1 Corinthians 4:12-21

NRS 12 and we grow weary from the work of our own hands. When reviled, we bless; when persecuted, we endure; NIV 12 We work hard with our own hands. When we are cursed, we bless; when we are persecuted, we endure it; NRS 13 when slandered, we speak kindly. We have become like the rubbish of the world, the dregs of all things, to this very day. NIV 13 when we are slandered, we answer kindly. Up to this moment we have become the scum of the earth, the refuse of the world. NRS 14 I am not writing this to make you ashamed, but to admonish you as my beloved children. NIV 14 I am not writing this to shame you, but to warn you, as my dear children. NRS 15 For though you might have ten thousand guardians in Christ, you do not have many fathers. Indeed, in Christ Jesus I became your father through the gospel. NIV 15 Even though you have ten thousand guardians in Christ, you do not have many fathers, for in Christ Jesus I became your father through the gospel. NRS 16 I appeal to you, then, be imitators of me. NIV 16 Therefore I urge you to imitate me. NRS 17 For this reason I sent you Timothy, who is my beloved and faithful child in the Lord, to remind you of my ways in Christ Jesus, as I teach them everywhere in every church. NIV 17 For this reason I am sending to you Timothy, my son whom I love, who is faithful in the Lord. He will remind you of my way of life in Christ Jesus, which agrees with what I teach everywhere in every church. NRS 18 But some of you, thinking that I am not coming to you, have become arrogant. NIV 18 Some of you have become arrogant, as if I were not coming to you. NRS 19 But I will come to you soon, if the Lord wills, and I will find out not the talk of these arrogant people but their power. NIV 19 But I will come to you very soon, if the Lord is willing, and then I will find out not only how these arrogant people are talking, but what power they have. NRS 20 For the kingdom of God depends not on talk but on power. NIV 20 For the kingdom of God is not a matter of talk but of power. NRS 21 What would you prefer? Am I to come to you with a stick, or with love in a spirit of gentleness? NIV 21 What do you prefer? Shall I come to you with a whip, or in love and with a gentle spirit?
