1 Kings 17

MSG 1 And then this happened: Elijah the Tishbite, from among the settlers of Gilead, confronted Ahab: "As surely as God lives, the God of Israel before whom I stand in obedient service, the next years are going to see a total drought - not a drop of dew or rain unless I say otherwise." NIV 1 Now Elijah the Tishbite, from Tishbe in Gilead, said to Ahab, "As the LORD, the God of Israel, lives, whom I serve, there will be neither dew nor rain in the next few years except at my word." MSG 2 God then told Elijah, NIV 2 Then the word of the LORD came to Elijah: MSG 3 "Get out of here, and fast. Head east and hide out at the Kerith Ravine on the other side of the Jordan River. NIV 3 "Leave here, turn eastward and hide in the Kerith Ravine, east of the Jordan. MSG 4 You can drink fresh water from the brook; I've ordered the ravens to feed you." NIV 4 You will drink from the brook, and I have ordered the ravens to feed you there." MSG 5 Elijah obeyed God's orders. He went and camped in the Kerith canyon on the other side of the Jordan. NIV 5 So he did what the LORD had told him. He went to the Kerith Ravine, east of the Jordan, and stayed there. MSG 6 And sure enough, ravens brought him his meals, both breakfast and supper, and he drank from the brook. NIV 6 The ravens brought him bread and meat in the morning and bread and meat in the evening, and he drank from the brook. MSG 7 Eventually the brook dried up because of the drought. NIV 7 Some time later the brook dried up because there had been no rain in the land. MSG 8 Then God spoke to him: NIV 8 Then the word of the LORD came to him: MSG 9 "Get up and go to Zarephath in Sidon and live there. I've instructed a woman who lives there, a widow, to feed you." NIV 9 "Go at once to Zarephath of Sidon and stay there. I have commanded a widow in that place to supply you with food." MSG 10 So he got up and went to Zarephath. As he came to the entrance of the village he met a woman, a widow, gathering firewood. He asked her, "Please, would you bring me a little water in a jug? I need a drink." NIV 10 So he went to Zarephath. When he came to the town gate, a widow was there gathering sticks. He called to her and asked, "Would you bring me a little water in a jar so I may have a drink?" MSG 11 As she went to get it, he called out, "And while you're at it, would you bring me something to eat?" NIV 11 As she was going to get it, he called, "And bring me, please, a piece of bread." MSG 12 She said, "I swear, as surely as your God lives, I don't have so much as a biscuit. I have a handful of flour in a jar and a little oil in a bottle; you found me scratching together just enough firewood to make a last meal for my son and me. After we eat it, we'll die." NIV 12 "As surely as the LORD your God lives," she replied, "I don't have any bread--only a handful of flour in a jar and a little oil in a jug. I am gathering a few sticks to take home and make a meal for myself and my son, that we may eat it--and die." MSG 13 Elijah said to her, "Don't worry about a thing. Go ahead and do what you've said. But first make a small biscuit for me and bring it back here. Then go ahead and make a meal from what's left for you and your son. NIV 13 Elijah said to her, "Don't be afraid. Go home and do as you have said. But first make a small cake of bread for me from what you have and bring it to me, and then make something for yourself and your son. MSG 14 This is the word of the God of Israel: 'The jar of flour will not run out and the bottle of oil will not become empty before God sends rain on the land and ends this drought.'" NIV 14 For this is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: 'The jar of flour will not be used up and the jug of oil will not run dry until the day the LORD gives rain on the land.' " MSG 15 And she went right off and did it, did just as Elijah asked. And it turned out as he said - daily food for her and her family. NIV 15 She went away and did as Elijah had told her. So there was food every day for Elijah and for the woman and her family. MSG 16 The jar of meal didn't run out and the bottle of oil didn't become empty: God's promise fulfilled to the letter, exactly as Elijah had delivered it! NIV 16 For the jar of flour was not used up and the jug of oil did not run dry, in keeping with the word of the LORD spoken by Elijah. MSG 17 Later on the woman's son became sick. The sickness took a turn for the worse - and then he stopped breathing. NIV 17 Some time later the son of the woman who owned the house became ill. He grew worse and worse, and finally stopped breathing. MSG 18 The woman said to Elijah, "Why did you ever show up here in the first place - a holy man barging in, exposing my sins, and killing my son?" NIV 18 She said to Elijah, "What do you have against me, man of God? Did you come to remind me of my sin and kill my son?" MSG 19 Elijah said, "Hand me your son." NIV 19 "Give me your son," Elijah replied. He took him from her arms, carried him to the upper room where he was staying, and laid him on his bed. MSG 20 Then he prayed, "O God, my God, why have you brought this terrible thing on this widow who has opened her home to me? Why have you killed her son?" NIV 20 Then he cried out to the LORD, "O LORD my God, have you brought tragedy also upon this widow I am staying with, by causing her son to die?" MSG 21 Three times he stretched himself out full-length on the boy, praying with all his might, "God, my God, put breath back into this boy's body!" NIV 21 Then he stretched himself out on the boy three times and cried to the LORD, "O LORD my God, let this boy's life return to him!" MSG 22 God listened to Elijah's prayer and put breath back into his body - he was alive! NIV 22 The LORD heard Elijah's cry, and the boy's life returned to him, and he lived. MSG 23 Elijah picked the boy up, carried him downstairs from the loft, and gave him to his mother. "Here's your son," said Elijah, "alive!" NIV 23 Elijah picked up the child and carried him down from the room into the house. He gave him to his mother and said, "Look, your son is alive!" MSG 24 The woman said to Elijah, "I see it all now - you are a holy man. When you speak, God speaks - a true word!" NIV 24 Then the woman said to Elijah, "Now I know that you are a man of God and that the word of the LORD from your mouth is the truth."
