1 Kings 6

ASV 1 And it came to pass in the four hundred and eightieth year after the children of Israel were come out of the land of Egypt, in the fourth year of Solomon's reign over Israel, in the month Ziv, which is the second month, that he began to build the house of Jehovah. NIV 1 In the four hundred and eightieth year after the Israelites had come out of Egypt, in the fourth year of Solomon's reign over Israel, in the month of Ziv, the second month, he began to build the temple of the LORD. ASV 2 And the house which king Solomon built for Jehovah, the length thereof was threescore cubits, and the breadth thereof twenty [cubits], and the height thereof thirty cubits. NIV 2 The temple that King Solomon built for the LORD was sixty cubits long, twenty wide and thirty high. ASV 3 And the porch before the temple of the house, twenty cubits was the length thereof, according to the breadth of the house; [and] ten cubits was the breadth thereof before the house. NIV 3 The portico at the front of the main hall of the temple extended the width of the temple, that is twenty cubits, and projected ten cubits from the front of the temple. ASV 4 And for the house he made windows of fixed lattice-work. NIV 4 He made narrow clerestory windows in the temple. ASV 5 And against the wall of the house he built stories round about, against the walls of the house round about, both of the temple and of the oracle; and he made side-chambers round about. NIV 5 Against the walls of the main hall and inner sanctuary he built a structure around the building, in which there were side rooms. ASV 6 The nethermost story was five cubits broad, and the middle was six cubits broad, and the third was seven cubits broad; for on the outside he made offsets [in the wall] of the house round about, that [the beams] should not have hold in the walls of the house. NIV 6 The lowest floor was five cubits wide, the middle floor six cubits and the third floor seven. He made offset ledges around the outside of the temple so that nothing would be inserted into the temple walls. ASV 7 And the house, when it was in building, was built of stone made ready at the quarry; and there was neither hammer nor axe nor any tool of iron heard in the house, while it was in building. NIV 7 In building the temple, only blocks dressed at the quarry were used, and no hammer, chisel or any other iron tool was heard at the temple site while it was being built. ASV 8 The door for the middle side-chambers was in the right side of the house: and they went up by winding stairs into the middle [story], and out of the middle into the third. NIV 8 The entrance to the lowest floor was on the south side of the temple; a stairway led up to the middle level and from there to the third. ASV 9 So he built the house, and finished it; and he covered the house with beams and planks of cedar. NIV 9 So he built the temple and completed it, roofing it with beams and cedar planks. ASV 10 And he built the stories against all the house, each five cubits high: and they rested on the house with timber of cedar. NIV 10 And he built the side rooms all along the temple. The height of each was five cubits, and they were attached to the temple by beams of cedar. ASV 11 And the word of Jehovah came to Solomon, saying, NIV 11 The word of the LORD came to Solomon: ASV 12 Concerning this house which thou art building, if thou wilt walk in my statutes, and execute mine ordinances, and keep all my commandments to walk in them; then will I establish my word with thee, which I spake unto David thy father. NIV 12 "As for this temple you are building, if you follow my decrees, carry out my regulations and keep all my commands and obey them, I will fulfill through you the promise I gave to David your father. ASV 13 And I will dwell among the children of Israel, and will not forsake my people Israel. NIV 13 And I will live among the Israelites and will not abandon my people Israel." ASV 14 So Solomon built the house, and finished it. NIV 14 So Solomon built the temple and completed it. ASV 15 And he built the walls of the house within with boards of cedar: from the floor of the house unto the walls of the ceiling, he covered them on the inside with wood; and he covered the floor of the house with boards of fir. NIV 15 He lined its interior walls with cedar boards, paneling them from the floor of the temple to the ceiling, and covered the floor of the temple with planks of pine. ASV 16 And he built twenty cubits on the hinder part of the house with boards of cedar from the floor unto the walls [of the ceiling]: he built [them] for it within, for an oracle, even for the most holy place. NIV 16 He partitioned off twenty cubits at the rear of the temple with cedar boards from floor to ceiling to form within the temple an inner sanctuary, the Most Holy Place. ASV 17 And the house, that is, the temple before [the oracle], was forty cubits [long]. NIV 17 The main hall in front of this room was forty cubits long. ASV 18 And there was cedar on the house within, carved with knops and open flowers: all was cedar; there was no stone seen. NIV 18 The inside of the temple was cedar, carved with gourds and open flowers. Everything