1 Timothy 1

NCV 1 From Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus, by the command of God our Savior and Christ Jesus our hope. NIV 1 Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the command of God our Savior and of Christ Jesus our hope, NCV 2 To Timothy, a true child to me because you believe: Grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord. NIV 2 To Timothy my true son in the faith: Grace, mercy and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord. NCV 3 I asked you to stay longer in Ephesus when I went into Macedonia so you could command some people there to stop teaching false things. NIV 3 As I urged you when I went into Macedonia, stay there in Ephesus so that you may command certain men not to teach false doctrines any longer NCV 4 Tell them not to spend their time on stories that are not true and on long lists of names in family histories. These things only bring arguments; they do not help God's work, which is done in faith. NIV 4 nor to devote themselves to myths and endless genealogies. These promote controversies rather than God's work--which is by faith. NCV 5 The purpose of this command is for people to have love, a love that comes from a pure heart and a good conscience and a true faith. NIV 5 The goal of this command is love, which comes from a pure heart and a good conscience and a sincere faith. NCV 6 Some people have missed these things and turned to useless talk. NIV 6 Some have wandered away from these and turned to meaningless talk. NCV 7 They want to be teachers of the law, but they do not understand either what they are talking about or what they are sure about. NIV 7 They want to be teachers of the law, but they do not know what they are talking about or what they so confidently affirm. NCV 8 But we know that the law is good if someone uses it lawfully. NIV 8 We know that the law is good if one uses it properly. NCV 9 We also know that the law is not made for good people but for those who are against the law and for those who refuse to follow it. It is for people who are against God and are sinful, who are not holy and have no religion, who kill their fathers and mothers, who murder, NIV 9 We also know that law is made not for the righteous but for lawbreakers and rebels, the ungodly and sinful, the unholy and irreligious; for those who kill their fathers or mothers, for murderers, NCV 10 who take part in sexual sins, who have sexual relations with people of the same sex, who sell slaves, who tell lies, who speak falsely, and who do anything against the true teaching of God. NIV 10 for adulterers and perverts, for slave traders and liars and perjurers--and for whatever else is contrary to the sound doctrine NCV 11 That teaching is part of the Good News of the blessed God that he gave me to tell. NIV 11 that conforms to the glorious gospel of the blessed God, which he entrusted to me. NCV 12 I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who gave me strength, because he trusted me and gave me this work of serving him. NIV 12 I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who has given me strength, that he considered me faithful, appointing me to his service. NCV 13 In the past I spoke against Christ and persecuted him and did all kinds of things to hurt him. But God showed me mercy, because I did not know what I was doing. I did not believe. NIV 13 Even though I was once a blasphemer and a persecutor and a violent man, I was shown mercy because I acted in ignorance and unbelief. NCV 14 But the grace of our Lord was fully given to me, and with that grace came the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus. NIV 14 The grace of our Lord was poured out on me abundantly, along with the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus. NCV 15 What I say is true, and you should fully accept it: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am the worst. NIV 15 Here is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners--of whom I am the worst. NCV 16 But I was given mercy so that in me, the worst of all sinners, Christ Jesus could show that he has patience without limit. His patience with me made me an example for those who would believe in him and have life forever. NIV 16 But for that very reason I was shown mercy so that in me, the worst of sinners, Christ Jesus might display his unlimited patience as an example for those who would believe on him and receive eternal life. NCV 17 To the King that rules forever, who will never die, who cannot be seen, the only God, be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen. NIV 17 Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory for ever and ever. Amen. NCV 18 Timothy, my child, I am giving you a command that agrees with the prophecies that were given about you in the past. I tell you this so you can follow them and fight the good fight. NIV 18 Timothy, my son, I give you this instruction in keeping with the prophecies once made about you, so that by following them you may fight the good fight, NCV 19 Continue to have faith and do what you know is right. Some people have rejected this, and their faith has been shipwrecked. NIV 19 holding on to faith and a good conscience. Some have rejected these and so have shipwrecked their faith. NCV 20 Hymenaeus and Alexander have done that, and I have given them to Satan so they will learn not to speak against God. NIV 20 Among them are Hymenaeus and Alexander, whom I have handed over to Satan to be taught not to blaspheme.
