1 John 4

CJB 1 Dear friends, don't trust every spirit. On the contrary, test the spirits to see whether they are from God; because many false prophets have gone out into the world. NIV 1 Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world. CJB 2 Here is how you recognize the Spirit of God: every spirit which acknowledges that Yeshua the Messiah came as a human being is from God, NIV 2 This is how you can recognize the Spirit of God: Every spirit that acknowledges that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God, CJB 3 and every spirit which does not acknowledge Yeshua is not from God - in fact, this is the spirit of the Anti-Messiah. You have heard that he is coming. Well, he's here now, in the world already! NIV 3 but every spirit that does not acknowledge Jesus is not from God. This is the spirit of the antichrist, which you have heard is coming and even now is already in the world. CJB 4 You, children, are from God and have overcome the false prophets, because he who is in you is greater than he who is in the world. NIV 4 You, dear children, are from God and have overcome them, because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world. CJB 5 They are from the world; therefore, they speak from the world's viewpoint; and the world listens to them. NIV 5 They are from the world and therefore speak from the viewpoint of the world, and the world listens to them. CJB 6 We are from God. Whoever knows God listens to us; whoever is not from God doesn't listen to us. This is how we distinguish the Spirit of truth from the spirit of error. NIV 6 We are from God, and whoever knows God listens to us; but whoever is not from God does not listen to us. This is how we recognize the Spirit of truth and the spirit of falsehood. CJB 7 Beloved friends, let us love one another; because love is from God; and everyone who loves has God as his Father and knows God. NIV 7 Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. CJB 8 Those who do not love, do not know God; because God is love. NIV 8 Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love. CJB 9 Here is how God showed his love among us: God sent his only Son into the world, so that through him we might have life. NIV 9 This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. CJB 10 Here is what love is: not that we have loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the kapparah for our sins. NIV 10 This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. CJB 11 Beloved friends, if this is how God loved us, we likewise ought to love one another. NIV 11 Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. CJB 12 No one has ever seen God; if we love one another, God remains united with us, and our love for him has been brought to its goal in us. NIV 12 No one has ever seen God; but if we love one another, God lives in us and his love is made complete in us. CJB 13 Here is how we know that we remain united with him and he with us: he has given to us from his own Spirit. NIV 13 We know that we live in him and he in us, because he has given us of his Spirit. CJB 14 Moreover, we have seen and we testify that the Father has sent his Son as Deliverer of the world. NIV 14 And we have seen and testify that the Father has sent his Son to be the Savior of the world. CJB 15 If someone acknowledges that Yeshua is the Son of God, God remains united with him, and he with God. NIV 15 If anyone acknowledges that Jesus is the Son of God, God lives in him and he in God. CJB 16 Also we have come to know and trust the love that God has for us. God is love; and those who remain in this love remain united with God, and God remains united with them. NIV 16 And so we know and rely on the love God has for us. God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in him. CJB 17 Here is how love has been brought to maturity with us: as the Messiah is, so are we in the world. This gives us confidence for the Day of Judgment. NIV 17 In this way, love is made complete among us so that we will have confidence on the day of judgment, because in this world we are like him. CJB 18 There is no fear in love. On the contrary, love that has achieved its goal gets rid of fear, because fear has to do with punishment; the person who keeps fearing has not been brought to maturity in regard to love. NIV 18 There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love. CJB 19 We ourselves love now because he loved us first. NIV 19 We love because he first loved us. CJB 20 If anyone says, "I love God," and hates his brother, he is a liar. For if a person does not love his brother, whom he has seen, then he cannot love God, whom he has not seen. NIV 20 If anyone says, "I love God," yet hates his brother, he is a liar. For anyone who does not love his brother, whom he has seen, cannot love God, whom he has not seen. CJB 21 Yes, this is the command we have from him: whoever loves God must love his brother too. NIV 21 And he has given us this command: Whoever loves God must also love his brother.
