1 Peter 3

CEB 1 Wives, likewise, submit to your own husbands. Do this so that even if some of them refuse to believe the word, they may be won without a word by their wives' way of life. NRS 1 Wives, in the same way, accept the authority of your husbands, so that, even if some of them do not obey the word, they may be won over without a word by their wives' conduct, CEB 2 After all, they will have observed the reverent and holy manner of your lives. NRS 2 when they see the purity and reverence of your lives. CEB 3 Don't try to make yourselves beautiful on the outside, with stylish hair or by wearing gold jewelry or fine clothes. NRS 3 Do not adorn yourselves outwardly by braiding your hair, and by wearing gold ornaments or fine clothing; CEB 4 Instead, make yourselves beautiful on the inside, in your hearts, with the enduring quality of a gentle, peaceful spirit. This type of beauty is very precious in God's eyes. NRS 4 rather, let your adornment be the inner self with the lasting beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is very precious in God's sight. CEB 5 For it was in this way that holy women who trusted in God used to make themselves beautiful, accepting the authority of their own husbands. NRS 5 It was in this way long ago that the holy women who hoped in God used to adorn themselves by accepting the authority of their husbands. CEB 6 For example, Sarah accepted Abraham's authority when she called him master. You have become her children when you do good and don't respond to threats with fear. NRS 6 Thus Sarah obeyed Abraham and called him lord. You have become her daughters as long as you do what is good and never let fears alarm you. CEB 7 Husbands, likewise, submit by living with your wife in ways that honor her, knowing that she is the weaker partner. Honor her all the more, as she is also a coheir of the gracious care of life. Do this so that your prayers won't be hindered. NRS 7 Husbands, in the same way, show consideration for your wives in your life together, paying honor to the woman as the weaker sex, since they too are also heirs of the gracious gift of life—so that nothing may hinder your prayers. CEB 8 Finally, all of you be of one mind, sympathetic, lovers of your fellow believers, compassionate, and modest in your opinion of yourselves. NRS 8 Finally, all of you, have unity of spirit, sympathy, love for one another, a tender heart, and a humble mind. CEB 9 Don't pay back evil for evil or insult for insult. Instead, give blessing in return. You were called to do this so that you might inherit a blessing. NRS 9 Do not repay evil for evil or abuse for abuse; but, on the contrary, repay with a blessing. It is for this that you were called—that you might inherit a blessing. CEB 10 For those who want to love life and see good days should keep their tongue from evil speaking and their lips from speaking lies. NRS 10 For "Those who desire life and desire to see good days, let them keep their tongues from evil and their lips from speaking deceit; CEB 11 They should shun evil and do good; seek peace and chase after it. NRS 11 let them turn away from evil and do good; let them seek peace and pursue it. CEB 12 The Lord's eyes are on the righteous and his ears are open to their prayers. But the Lord cannot tolerate those who do evil. NRS 12 For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous, and his ears are open to their prayer. But the face of the Lord is against those who do evil." CEB 13 Who will harm you if you are zealous for good? NRS 13 Now who will harm you if you are eager to do what is good? CEB 14 But happy are you, even if you suffer because of righteousness! Don't be terrified or upset by them. NRS 14 But even if you do suffer for doing what is right, you are blessed. Do not fear what they fear, and do not be intimidated, CEB 15 Instead, regard Christ as holy in your hearts. Whenever anyone asks you to speak of your hope, be ready to defend it. NRS 15 but in your hearts sanctify Christ as Lord. Always be ready to make your defense to anyone who demands from you an accounting for the hope that is in you; CEB 16 Yet do this with respectful humility, maintaining a good conscience. Act in this way so that those who malign your good lifestyle in Christ may be ashamed when they slander you. NRS 16 yet do it with gentleness and reverence. Keep your conscience clear, so that, when you are maligned, those who abuse you for your good conduct in Christ may be put to shame. CEB 17 It is better to suffer for doing good (if this could possibly be God's will) than for doing evil. NRS 17 For it is better to suffer for doing good, if suffering should be God's will, than to suffer for doing evil. CEB 18 Christ himself suffered on account of sins, once for all, the righteous one on behalf of the unrighteous. He did this in order to bring you into the presence of God. Christ was put to death as a human, but made alive by the Spirit. NRS 18 For Christ also suffered for sins once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous, in order to bring you to God. He was put to death in the flesh, but made alive in the spirit, CEB 19 And it was by the Spirit that he went to preach to the spirits in prison. NRS 19 in which also he went and made a proclamation to the spirits in prison, CEB 20 In the past, these spirits were disobedient—when God patiently waited during the time of Noah. Noah built an ark in which a few (that is, eight) lives were rescued through water. NRS 20 who in former times did not obey, when God waited patiently in the days of Noah, during the building of the ark, in which a few, that is, eight persons, were saved through water. CEB 21 Baptism is like that. It saves you now—not because it removes dirt from your body but because it is the mark of a good conscience toward God. Your salvation comes through the resurrection of Jesus Christ, NRS 21 And baptism, which this prefigured, now saves you—not as a removal of dirt from the body, but as an appeal to God for a good conscience, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ, CEB 22 who is at God's right side. Now that he has gone into heaven, he rules over all angels, authorities, and powers. NRS 22 who has gone into heaven and is at the right hand of God, with angels, authorities, and powers made subject to him.
