornness and unrepentant heart, you are storing up for yourself wrath in the day of wrath and of the revelation of the righteous judgment of God, 5 But because of your stubbornness and your unrepentant heart, you are storing up wrath against yourself for the day of God's wrath, when his righteous judgment will be revealed.
who will reward each one according to his works: 6 God "will give to each person according to what he has done."
to those who, by perseverance in good work, seek glory and honor and immortality, eternal life, 7 To those who by persistence in doing good seek glory, honor and immortality, he will give eternal life.
but to those [who act] from selfish ambition and who disobey the truth, but who obey unrighteousness, wrath and anger. 8 But for those who are self-seeking and who reject the truth and follow evil, there will be wrath and anger.
[There will be] affliction and distress for every {human being} who does evil, of the Jew first and of the Greek, 9 There will be trouble and distress for every human being who does evil: first for the Jew, then for the Gentile;
but glory and honor and peace to everyone who does good, to the Jew first and to the Greek. 10 but glory, honor and peace for everyone who does good: first for the Jew, then for the Gentile.
For [there] is no partiality with God. 11 For God does not show favoritism.
For as many as have sinned without law will also perish without law, and as many as have sinned under the law will be judged by the law. 12 All who sin apart from the law will also perish apart from the law, and all who sin under the law will be judged by the law.
For it is not the hearers of the law [who are] righteous in the sight of God, but the doers of the law will be declared righteous. 13 For it is not those who hear the law who are righteous in God's sight, but it is those who obey the law who will be declared righteous.
For whenever the Gentiles, who do not have the law, do by nature the things of the law, these, [although they] do not have the law, are a law to themselves, 14 (Indeed, when Gentiles, who do not have the law, do by nature things required by the law, they are a law for themselves, even though they do not have the law,
who show the work of the law written on their hearts, their conscience bearing witness and their thoughts [one] after another accusing or even defending them 15 since they show that the requirements of the law are written on their hearts, their consciences also bearing witness, and their thoughts now accusing, now even defending them.)
on the day when God judges the secret things of people, according to my gospel, through Christ Jesus. 16 This will take place on the day when God will judge men's secrets through Jesus Christ, as my gospel declares.
But if you call yourself a Jew and rely on the law and boast in God 17 Now you, if you call yourself a Jew; if you rely on the law and brag about your relationship to God;
and know his will and approve the things that are superior, [because you] are instructed by the law, 18 if you know his will and approve of what is superior because you are instructed by the law;
and are confident [that] you yourself are a guide of the blind, a light of those in darkness, 19 if you are convinced that you are a guide for the blind, a light for those who are in the dark,
an instructor of the foolish, a teacher of the immature, having the embodiment of knowledge and of the truth in the law. 20 an instructor of the foolish, a teacher of infants, because you have in the law the embodiment of knowledge and truth--
Therefore, the one who teaches someone else, do you not teach yourself? The one who preaches not to steal, do you steal? 21 you, then, who teach others, do you not teach yourself ? You who preach against stealing, do you steal?
The one who says not to commit adultery, do you commit adultery? The one who abhors idols, do you rob temples? 22 You who say that people should not commit adultery, do you commit adultery? You who abhor idols, do you rob temples?
Who boast in the law, by the transgression of the law you dishonor God! 23 You who brag about the law, do you dishonor God by breaking the law?
For just as it is written, "The name of God is blasphemed among the Gentiles because of you." 24 As it is written: "God's name is blasphemed among the Gentiles because of you."
For circumcision is of value if you do the law, but if you should be a transgressor of the law, your circumcision has become uncircumcision. 25 Circumcision has value if you observe the law, but if you break the law, you have become as though you had not been circumcised.
Therefore, if the uncircumcised person follows the requirements of the law, will not his uncircumcision be credited for circumcision? 26 If those who are not circumcised keep the law's requirements, will they not be regarded as though they were circumcised?
And the uncircumcised person by nature who carries out the law will judge you who, [though provided] with {the precise written code} and circumcision [are] a transgressor of the law. 27 The one who is not circumcised physically and yet obeys the law will condemn you who, even though you have the written code and circumcision, are a lawbreaker.
For the Jew is not {one outwardly}, nor [is] circumcision {outwardly}, in the flesh. 28 A man is not a Jew if he is only one outwardly, nor is circumcision merely outward and physical.
But the Jew {is one inwardly}, and circumcision [is] of the heart, by the Spirit, not by the letter, whose praise [is] not from people but from God. 29 No, a man is a Jew if he is one inwardly; and circumcision is circumcision of the heart, by the Spirit, not by the written code. Such a man's praise is not from men, but from God.
