1 Corinthians 1

DBY 1 Paul, [a] called apostle of Jesus Christ, by God's will, and Sosthenes the brother, NIV 1 Paul, called to be an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, and our brother Sosthenes, DBY 2 to the assembly of God which is in Corinth, to [those] sanctified in Christ Jesus, called saints, with all that in every place call on the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, both theirs and ours: NIV 2 To the church of God in Corinth, to those sanctified in Christ Jesus and called to be holy, together with all those everywhere who call on the name of our Lord Jesus Christ--their Lord and ours: DBY 3 Grace to you and peace from God our Father, and [the] Lord Jesus Christ. NIV 3 Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. DBY 4 I thank my God always about you, in respect of the grace of God given to you in Christ Jesus; NIV 4 I always thank God for you because of his grace given you in Christ Jesus. DBY 5 that in everything ye have been enriched in him, in all word [of doctrine], and all knowledge, NIV 5 For in him you have been enriched in every way--in all your speaking and in all your knowledge-- DBY 6 (according as the testimony of the Christ has been confirmed in you,) NIV 6 because our testimony about Christ was confirmed in you. DBY 7 so that ye come short in no gift, awaiting the revelation of our Lord Jesus Christ; NIV 7 Therefore you do not lack any spiritual gift as you eagerly wait for our Lord Jesus Christ to be revealed. DBY 8 who shall also confirm you to [the] end, unimpeachable in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. NIV 8 He will keep you strong to the end, so that you will be blameless on the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. DBY 9 God [is] faithful, by whom ye have been called into [the] fellowship of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord. NIV 9 God, who has called you into fellowship with his Son Jesus Christ our Lord, is faithful. DBY 10 Now I exhort you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye all say the same thing, and that there be not among you divisions; but that ye be perfectly united in the same mind and in the same opinion. NIV 10 I appeal to you, brothers, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree with one another so that there may be no divisions among you and that you may be perfectly united in mind and thought. DBY 11 For it has been shewn to me concerning you, my brethren, by those of [the house of] Chloe, that there are strifes among you. NIV 11 My brothers, some from Chloe's household have informed me that there are quarrels among you. DBY 12 But I speak of this, that each of you says, *I* am of Paul, and *I* of Apollos, and *I* of Cephas, and *I* of Christ. NIV 12 What I mean is this: One of you says, "I follow Paul"; another, "I follow Apollos"; another, "I follow Cephas "; still another, "I follow Christ." DBY 13 Is the Christ divided? has Paul been crucified for you? or have ye been baptised unto the name of Paul? NIV 13 Is Christ divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Were you baptized into the name of Paul? DBY 14 I thank God that I have baptised none of you, unless Crispus and Gaius, NIV 14 I am thankful that I did not baptize any of you except Crispus and Gaius, DBY 15 that no one may say that I have baptised unto my own name. NIV 15 so no one can say that you were baptized into my name. DBY 16 Yes, I baptised also the house of Stephanas; for the rest I know not if I have baptised any other. NIV 16 (Yes, I also baptized the household of Stephanas; beyond that, I don't remember if I baptized anyone else.) DBY 17 For Christ has not sent me to baptise, but to preach glad tidings; not in wisdom of word, that the cross of the Christ may not be made vain. NIV 17 For Christ did not send me to baptize, but to preach the gospel--not with words of human wisdom, lest the cross of Christ be emptied of its power. DBY 18 For the word of the cross is to them that perish foolishness, but to us that are saved it is God's power. NIV 18 For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. DBY 19 For it is written, I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and set aside the understanding of the understanding ones. NIV 19 For it is written: "I will destroy the wisdom of the wise; the intelligence of the intelligent I will frustrate." DBY 20 Where [is the] wise? where scribe? where disputer of this world? has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world? NIV 20 Where is the wise man? Where is the scholar? Where is the philosopher of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world? DBY 21 For since, in the wisdom of God, the world by wisdom has not known God, God has been pleased by the foolishness of the preaching to save those that believe. NIV 21 For since in the wisdom of God the world through its wisdom did not know him, God was pleased through the foolishness of what was preached to save those who believe. DBY 22 Since Jews indeed ask for signs, and Greeks seek wisdom; NIV 22 Jews demand miraculous signs and Greeks look for wisdom, DBY 23 but *we* preach Christ crucified, to Jews an offence, and to nations foolishness; NIV 23 but we preach Christ crucified: a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles, DBY 24 but to those that [are] called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ God's power and God's wisdom. NIV 24 but to those whom God has called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. DBY 25 Because the foolishness of God is wiser than men, and the weakness of God is stronger than men. NIV 25 For the foolishness of God is wiser than man's wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than man's strength. DBY 26 For consider your calling, brethren, that [there are] not many wise according to flesh, not many powerful, not many high-born. NIV 26 Brothers, think of what you were when you were called. Not many of you were wise by human standards; not many were influential; not many were of noble birth. DBY 27 But God has chosen the foolish things of the world, that he may put to shame the wise; and God has chosen the weak things of the world, that he may put to shame the strong things; NIV 27 But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong. DBY 28 and the ignoble things of the world, and the despised, has God chosen, [and] things that are not, that he may annul the things that are; NIV 28 He chose the lowly things of this world and the despised things--and the things that are not--to nullify the things that are, DBY 29 so that no flesh should boast before God. NIV 29 so that no one may boast before him. DBY 30 But of him are *ye* in Christ Jesus, who has been made to us wisdom from God, and righteousness, and holiness, and redemption; NIV 30 It is because of him that you are in Christ Jesus, who has become for us wisdom from God--that is, our righteousness, holiness and redemption. DBY 31 that according as it is written, He that boasts, let him boast in [the] Lord. NIV 31 Therefore, as it is written: "Let him who boasts boast in the Lord."
