1 Thessalonians 5

CSB 1 About the times and the seasons: brothers, you do not need anything to be written to you. NIV 1 Now, brothers, about times and dates we do not need to write to you, CSB 2 For you yourselves know very well that the Day of the Lord will come just like a thief in the night. NIV 2 for you know very well that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night. CSB 3 When they say, "Peace and security," then sudden destruction comes on them, like labor pains on a pregnant woman, and they will not escape. NIV 3 While people are saying, "Peace and safety," destruction will come on them suddenly, as labor pains on a pregnant woman, and they will not escape. CSB 4 But you, brothers, are not in the dark, so that this day would overtake you like a thief. NIV 4 But you, brothers, are not in darkness so that this day should surprise you like a thief. CSB 5 For you are all sons of light and sons of the day. We're not of the night or of darkness. NIV 5 You are all sons of the light and sons of the day. We do not belong to the night or to the darkness. CSB 6 So then, we must not sleep, like the rest, but we must stay awake and be sober. NIV 6 So then, let us not be like others, who are asleep, but let us be alert and self-controlled. CSB 7 For those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get drunk are drunk at night. NIV 7 For those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get drunk, get drunk at night. CSB 8 But since we are of the day, we must be sober and put the armor of faith and love on our chests, and put on a helmet of the hope of salvation. NIV 8 But since we belong to the day, let us be self-controlled, putting on faith and love as a breastplate, and the hope of salvation as a helmet. CSB 9 For God did not appoint us to wrath, but to obtain salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, NIV 9 For God did not appoint us to suffer wrath but to receive salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ. CSB 10 who died for us, so that whether we are awake or asleep, we will live together with Him. NIV 10 He died for us so that, whether we are awake or asleep, we may live together with him. CSB 11 Therefore encourage one another and build each other up as you are already doing. NIV 11 Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing. CSB 12 Now we ask you, brothers, to give recognition to those who labor among you and lead you in the Lord and admonish you, NIV 12 Now we ask you, brothers, to respect those who work hard among you, who are over you in the Lord and who admonish you. CSB 13 and to esteem them very highly in love because of their work. Be at peace among yourselves. NIV 13 Hold them in the highest regard in love because of their work. Live in peace with each other. CSB 14 And we exhort you, brothers: warn those who are lazy, comfort the discouraged, help the weak, be patient with everyone. NIV 14 And we urge you, brothers, warn those who are idle, encourage the timid, help the weak, be patient with everyone. CSB 15 See to it that no one repays evil for evil to anyone, but always pursue what is good for one another and for all. NIV 15 Make sure that nobody pays back wrong for wrong, but always try to be kind to each other and to everyone else. CSB 16 Rejoice always! NIV 16 Be joyful always; CSB 17 Pray constantly. NIV 17 pray continually; CSB 18 Give thanks in everything, for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus. NIV 18 give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus. CSB 19 Don't stifle the Spirit. NIV 19 Do not put out the Spirit's fire; CSB 20 Don't despise prophecies, NIV 20 do not treat prophecies with contempt. CSB 21 but test all things. Hold on to what is good. NIV 21 Test everything. Hold on to the good. CSB 22 Stay away from every form of evil. NIV 22 Avoid every kind of evil.
