ASV 2 as newborn babes, long for the spiritual milk which is without guile, that ye may grow thereby unto salvation; NIV 2 Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation, ASV 3 if ye have tasted that the Lord is gracious: NIV 3 now that you have tasted that the Lord is good. NIV 5 you also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood, offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. ASV 6 Because it is contained in scripture, Behold, I lay in Zion a chief corner stone, elect, precious: And he that believeth on him shall not be put to shame. NIV 6 For in Scripture it says: "See, I lay a stone in Zion, a chosen and precious cornerstone, and the one who trusts in him will never be put to shame." ASV 7 For you therefore that believe is the preciousness: but for such as disbelieve, The stone which the builders rejected, The same was made the head of the corner; NIV 7 Now to you who believe, this stone is precious. But to those who do not believe, "The stone the builders rejected has become the capstone, " ASV 8 and, A stone of stumbling, and a rock of offence; for they stumble at the word, being disobedient: whereunto also they were appointed. ASV 9 But ye are a elect race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for [God's] own possession, that ye may show forth the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvellous light: NIV 9 But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. ASV 10 who in time past were no people, but now are the people of God: who had not obtained mercy, but now have obtained mercy. ASV 11 Beloved, I beseech you as sojourners and pilgrims, to abstain from fleshly lust, which war against the soul; NIV 11 Dear friends, I urge you, as aliens and strangers in the world, to abstain from sinful desires, which war against your soul. ASV 12 having your behavior seemly among the Gentiles; that, wherein they speak against you as evil-doers, they may by your good works, which they behold, glorify God in the day of visitation. NIV 12 Live such good lives among the pagans that, though they accuse you of doing wrong, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day he visits us. ASV 13 Be subject to every ordinance of man for the Lord's sake: whether to the king, as supreme; NIV 13 Submit yourselves for the Lord's sake to every authority instituted among men: whether to the king, as the supreme authority, ASV 14 or unto governors, as sent by him for vengeance on evil-doers and for praise to them that do well. NIV 14 or to governors, who are sent by him to punish those who do wrong and to commend those who do right. ASV 15 For so is the will of God, that by well-doing ye should put to silence the ignorance of foolish men: NIV 15 For it is God's will that by doing good you should silence the ignorant talk of foolish men. NIV 18 Slaves, submit yourselves to your masters with all respect, not only to those who are good and considerate, but also to those who are harsh. ASV 19 For this is acceptable, if for conscience toward God a man endureth griefs, suffering wrongfully. NIV 19 For it is commendable if a man bears up under the pain of unjust suffering because he is conscious of God. ASV 20 For what glory is it, if, when ye sin, and are buffeted [for it], ye shall take it patiently? but if, when ye do well, and suffer [for it], ye shall take it patiently, this is acceptable with God. NIV 20 But how is it to your credit if you receive a beating for doing wrong and endure it? But if you suffer for doing good and you endure it, this is commendable before God. Instead, he entrusted himself to him who judges justly. ASV 24 who his own self bare our sins in his body upon the tree, that we, having died unto sins, might live unto righteousness; by whose stripes ye were healed. NIV 24 He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness; by his wounds you have been healed.