was cedar; no stone was to be seen. ASV 19 And he prepared an oracle in the midst of the house within, to set there the ark of the covenant of Jehovah. NIV 19 He prepared the inner sanctuary within the temple to set the ark of the covenant of the LORD there. ASV 20 And within the oracle was [a space of] twenty cubits in length, and twenty cubits in breadth, and twenty cubits in the height thereof; and he overlaid it with pure gold: and he covered the altar with cedar. NIV 20 The inner sanctuary was twenty cubits long, twenty wide and twenty high. He overlaid the inside with pure gold, and he also overlaid the altar of cedar. ASV 21 So Solomon overlaid the house within with pure gold: and he drew chains of gold across before the oracle; and he overlaid it with gold. NIV 21 Solomon covered the inside of the temple with pure gold, and he extended gold chains across the front of the inner sanctuary, which was overlaid with gold. ASV 22 And the whole house he overlaid with gold, until all the house was finished: also the whole altar that belonged to the oracle he overlaid with gold. NIV 22 So he overlaid the whole interior with gold. He also overlaid with gold the altar that belonged to the inner sanctuary. ASV 23 And in the oracle he made two cherubim of olive-wood, each ten cubits high. NIV 23 In the inner sanctuary he made a pair of cherubim of olive wood, each ten cubits high. ASV 24 And five cubits was the one wing of the cherub, and five cubits the other wing of the cherub: from the uttermost part of the one wing unto the uttermost part of the other were ten cubits. NIV 24 One wing of the first cherub was five cubits long, and the other wing five cubits--ten cubits from wing tip to wing tip. ASV 25 And the other cherub was ten cubits: both the cherubim were of one measure and one form. NIV 25 The second cherub also measured ten cubits, for the two cherubim were identical in size and shape. ASV 26 The height of the one cherub was ten cubits, and so was it of the other cherub. NIV 26 The height of each cherub was ten cubits. ASV 27 And he set the cherubim within the inner house; and the wings of the cherubim were stretched forth, so that the wing of the one touched the one wall, and the wing of the other cherub touched the other wall; and their wings touched one another in the midst of the house. NIV 27 He placed the cherubim inside the innermost room of the temple, with their wings spread out. The wing of one cherub touched one wall, while the wing of the other touched the other wall, and their wings touched each other in the middle of the room. ASV 28 And he overlaid the cherubim with gold. NIV 28 He overlaid the cherubim with gold. ASV 29 And he carved all the walls of the house round about with carved figures of cherubim and palm-trees and open flowers, within and without. NIV 29 On the walls all around the temple, in both the inner and outer rooms, he carved cherubim, palm trees and open flowers. ASV 30 And the floor of the house he overlaid with gold, within and without. NIV 30 He also covered the floors of both the inner and outer rooms of the temple with gold. ASV 31 And for the entrance of the oracle he made doors of olive-wood: the lintel [and] door-posts were a fifth part [of the wall]. NIV 31 For the entrance of the inner sanctuary he made doors of olive wood with five-sided jambs. ASV 32 So [he made] two doors of olive-wood; and he carved upon them carvings of cherubim and palm-trees and open flowers, and overlaid them with gold; and he spread the gold upon the cherubim, and upon the palm-trees. NIV 32 And on the two olive wood doors he carved cherubim, palm trees and open flowers, and overlaid the cherubim and palm trees with beaten gold. ASV 33 So also made he for the entrance of the temple door-posts of olive-wood, out of a fourth part [of the wall]; NIV 33 In the same way he made four-sided jambs of olive wood for the entrance to the main hall. ASV 34 and two doors of fir-wood: the two leaves of the one door were folding, and the two leaves of the other door were folding. NIV 34 He also made two pine doors, each having two leaves that turned in sockets. ASV 35 And he carved [thereon] cherubim and palm-trees and open flowers; and he overlaid them with gold fitted upon the graven work. NIV 35 He carved cherubim, palm trees and open flowers on them and overlaid them with gold hammered evenly over the carvings. ASV 36 And he built the inner court with three courses of hewn stone, and a course of cedar beams. NIV 36 And he built the inner courtyard of three courses of dressed stone and one course of trimmed cedar beams. ASV 37 In the fourth year was the foundation of the house of Jehovah laid, in the month Ziv. NIV 37 The foundation of the temple of the LORD was laid in the fourth year, in the month of Ziv. ASV 38 And in the eleventh year, in the month Bul, which is the eighth month, was the house finished throughout all the parts thereof, and according to all the fashion of it. So was he seven years in building it. NIV 38 In the eleventh year in the month of Bul, the eighth month, the temple was finished in all its details according to its specifications. He had spent seven years building it.
