NIV 3 "Do not keep talking so proudly or let your mouth speak such arrogance, for the LORD is a God who knows, and by him deeds are weighed. CSB 4 The bows of the warriors are broken, but the feeble are clothed with strength. NIV 4 "The bows of the warriors are broken, but those who stumbled are armed with strength. CSB 5 Those who are full hire themselves out for food, but those who are starving [hunger] no more. The barren woman gives birth to seven, but the woman with many sons pines away. NIV 5 Those who were full hire themselves out for food, but those who were hungry hunger no more. She who was barren has borne seven children, but she who has had many sons pines away. CSB 6 The Lord brings death and gives life; He sends [some] to Sheol, and He raises [others] up. NIV 6 "The LORD brings death and makes alive; he brings down to the grave and raises up. CSB 7 The Lord brings poverty and gives wealth; He humbles and He exalts. NIV 7 The LORD sends poverty and wealth; he humbles and he exalts. For the foundations of the earth are the Lord's; He has set the world on them. NIV 8 He raises the poor from the dust and lifts the needy from the ash heap; he seats them with princes and has them inherit a throne of honor. "For the foundations of the earth are the LORD's; upon them he has set the world. CSB 9 He guards the steps of His faithful ones, but the wicked are silenced in darkness, for a man does not prevail by [his own] strength. NIV 9 He will guard the feet of his saints, but the wicked will be silenced in darkness. "It is not by strength that one prevails; CSB 10 Those who oppose the Lord will be shattered; He will thunder in the heavens against them. The Lord will judge the ends of the earth. He will give power to His king; He will lift up the horn of His anointed. NIV 10 those who oppose the LORD will be shattered. He will thunder against them from heaven; the LORD will judge the ends of the earth. "He will give strength to his king and exalt the horn of his anointed." CSB 11 Elkanah went home to Ramah, but the boy served the Lord in the presence of Eli the priest. NIV 11 Then Elkanah went home to Ramah, but the boy ministered before the LORD under Eli the priest. CSB 12 Eli's sons were wicked men; they had no regard for the Lord NIV 12 Eli's sons were wicked men; they had no regard for the LORD. CSB 13 or for the priests' share [of the sacrifices] from the people. When any man offered a sacrifice, the priest's servant would come with a three-pronged meat fork while the meat was boiling NIV 13 Now it was the practice of the priests with the people that whenever anyone offered a sacrifice and while the meat was being boiled, the servant of the priest would come with a three-pronged fork in his hand. CSB 14 and plunge it into the container or kettle or caldron or cooking pot. The priest would claim for himself whatever the meat fork brought up. This is the way they treated all the Israelites who came there to Shiloh. NIV 14 He would plunge it into the pan or kettle or caldron or pot, and the priest would take for himself whatever the fork brought up. This is how they treated all the Israelites who came to Shiloh. CSB 15 Even before the fat was burned, the priest's servant would come and say to the man who was sacrificing, "Give the priest [some] meat to roast, because he won't accept boiled meat from you-only raw." NIV 15 But even before the fat was burned, the servant of the priest would come and say to the man who was sacrificing, "Give the priest some meat to roast; he won't accept boiled meat from you, but only raw." CSB 16 If that man said to him, "The fat must be burned first; then you can take whatever you want for yourself," the servant would reply, "No, I insist that you hand it over right now. If you don't, I'll take it by force!" NIV 16 If the man said to him, "Let the fat be burned up first, and then take whatever you want," the servant would then answer, "No, hand it over now; if you don't, I'll take it by force." CSB 17 So the servants' sin was very severe in the presence of the Lord, because they treated the Lord's offering with contempt. NIV 17 This sin of the young men was very great in the LORD's sight, for they were treating the LORD's offering with contempt. CSB 18 The boy Samuel served in the Lord's presence and wore a linen ephod. NIV 18 But Samuel was ministering before the LORD--a boy wearing a linen ephod. He heard about everything his sons were doing to all Israel and how they were sleeping with the women who served at the entrance to the tent of meeting. NIV 22 Now Eli, who was very old, heard about everything his sons were doing to all Israel and how they slept with the women who served at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting. CSB 23 He said to them, "Why are you doing these things? I have heard about your evil actions from all these people. NIV 23 So he said to them, "Why do you do such things? I hear from all the people about these wicked deeds of yours. CSB 24 No, my sons, the report I hear from the Lord's people is not good. NIV 24 No, my sons; it is not a good report that I hear spreading among the LORD's people. CSB 25 If a man sins against another man, God can intercede for him, but if a man sins against the Lord, who can intercede for him?" But they would not listen to their father, since the Lord intended to kill them. NIV 25 If a man sins against another man, God may mediate for him; but if a man sins against the LORD, who will intercede for him?" CSB 28 I selected your house from the tribes of Israel to be priests, to offer sacrifices on My altar, to burn incense, and to wear an ephod in My presence. I also gave your house all the Israelite fire offerings. NIV 28 I chose your father out of all the tribes of Israel to be my priest, to go up to my altar, to burn incense, and to wear an ephod in my presence. I also gave your father's house all the offerings made with fire by the Israelites. CSB 29 Why, then, do all of you despise My sacrifices and offerings that I require at the place of worship? You have honored your sons more than Me, by making yourselves fat with the best part of all of the offerings of My people Israel.' NIV 29 Why do you scorn my sacrifice and offering that I prescribed for my dwelling? Why do you honor your sons more than me by fattening yourselves on the choice parts of every offering made by my people Israel?' CSB 30 "Therefore, the Lord, the God of Israel, says: 'Although I said your family and your ancestral house would walk before Me forever, the Lord now says, "No longer!" I will honor those who honor Me, but those who despise Me will be disgraced. NIV 30 "Therefore the LORD, the God of Israel, declares: 'I promised that your house and your father's house would minister before me forever.' But now the LORD declares: 'Far be it from me! Those who honor me I will honor, but those who despise me will be disdained. CSB 31 " 'Look, the days are coming when I will cut off your strength and the strength of your ancestral family, so that none in your family will reach old age. NIV 31 The time is coming when I will cut short your strength and the strength of your father's house, so that there will not be an old man in your family line CSB 32 You will see distress [in the] place of worship, in spite of all that is good in Israel, and no one in your family will ever again reach old age. NIV 32 and you will see distress in my dwelling. Although good will be done to Israel, in your family line there will never be an old man. CSB 33 Any man from your [family] I do not cut off from My altar will bring grief and sadness to you. All your descendants will die violently. NIV 33 Every one of you that I do not cut off from my altar will be spared only to blind your eyes with tears and to grieve your heart, and all your descendants will die in the prime of life. CSB 34 This will be the sign that will come to you concerning your two sons Hophni and Phinehas: both of them will die on the same day. NIV 34 " 'And what happens to your two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, will be a sign to you--they will both die on the same day. CSB 35 " 'Then I will raise up a faithful priest for Myself. He will do whatever is in My heart and mind. I will establish a lasting dynasty for him, and he will walk before My anointed one for all time. NIV 35 I will raise up for myself a faithful priest, who will do according to what is in my heart and mind. I will firmly establish his house, and he will minister before my anointed one always. CSB 36 Anyone who is left in your family will come and bow down to him for a piece of silver or a loaf of bread. He will say: Please appoint me to some priestly office so I can have a piece of bread to eat.' " NIV 36 Then everyone left in your family line will come and bow down before him for a piece of silver and a crust of bread and plead, "Appoint me to some priestly office so I can have food to eat." ' "
