1 Corinthians 1

RSV 1 Paul, called by the will of God to be an apostle of Christ Jesus, and our brother Sos'thenes, NIV 1 Paul, called to be an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, and our brother Sosthenes, RSV 2 To the church of God which is at Corinth, to those sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints together with all those who in every place call on the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, both their Lord and ours: NIV 2 To the church of God in Corinth, to those sanctified in Christ Jesus and called to be holy, together with all those everywhere who call on the name of our Lord Jesus Christ--their Lord and ours: RSV 3 Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. NIV 3 Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. RSV 4 I give thanks to God always for you because of the grace of God which was given you in Christ Jesus, NIV 4 I always thank God for you because of his grace given you in Christ Jesus. RSV 5 that in every way you were enriched in him with all speech and all knowledge-- NIV 5 For in him you have been enriched in every way--in all your speaking and in all your knowledge-- RSV 6 even as the testimony to Christ was confirmed among you-- NIV 6 because our testimony about Christ was confirmed in you. RSV 7 so that you are not lacking in any spiritual gift, as you wait for the revealing of our Lord Jesus Christ; NIV 7 Therefore you do not lack any spiritual gift as you eagerly wait for our Lord Jesus Christ to be revealed. RSV 8 who will sustain you to the end, guiltless in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. NIV 8 He will keep you strong to the end, so that you will be blameless on the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. RSV 9 God is faithful, by whom you were called into the fellowship of his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. NIV 9 God, who has called you into fellowship with his Son Jesus Christ our Lord, is faithful. RSV 10 I appeal to you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree and that there be no dissensions among you, but that you be united in the same mind and the same judgment. NIV 10 I appeal to you, brothers, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree with one another so that there may be no divisions among you and that you may be perfectly united in mind and thought. RSV 11 For it has been reported to me by Chlo'e's people that there is quarreling among you, my brethren. NIV 11 My brothers, some from Chloe's household have informed me that there are quarrels among you. RSV 12 What I mean is that each one of you says, "I belong to Paul," or "I belong to Apol'los," or "I belong to Cephas," or "I belong to Christ." NIV 12 What I mean is this: One of you says, "I follow Paul"; another, "I follow Apollos"; another, "I follow Cephas "; still another, "I follow Christ." RSV 13 Is Christ divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Or were you baptized in the name of Paul? NIV 13 Is Christ divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Were you baptized into the name of Paul? RSV 14 I am thankful that I baptized none of you except Crispus and Ga'ius; NIV 14 I am thankful that I did not baptize any of you except Crispus and Gaius, RSV 15 lest any one should say that you were baptized in my name. NIV 15 so no one can say that you were baptized into my name. RSV 16 (I did baptize also the household of Steph'anas. Beyond that, I do not know whether I baptized any one else.) NIV 16 (Yes, I also baptized the household of Stephanas; beyond that, I don't remember if I baptized anyone else.) RSV 17 For Christ did not send me to baptize but to preach the gospel, and not with eloquent wisdom, lest the cross of Christ be emptied of its power. NIV 17 For Christ did not send me to baptize, but to preach the gospel--not with words of human wisdom, lest the cross of Christ be emptied of its power. RSV 18 For the word of the cross is folly to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. NIV 18 For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. RSV 19 For it is written, "I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and the cleverness of the clever I will thwart." NIV 19 For it is written: "I will destroy the wisdom of the wise; the intelligence of the intelligent I will frustrate." RSV 20 Where is the wise man? Where is the scribe? Where is the debater of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world? NIV 20 Where is the wise man? Where is the scholar? Where is the philosopher of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world? RSV 21 For since, in the wisdom of God, the world did not know God through wisdom, it pleased God through the folly of what we preach to save those who believe. NIV 21 For since in the wisdom of God the world through its wisdom did not know him, God was pleased through the foolishness of what was preached to save those who believe. RSV 22 For Jews demand signs and Greeks seek wisdom, NIV 22 Jews demand miraculous signs and Greeks look for wisdom, RSV 23 but we preach Christ crucified, a stumbling block to Jews and folly to Gentiles, NIV 23 but we preach Christ crucified: a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles, RSV 24 but to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. NIV 24 but to those whom God has called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. RSV 25 For the foolishness of God is wiser than men, and the weakness of God is stronger than men. NIV 25 For the foolishness of God is wiser than man's wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than man's strength. RSV 26 For consider your call, brethren; not many of you were wise according to worldly standards, not many were powerful, not many were of noble birth; NIV 26 Brothers, think of what you were when you were called. Not many of you were wise by human standards; not many were influential; not many were of noble birth. RSV 27 but God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise, God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong, NIV 27 But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong. RSV 28 God chose what is low and despised in the world, even things that are not, to bring to nothing things that are, NIV 28 He chose the lowly things of this world and the despised things--and the things that are not--to nullify the things that are, RSV 29 so that no human being might boast in the presence of God. NIV 29 so that no one may boast before him. RSV 30 He is the source of your life in Christ Jesus, whom God made our wisdom, our righteousness and sanctification and redemption; NIV 30 It is because of him that you are in Christ Jesus, who has become for us wisdom from God--that is, our righteousness, holiness and redemption. RSV 31 therefore, as it is written, "Let him who boasts, boast of the Lord." NIV 31 Therefore, as it is written: "Let him who boasts boast in the Lord."
