1 Corinthians 11

RHE 1 Be ye followers of me, as I also am of Christ. NIV 1 Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ. RHE 2 Now I praise you, brethren, that in all things you are mindful of me and keep my ordinances as I have delivered them to you. NIV 2 I praise you for remembering me in everything and for holding to the teachings, just as I passed them on to you. RHE 3 But I would have you know that the head of every man is Christ: and the head of the woman is the man: and the head of Christ is God. NIV 3 Now I want you to realize that the head of every man is Christ, and the head of the woman is man, and the head of Christ is God. RHE 4 Every man praying or prophesying with his head covered disgraceth his head. NIV 4 Every man who prays or prophesies with his head covered dishonors his head. RHE 5 But every woman praying or prophesying with her head not covered disgraceth her head: for it is all one as if she were shaven. NIV 5 And every woman who prays or prophesies with her head uncovered dishonors her head--it is just as though her head were shaved. RHE 6 For if a woman be not covered, let her be shorn. But if it be a shame to a woman to be shorn or made bald, let her cover her head. NIV 6 If a woman does not cover her head, she should have her hair cut off; and if it is a disgrace for a woman to have her hair cut or shaved off, she should cover her head. RHE 7 The man indeed ought not to cover his head: because he is the image and glory of God. But the woman is the glory of the man. NIV 7 A man ought not to cover his head, since he is the image and glory of God; but the woman is the glory of man. RHE 8 For the man is not of the woman: but the woman of the man. NIV 8 For man did not come from woman, but woman from man; RHE 9 For the man was not created for the woman: but the woman for the man. NIV 9 neither was man created for woman, but woman for man. RHE 10 Therefore ought the woman to have a power over her head, because of the angels. NIV 10 For this reason, and because of the angels, the woman ought to have a sign of authority on her head. RHE 11 But yet neither is the man without the woman, nor the woman without the man, in the Lord. NIV 11 In the Lord, however, woman is not independent of man, nor is man independent of woman. RHE 12 For as the woman is of the man, so also is the man by the woman: but all things of God. NIV 12 For as woman came from man, so also man is born of woman. But everything comes from God. RHE 13 You yourselves judge. Doth it become a woman to pray unto God uncovered? NIV 13 Judge for yourselves: Is it proper for a woman to pray to God with her head uncovered? RHE 14 Doth not even nature itself teach you that a man indeed, if he nourish his hair, it is a shame unto him? NIV 14 Does not the very nature of things teach you that if a man has long hair, it is a disgrace to him, RHE 15 But if a woman nourish her hair, it is a glory to her; for her hair is given to her for a covering. NIV 15 but that if a woman has long hair, it is her glory? For long hair is given to her as a covering. RHE 16 But if any man seem to be contentious, we have no such custom, nor the Church of God. NIV 16 If anyone wants to be contentious about this, we have no other practice--nor do the churches of God. RHE 17 Now this I ordain: not praising you, that you come together, not for the better, but for the worse. NIV 17 In the following directives I have no praise for you, for your meetings do more harm than good. RHE 18 For first of all I hear that when you come together in the church, there are schisms among you. And in part I believe it. NIV 18 In the first place, I hear that when you come together as a church, there are divisions among you, and to some extent I believe it. RHE 19 For there must be also heresies: that they also, who are approved may be made manifest among you. NIV 19 No doubt there have to be differences among you to show which of you have God's approval. RHE 20 When you come therefore together into one place, it is not now to eat the Lord’s supper. NIV 20 When you come together, it is not the Lord's Supper you eat, RHE 21 For every one taketh before his own supper to eat. And one indeed is hungry and another is drunk. NIV 21 for as you eat, each of you goes ahead without waiting for anybody else. One remains hungry, another gets drunk. RHE 22 What, have you no houses to eat and to drink in? Or despise ye the church of God and put them to shame that have not? What shall I say to you? Do I praise you? In this I praise you not. NIV 22 Don't you have homes to eat and drink in? Or do you despise the church of God and humiliate those who have nothing? What shall I say to you? Shall I praise you for this? Certainly not! RHE 23 For I have received of the Lord that which also I delivered unto you, that the Lord Jesus, the same night in which he was betrayed, took bread, NIV 23 For I received from the Lord what I also passed on to you: The Lord Jesus, on the night he was betrayed, took bread, RHE 24 And giving thanks, broke and said: Take ye and eat: This is my body, which shall be delivered for you. This do for the commemoration of me. NIV 24 and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, "This is my body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of me." RHE 25 In like manner also the chalice, after he had supped, saying: This chalice is the new testament in my blood. This do ye, as often as you shall drink, for the commemoration of me. NIV 25 In the same way, after supper he took the cup, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in my blood; do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me." RHE 26 For as often as you shall eat this bread and drink the chalice, you shall shew the death of the Lord, until he come. NIV 26 For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord's death until he comes. RHE 27 Therefore, whosoever shall eat this bread, or drink the chalice of the Lord unworthily, shall be guilty of the body and of the blood of the Lord. NIV 27 Therefore, whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of sinning against the body and blood of the Lord. RHE 28 But let a man prove himself: and so let him eat of that bread and drink of the chalice. NIV 28 A man ought to examine himself before he eats of the bread and drinks of the cup. RHE 29 For he that eateth and drinketh unworthily eateth and drinketh judgment to himself, not discerning the body of the Lord. NIV 29 For anyone who eats and drinks without recognizing the body of the Lord eats and drinks judgment on himself. RHE 30 Therefore are there many infirm and weak among you: and many sleep. NIV 30 That is why many among you are weak and sick, and a number of you have fallen asleep. RHE 31 But if we would judge ourselves, we should not be judged. NIV 31 But if we judged ourselves, we would not come under judgment. RHE 32 But whilst we are judged, we are chastised by the Lord, that we be not condemned with this world. NIV 32 When we are judged by the Lord, we are being disciplined so that we will not be condemned with the world. RHE 33 Wherefore, my brethren, when you come together to eat, wait for one another. NIV 33 So then, my brothers, when you come together to eat, wait for each other. RHE 34 If any man be hungry, let him eat at home; that you come not together unto judgment. And the rest I will set in order, when I come. NIV 34 If anyone is hungry, he should eat at home, so that when you meet together it may not result in judgment. And when I come I will give further directions.
