1 Thessalonians 5

WYC 1 But, brethren, of times and moments ye need not that I write to you. NIV 1 Now, brothers, about times and dates we do not need to write to you, WYC 2 For ye yourselves know diligently, that the day of the Lord shall come, as a thief in the night. NIV 2 for you know very well that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night. WYC 3 For when they shall say peace is, and secureness, then sudden death shall come on them [+Soothly when they shall say peace and secureness, then suddenly perishing, or death, shall come to them], as sorrow to a woman that is with child, and they shall not escape. NIV 3 While people are saying, "Peace and safety," destruction will come on them suddenly, as labor pains on a pregnant woman, and they will not escape. WYC 4 But, brethren, ye be not in darknesses, that that day as a thief catch you. NIV 4 But you, brothers, are not in darkness so that this day should surprise you like a thief. WYC 5 For all ye be the sons of light, and sons of [the] day; we be not of night, neither of darknesses. NIV 5 You are all sons of the light and sons of the day. We do not belong to the night or to the darkness. WYC 6 Therefore sleep we not as others; but wake we, and be we sober. NIV 6 So then, let us not be like others, who are asleep, but let us be alert and self-controlled. WYC 7 For they that sleep, sleep in the night, and they that be drunken, be drunken in the night. NIV 7 For those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get drunk, get drunk at night. WYC 8 But we that be of the day, be sober, clothed in the habergeon of faith and of charity, and in the helmet of hope of health [clothed in the habergeon of faith and charity, and in the helmet, hope of health]. NIV 8 But since we belong to the day, let us be self-controlled, putting on faith and love as a breastplate, and the hope of salvation as a helmet. WYC 9 For God putted not us into wrath, but into the purchasing of health by our Lord Jesus Christ, NIV 9 For God did not appoint us to suffer wrath but to receive salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ. WYC 10 that was dead for us; that whether we wake, whether we sleep, we live together with him. NIV 10 He died for us so that, whether we are awake or asleep, we may live together with him. WYC 11 For which thing comfort ye together, and edify ye each other, as ye do. NIV 11 Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing. WYC 12 And, brethren, we pray you, that ye know them that travail among you, and be sovereigns to you, (or be before to you,) in the Lord, and teach, (or admonish,) you, NIV 12 Now we ask you, brothers, to respect those who work hard among you, who are over you in the Lord and who admonish you. WYC 13 that ye have them more abundantly in charity; and for the work of them, have ye peace with them. NIV 13 Hold them in the highest regard in love because of their work. Live in peace with each other. WYC 14 And, brethren, we pray you, reprove unpeaceable men [reprove ye, or chastise, unquiet men]. Comfort ye men of little heart, receive ye frail men, be ye patient to all men. NIV 14 And we urge you, brothers, warn those who are idle, encourage the timid, help the weak, be patient with everyone. WYC 15 See ye, that no man yield evil for evil to any man; but evermore follow ye that that is good, each to other, (or together,) and to all men. NIV 15 Make sure that nobody pays back wrong for wrong, but always try to be kind to each other and to everyone else. WYC 16 Evermore joy ye; NIV 16 Be joyful always; WYC 17 without ceasing pray ye; NIV 17 pray continually; WYC 18 in all things do ye thankings. For this is the will of God in Christ Jesus, in all you. NIV 18 give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus. WYC 19 Do not ye quench the Spirit, NIV 19 Do not put out the Spirit's fire; WYC 20 do not ye despise prophecies. NIV 20 do not treat prophecies with contempt. WYC 21 But prove ye all things, and hold ye that thing that is good. NIV 21 Test everything. Hold on to the good. WYC 22 Abstain [ye] you from all evil species, (or likeness). NIV 22 Avoid every kind of evil. WYC 23 And God himself of peace make you holy by all things, that your spirit be kept whole, and soul, and body, without plaint, in the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. NIV 23 May God himself, the God of peace, sanctify you through and through. May your whole spirit, soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. WYC 24 God is true, that called you, which also shall do [work of grace in you]. NIV 24 The one who calls you is faithful and he will do it. WYC 25 Brethren, pray ye for us. NIV 25 Brothers, pray for us. WYC 26 Greet ye well all brethren in holy kiss. NIV 26 Greet all the brothers with a holy kiss. WYC 27 I charge you by the Lord, that this epistle be read to all holy brethren. NIV 27 I charge you before the Lord to have this letter read to all the brothers. WYC 28 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. Amen. NIV 28 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you.
