1 Corinthians 11

ESV 1 Be imitators of me, as I am of Christ. NIV 1 Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ. ESV 2 Now I commend you because you remember me in everything and maintain the traditions even as I delivered them to you. NIV 2 I praise you for remembering me in everything and for holding to the teachings, just as I passed them on to you. ESV 3 But I want you to understand that the head of every man is Christ, the head of a wife is her husband, and the head of Christ is God. NIV 3 Now I want you to realize that the head of every man is Christ, and the head of the woman is man, and the head of Christ is God. ESV 4 Every man who prays or prophesies with his head covered dishonors his head, NIV 4 Every man who prays or prophesies with his head covered dishonors his head. ESV 5 but every wife who prays or prophesies with her head uncovered dishonors her head, since it is the same as if her head were shaven. NIV 5 And every woman who prays or prophesies with her head uncovered dishonors her head--it is just as though her head were shaved. ESV 6 For if a wife will not cover her head, then she should cut her hair short. But since it is disgraceful for a wife to cut off her hair or shave her head, let her cover her head. NIV 6 If a woman does not cover her head, she should have her hair cut off; and if it is a disgrace for a woman to have her hair cut or shaved off, she should cover her head. ESV 7 For a man ought not to cover his head, since he is the image and glory of God, but woman is the glory of man. NIV 7 A man ought not to cover his head, since he is the image and glory of God; but the woman is the glory of man. ESV 8 For man was not made from woman, but woman from man. NIV 8 For man did not come from woman, but woman from man; ESV 9 Neither was man created for woman, but woman for man. NIV 9 neither was man created for woman, but woman for man. ESV 10 That is why a wife ought to have a symbol of authority on her head, because of the angels. NIV 10 For this reason, and because of the angels, the woman ought to have a sign of authority on her head. ESV 11 Nevertheless, in the Lord woman is not independent of man nor man of woman; NIV 11 In the Lord, however, woman is not independent of man, nor is man independent of woman. ESV 12 for as woman was made from man, so man is now born of woman. And all things are from God. NIV 12 For as woman came from man, so also man is born of woman. But everything comes from God. ESV 13 Judge for yourselves: is it proper for a wife to pray to God with her head uncovered? NIV 13 Judge for yourselves: Is it proper for a woman to pray to God with her head uncovered? ESV 14 Does not nature itself teach you that if a man wears long hair it is a disgrace for him, NIV 14 Does not the very nature of things teach you that if a man has long hair, it is a disgrace to him, ESV 15 but if a woman has long hair, it is her glory? For her hair is given to her for a covering. NIV 15 but that if a woman has long hair, it is her glory? For long hair is given to her as a covering. ESV 16 If anyone is inclined to be contentious, we have no such practice, nor do the churches of God. NIV 16 If anyone wants to be contentious about this, we have no other practice--nor do the churches of God. ESV 17 But in the following instructions I do not commend you, because when you come together it is not for the better but for the worse. NIV 17 In the following directives I have no praise for you, for your meetings do more harm than good. ESV 18 For, in the first place, when you come together as a church, I hear that there are divisions among you. And I believe it in part, NIV 18 In the first place, I hear that when you come together as a church, there are divisions among you, and to some extent I believe it. ESV 19 for there must be factions among you in order that those who are genuine among you may be recognized. NIV 19 No doubt there have to be differences among you to show which of you have God's approval. ESV 20 When you come together, it is not the Lord's supper that you eat. NIV 20 When you come together, it is not the Lord's Supper you eat, ESV 21 For in eating, each one goes ahead with his own meal. One goes hungry, another gets drunk. NIV 21 for as you eat, each of you goes ahead without waiting for anybody else. One remains hungry, another gets drunk. ESV 22 What! Do you not have houses to eat and drink in? Or do you despise the church of God and humiliate those who have nothing? What shall I say to you? Shall I commend you in this? No, I will not. NIV 22 Don't you have homes to eat and drink in? Or do you despise the church of God and humiliate those who have nothing? What shall I say to you? Shall I praise you for this? Certainly not! ESV 23 For I received from the Lord what I also delivered to you, that the Lord Jesus on the night when he was betrayed took bread, NIV 23 For I received from the Lord what I also passed on to you: The Lord Jesus, on the night he was betrayed, took bread, ESV 24 and when he had given thanks, he broke it, and said, "This is my body which is for you. Do this in remembrance of me." NIV 24 and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, "This is my body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of me." ESV 25 In the same way also he took the cup, after supper, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me." NIV 25 In the same way, after supper he took the cup, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in my blood; do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me." ESV 26 For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord's death until he comes. NIV 26 For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord's death until he comes. ESV 27 Whoever, therefore, eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty concerning the body and blood of the Lord. NIV 27 Therefore, whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of sinning against the body and blood of the Lord. ESV 28 Let a person examine himself, then, and so eat of the bread and drink of the cup. NIV 28 A man ought to examine himself before he eats of the bread and drinks of the cup. ESV 29 For anyone who eats and drinks without discerning the body eats and drinks judgment on himself. NIV 29 For anyone who eats and drinks without recognizing the body of the Lord eats and drinks judgment on himself. ESV 30 That is why many of you are weak and ill, and some have died. NIV 30 That is why many among you are weak and sick, and a number of you have fallen asleep. ESV 31 But if we judged ourselves truly, we would not be judged. NIV 31 But if we judged ourselves, we would not come under judgment. ESV 32 But when we are judged by the Lord, we are disciplined so that we may not be condemned along with the world. NIV 32 When we are judged by the Lord, we are being disciplined so that we will not be condemned with the world. ESV 33 So then, my brothers, when you come together to eat, wait for one another-- NIV 33 So then, my brothers, when you come together to eat, wait for each other. ESV 34 if anyone is hungry, let him eat at home--so that when you come together it will not be for judgment. About the other things I will give directions when I come. NIV 34 If anyone is hungry, he should eat at home, so that when you meet together it may not result in judgment. And when I come I will give further directions.
