1 John 3

GNT 1 See how much the Father has loved us! His love is so great that we are called God's children - and so, in fact, we are. This is why the world does not know us: it has not known God. NIV 1 How great is the love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are! The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him. GNT 2 My dear friends, we are now God's children, but it is not yet clear what we shall become. But we know that when Christ appears, we shall be like him, because we shall see him as he really is. NIV 2 Dear friends, now we are children of God, and what we will be has not yet been made known. But we know that when he appears, we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is. GNT 3 Everyone who has this hope in Christ keeps himself pure, just as Christ is pure. NIV 3 Everyone who has this hope in him purifies himself, just as he is pure. GNT 4 Whoever sins is guilty of breaking God's law, because sin is a breaking of the law. NIV 4 Everyone who sins breaks the law; in fact, sin is lawlessness. GNT 5 You know that Christ appeared in order to take away sins, and that there is no sin in him. NIV 5 But you know that he appeared so that he might take away our sins. And in him is no sin. GNT 6 So everyone who lives in union with Christ does not continue to sin; but whoever continues to sin has never seen him or known him. NIV 6 No one who lives in him keeps on sinning. No one who continues to sin has either seen him or known him. GNT 7 Let no one deceive you, my children! Whoever does what is right is righteous, just as Christ is righteous. NIV 7 Dear children, do not let anyone lead you astray. He who does what is right is righteous, just as he is righteous. GNT 8 Whoever continues to sin belongs to the Devil, because the Devil has sinned from the very beginning. The Son of God appeared for this very reason, to destroy what the Devil had done. NIV 8 He who does what is sinful is of the devil, because the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the devil's work. GNT 9 Those who are children of God do not continue to sin, for God's very nature is in them; and because God is their Father, they cannot continue to sin. NIV 9 No one who is born of God will continue to sin, because God's seed remains in him; he cannot go on sinning, because he has been born of God. GNT 10 Here is the clear difference between God's children and the Devil's children: those who do not do what is right or do not love others are not God's children. NIV 10 This is how we know who the children of God are and who the children of the devil are: Anyone who does not do what is right is not a child of God; nor is anyone who does not love his brother. GNT 11 The message you heard from the very beginning is this: we must love one another. NIV 11 This is the message you heard from the beginning: We should love one another. GNT 12 We must not be like Cain; he belonged to the Evil One and murdered his own brother Abel. Why did Cain murder him? Because the things he himself did were wrong, and the things his brother did were right. NIV 12 Do not be like Cain, who belonged to the evil one and murdered his brother. And why did he murder him? Because his own actions were evil and his brother's were righteous. GNT 13 So do not be surprised, my friends, if the people of the world hate you. NIV 13 Do not be surprised, my brothers, if the world hates you. GNT 14 We know that we have left death and come over into life; we know it because we love others. Those who do not love are still under the power of death. NIV 14 We know that we have passed from death to life, because we love our brothers. Anyone who does not love remains in death. GNT 15 Those who hate others are murderers, and you know that murderers do not have eternal life in them. NIV 15 Anyone who hates his brother is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life in him. GNT 16 This is how we know what love is: Christ gave his life for us. We too, then, ought to give our lives for others! NIV 16 This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers. GNT 17 If we are rich and see others in need, yet close our hearts against them, how can we claim that we love God? NIV 17 If anyone has material possessions and sees his brother in need but has no pity on him, how can the love of God be in him? GNT 18 My children, our love should not be just words and talk; it must be true love, which shows itself in action. NIV 18 Dear children, let us not love with words or tongue but with actions and in truth. GNT 19 This, then, is how we will know that we belong to the truth; this is how we will be confident in God's presence. NIV 19 This then is how we know that we belong to the truth, and how we set our hearts at rest in his presence GNT 20 If our conscience condemns us, we know that God is greater than our conscience and that he knows everything. NIV 20 whenever our hearts condemn us. For God is greater than our hearts, and he knows everything. GNT 21 And so, my dear friends, if our conscience does not condemn us, we have courage in God's presence. NIV 21 Dear friends, if our hearts do not condemn us, we have confidence before God GNT 22 We receive from him whatever we ask, because we obey his commands and do what pleases him. NIV 22 and receive from him anything we ask, because we obey his commands and do what pleases him. GNT 23 What he commands is that we believe in his Son Jesus Christ and love one another, just as Christ commanded us. NIV 23 And this is his command: to believe in the name of his Son, Jesus Christ, and to love one another as he commanded us. GNT 24 Those who obey God's commands live in union with God and God lives in union with them. And because of the Spirit that God has given us we know that God lives in union with us. NIV 24 Those who obey his commands live in him, and he in them. And this is how we know that he lives in us: We know it by the Spirit he gave us.
