1 Samuel 10:17-27

RSV 17 Now Samuel called the people together to the LORD at Mizpah; NIV 17 Samuel summoned the people of Israel to the LORD at Mizpah RSV 18 and he said to the people of Israel, "Thus says the LORD, the God of Israel, 'I brought up Israel out of Egypt, and I delivered you from the hand of the Egyptians and from the hand of all the kingdoms that were oppressing you.' NIV 18 and said to them, "This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: 'I brought Israel up out of Egypt, and I delivered you from the power of Egypt and all the kingdoms that oppressed you.' RSV 19 But you have this day rejected your God, who saves you from all your calamities and your distresses; and you have said, 'No! but set a king over us.' Now therefore present yourselves before the LORD by your tribes and by your thousands." NIV 19 But you have now rejected your God, who saves you out of all your calamities and distresses. And you have said, 'No, set a king over us.' So now present yourselves before the LORD by your tribes and clans." RSV 20 Then Samuel brought all the tribes of Israel near, and the tribe of Benjamin was taken by lot. NIV 20 When Samuel brought all the tribes of Israel near, the tribe of Benjamin was chosen. RSV 21 He brought the tribe of Benjamin near by its families, and the family of the Matrites was taken by lot; finally he brought the family of the Matrites near man by man, and Saul the son of Kish was taken by lot. But when they sought him, he could not be found. NIV 21 Then he brought forward the tribe of Benjamin, clan by clan, and Matri's clan was chosen. Finally Saul son of Kish was chosen. But when they looked for him, he was not to be found. RSV 22 So they inquired again of the LORD, "Did the man come hither?" and the LORD said, "Behold, he has hidden himself among the baggage." NIV 22 So they inquired further of the LORD, "Has the man come here yet?" And the LORD said, "Yes, he has hidden himself among the baggage." RSV 23 Then they ran and fetched him from there; and when he stood among the people, he was taller than any of the people from his shoulders upward. NIV 23 They ran and brought him out, and as he stood among the people he was a head taller than any of the others. RSV 24 And Samuel said to all the people, "Do you see him whom the LORD has chosen? There is none like him among all the people." And all the people shouted, "Long live the king!" NIV 24 Samuel said to all the people, "Do you see the man the LORD has chosen? There is no one like him among all the people." Then the people shouted, "Long live the king!" RSV 25 Then Samuel told the people the rights and duties of the kingship; and he wrote them in a book and laid it up before the LORD. Then Samuel sent all the people away, each one to his home. NIV 25 Samuel explained to the people the regulations of the kingship. He wrote them down on a scroll and deposited it before the LORD. Then Samuel dismissed the people, each to his own home. RSV 26 Saul also went to his home at Gib'e-ah, and with him went men of valor whose hearts God had touched. NIV 26 Saul also went to his home in Gibeah, accompanied by valiant men whose hearts God had touched. RSV 27 But some worthless fellows said, "How can this man save us?" And they despised him, and brought him no present. But he held his peace. NIV 27 But some troublemakers said, "How can this fellow save us?" They despised him and brought him no gifts. But Saul kept silent.
