1 John 3:11-24

ESV 11 For this is the message that you have heard from the beginning, that we should love one another. NIV 11 This is the message you heard from the beginning: We should love one another. ESV 12 We should not be like Cain, who was of the evil one and murdered his brother. And why did he murder him? Because his own deeds were evil and his brother's righteous. NIV 12 Do not be like Cain, who belonged to the evil one and murdered his brother. And why did he murder him? Because his own actions were evil and his brother's were righteous. ESV 13 Do not be surprised, brothers, that the world hates you. NIV 13 Do not be surprised, my brothers, if the world hates you. ESV 14 We know that we have passed out of death into life, because we love the brothers. Whoever does not love abides in death. NIV 14 We know that we have passed from death to life, because we love our brothers. Anyone who does not love remains in death. ESV 15 Everyone who hates his brother is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life abiding in him. NIV 15 Anyone who hates his brother is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life in him. ESV 16 By this we know love, that he laid down his life for us, and we ought to lay down our lives for the brothers. NIV 16 This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers. ESV 17 But if anyone has the world's goods and sees his brother in need, yet closes his heart against him, how does God's love abide in him? NIV 17 If anyone has material possessions and sees his brother in need but has no pity on him, how can the love of God be in him? ESV 18 Little children, let us not love in word or talk but in deed and in truth. NIV 18 Dear children, let us not love with words or tongue but with actions and in truth. ESV 19 By this we shall know that we are of the truth and reassure our heart before him; NIV 19 This then is how we know that we belong to the truth, and how we set our hearts at rest in his presence ESV 20 for whenever our heart condemns us, God is greater than our heart, and he knows everything. NIV 20 whenever our hearts condemn us. For God is greater than our hearts, and he knows everything. ESV 21 Beloved, if our heart does not condemn us, we have confidence before God; NIV 21 Dear friends, if our hearts do not condemn us, we have confidence before God ESV 22 and whatever we ask we receive from him, because we keep his commandments and do what pleases him. NIV 22 and receive from him anything we ask, because we obey his commands and do what pleases him. ESV 23 And this is his commandment, that we believe in the name of his Son Jesus Christ and love one another, just as he has commanded us. NIV 23 And this is his command: to believe in the name of his Son, Jesus Christ, and to love one another as he commanded us. ESV 24 Whoever keeps his commandments abides in God, and God in him. And by this we know that he abides in us, by the Spirit whom he has given us. NIV 24 Those who obey his commands live in him, and he in them. And this is how we know that he lives in us: We know it by the Spirit he gave us.
