MSG 1 Next David and the worship leaders selected some from the family of Asaph, Heman, and Jeduthun for special service in preaching and music. Here is the roster of names and assignments: NIV 1 David, together with the commanders of the army, set apart some of the sons of Asaph, Heman and Jeduthun for the ministry of prophesying, accompanied by harps, lyres and cymbals. Here is the list of the men who performed this service: MSG 2 From the family of Asaph: Zaccur, Joseph, Nethaniah, and Asarelah; they were supervised by Asaph, who spoke for God backed up by the king's authority. NIV 2 From the sons of Asaph: Zaccur, Joseph, Nethaniah and Asarelah. The sons of Asaph were under the supervision of Asaph, who prophesied under the king's supervision. MSG 3 From the family of Jeduthun there were six sons: Gedaliah, Zeri, Jeshaiah, Shimei, Hashabiah, and Mattithiah; they were supervised by their father Jeduthun, who preached and accompanied himself with the zither - he was responsible for leading the thanks and praise to God. NIV 3 As for Jeduthun, from his sons: Gedaliah, Zeri, Jeshaiah, Shimei, Hashabiah and Mattithiah, six in all, under the supervision of their father Jeduthun, who prophesied, using the harp in thanking and praising the LORD. MSG 4 From the family of Heman: Bukkiah, Mattaniah, Uzziel, Shubael, Jerimoth, Hananiah, Hanani, Eliathah, Giddalti, Romamti-Ezer, Joshbekashah, Mallothi, Hothir, and Mahazioth. NIV 4 As for Heman, from his sons: Bukkiah, Mattaniah, Uzziel, Shubael and Jerimoth; Hananiah, Hanani, Eliathah, Giddalti and Romamti-Ezer; Joshbekashah, Mallothi, Hothir and Mahazioth. MSG 5 These were the sons of Heman the king's seer; they supported and assisted him in his divinely appointed work. God gave Heman fourteen sons and three daughters. NIV 5 All these were sons of Heman the king's seer. They were given him through the promises of God to exalt him. God gave Heman fourteen sons and three daughters. MSG 6 Under their father's supervision they were in charge of leading the singing and providing musical accompaniment in the work of worship in the sanctuary of God (Asaph, Jeduthun, and Heman took their orders directly from the king). NIV 6 All these men were under the supervision of their fathers for the music of the temple of the LORD, with cymbals, lyres and harps, for the ministry at the house of God. Asaph, Jeduthun and Heman were under the supervision of the king. MSG 7 They were well-trained in the sacred music, all of them masters. There were 288 of them. NIV 7 Along with their relatives--all of them trained and skilled in music for the LORD--they numbered 288. MSG 8 They drew names at random to see who would do what. Nobody, whether young or old, teacher or student, was given preference or advantage over another. NIV 8 Young and old alike, teacher as well as student, cast lots for their duties. MSG 9 The first name from Asaph's family was Joseph and his twelve sons and brothers; second, Gedaliah and his twelve sons and brothers; NIV 9 The first lot, which was for Asaph, fell to Joseph, his sons and relatives, 12 the second to Gedaliah, he and his relatives and sons, 12 MSG 10 third, Zaccur and his twelve sons and brothers; NIV 10 the third to Zaccur, his sons and relatives, 12 MSG 11 fourth, Izri and his twelve sons and brothers; NIV 11 the fourth to Izri, his sons and relatives, 12 MSG 12 fifth, Nethaniah and his twelve sons and brothers; NIV 12 the fifth to Nethaniah, his sons and relatives, 12 MSG 13 sixth, Bukkiah and his twelve sons and brothers; NIV 13 the sixth to Bukkiah, his sons and relatives, 12 MSG 14 seventh, Jesarelah and his twelve sons and brothers; NIV 14 the seventh to Jesarelah, his sons and relatives, 12 MSG 15 eighth, Jeshaiah and his twelve sons and brothers; NIV 15 the eighth to Jeshaiah, his sons and relatives, 12 MSG 16 ninth, Mattaniah and his twelve sons and brothers; NIV 16 the ninth to Mattaniah, his sons and relatives, 12 MSG 17 tenth, Shimei and his twelve sons and brothers; NIV 17 the tenth to Shimei, his sons and relatives, 12 MSG 18 eleventh, Azarel and his twelve sons and brothers; NIV 18 the eleventh to Azarel, his sons and relatives, 12 MSG 19 twelfth, Hashabiah and his twelve sons and brothers; NIV 19 the twelfth to Hashabiah, his sons and relatives, 12 MSG 20 thirteenth, Shubael and his twelve sons and brothers; NIV 20 the thirteenth to Shubael, his sons and relatives, 12 MSG 21 fourteenth, Mattithiah and his twelve sons and brothers; NIV 21 the fourteenth to Mattithiah his sons and relatives, 12 MSG 22 fifteenth, Jerimoth and his twelve sons and brothers; NIV 22 the fifteenth to Jerimoth, his sons and relatives, 12 MSG 23 sixteenth, Hananiah and his twelve sons and brothers; NIV 23 the sixteenth to Hananiah, his sons and relatives, 12 MSG 24 seventeenth, Joshbekashah and his twelve sons and brothers; NIV 24 the seventeenth to Joshbekashah, his sons and relatives, 12 MSG 25 eighteenth, Hanani and his twelve sons and brothers; NIV 25 the eighteenth to Hanani, his sons and relatives, 12 MSG 26 nineteenth, Mallothi and his twelve sons and brothers; NIV 26 the nineteenth to Mallothi, his sons and relatives, 12 MSG 27 twentieth, Eliathah and his twelve sons and brothers; NIV 27 the twentieth to Eliathah, his sons and relatives, 12 MSG 28 twenty-first, Hothir and his twelve sons and brothers; NIV 28 the twenty-first to Hothir, his sons and relatives, 12 MSG 29 twenty-second, Giddalti and his twelve sons and brothers; NIV 29 the twenty-second to Giddalti, his sons and relatives, 12 MSG 30 twenty-third, Mahazioth and his twelve sons and brothers; NIV 30 the twenty-third to Mahazioth, his sons and relatives, 12 MSG 31 twenty-fourth, Romamti-Ezer and his twelve sons and brothers.
