1 Y dijo David en su corazón: Al fin seré muerto algún día por la mano de Saúl; nada, por tanto, me será mejor que fugarme a la tierra de los filisteos, para que Saúl se deje de mí, y no me ande buscando más por todos los términos de Israel, y <I>así</I> me escaparé de sus manos.

But David thought to himself, “One of these days I will be destroyed by the hand of Saul. The best thing I can do is to escape to the land of the Philistines. Then Saul will give up searching for me anywhere in Israel, and I will slip out of his hand.”
2 Se levantó, pues, David, y con los seiscientos hombres que <I>estaban</I> con él se pasó a Aquis hijo de Maoc, rey de Gat.

So David and the six hundred men with him left and went over to Achish son of Maok king of Gath.
3 Y moró David con Aquis en Gat, él y los suyos, cada uno con su familia; David con sus dos mujeres, Ahinoam jezreelita, y Abigail, la <I>que fue</I> mujer de Nabal el del Carmelo.

David and his men settled in Gath with Achish. Each man had his family with him, and David had his two wives: Ahinoam of Jezreel and Abigail of Carmel, the widow of Nabal.
4 Y vino la nueva a Saúl que David había huido a Gat, y no lo buscó más.

When Saul was told that David had fled to Gath, he no longer searched for him.
5 Y David dijo a Aquis: Si he hallado ahora gracia en tus ojos, séame dado lugar en algunas de las ciudades de la tierra, donde habite; porque ¿ha de morar tu siervo contigo en la ciudad real?

Then David said to Achish, “If I have found favor in your eyes, let a place be assigned to me in one of the country towns, that I may live there. Why should your servant live in the royal city with you?”
6 Y Aquis le dio aquel día a Siclag. De aquí fue Siclag de los reyes de Judá hasta hoy.

So on that day Achish gave him Ziklag, and it has belonged to the kings of Judah ever since.
7 Y fue el número de los días que David habitó en la tierra de los filisteos, cuatro meses y algunos días.

David lived in Philistine territory a year and four months.
8 Y subía David con los suyos, y hacían entradas en los gesureos, y en los gerzeos, y en los amalecitas; porque estos habitaban de largo tiempo la tierra, desde como se va a Shur hasta la tierra de Egipto.

Now David and his men went up and raided the Geshurites, the Girzites and the Amalekites. (From ancient times these peoples had lived in the land extending to Shur and Egypt.)
9 Y hería David la tierra, y no dejaba a vida hombre ni mujer; y se llevaba las ovejas y las vacas y los asnos y los camellos y las ropas; y volvía, y se venía a Aquis.

Whenever David attacked an area, he did not leave a man or woman alive, but took sheep and cattle, donkeys and camels, and clothes. Then he returned to Achish.
10 Y decía Aquis: ¿Dónde habéis corrido hoy? Y David decía: Al mediodía de Judá, y al mediodía de Jerameel, o contra el mediodía de Ceni.

When Achish asked, “Where did you go raiding today?” David would say, “Against the Negev of Judah” or “Against the Negev of Jerahmeel” or “Against the Negev of the Kenites.”
11 Ni hombre ni mujer dejaba a vida David, que viniese a Gat; diciendo: Por ventura darían aviso de nosotros, diciendo: Esto hizo David. Y ésta era su costumbre todo el tiempo que moró en tierra de los filisteos.

He did not leave a man or woman alive to be brought to Gath, for he thought, “They might inform on us and say, ‘This is what David did.’ ” And such was his practice as long as he lived in Philistine territory.
12 Y Aquis creía a David, diciendo <I>en sí</I> : El se hace abominable en su pueblo de Israel, y <I>así</I> será siempre mi siervo.

Achish trusted David and said to himself, “He has become so obnoxious to his people, the Israelites, that he will be my servant for life.”
