1 Thessalonians 5

WNT 1 But as to times and dates it is unnecessary that anything be written to you. NIV 1 Now, brothers, about times and dates we do not need to write to you, WNT 2 For you yourselves know perfectly well that the day of the Lord comes like a thief in the night. NIV 2 for you know very well that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night. WNT 3 While they are saying "Peace and safety!" then in a moment destruction falls upon them, like birth-pains on a woman who is with child; and escape there is none. NIV 3 While people are saying, "Peace and safety," destruction will come on them suddenly, as labor pains on a pregnant woman, and they will not escape. WNT 4 But you, brethren, are not in darkness, that daylight should surprise you like a thief; NIV 4 But you, brothers, are not in darkness so that this day should surprise you like a thief. WNT 5 for all of you are sons of Light and sons of the day. We belong neither to the night nor to darkness. NIV 5 You are all sons of the light and sons of the day. We do not belong to the night or to the darkness. WNT 6 So then let us not sleep, like the rest of the world, but let us keep awake and be sober. NIV 6 So then, let us not be like others, who are asleep, but let us be alert and self-controlled. WNT 7 For those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who drink freely, drink at night. NIV 7 For those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get drunk, get drunk at night. WNT 8 But let us, belonging--as we do--to the day, be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love, and for a helmet the hope of salvation. NIV 8 But since we belong to the day, let us be self-controlled, putting on faith and love as a breastplate, and the hope of salvation as a helmet. WNT 9 For God has not pre-destined us to meet His anger, but to obtain salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ; NIV 9 For God did not appoint us to suffer wrath but to receive salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ. WNT 10 who died on our behalf, so that whether we are awake or are sleeping we may share His Life. NIV 10 He died for us so that, whether we are awake or asleep, we may live together with him. WNT 11 Therefore encourage one another, and let each one help to strengthen his friend, as in fact you do. NIV 11 Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing. WNT 12 Now we beg you, brethren, to show respect for those who labour among you and are your leaders in Christian work, and are your advisers; NIV 12 Now we ask you, brothers, to respect those who work hard among you, who are over you in the Lord and who admonish you. WNT 13 and to esteem them very highly in love for their work's sake. Be at peace among yourselves. NIV 13 Hold them in the highest regard in love because of their work. Live in peace with each other. WNT 14 And we exhort you, brethren, admonish the unruly, comfort the timid, sustain the weak, and be patient towards all. NIV 14 And we urge you, brothers, warn those who are idle, encourage the timid, help the weak, be patient with everyone. WNT 15 See to it that no one ever repays another with evil for evil; but always seek opportunities of doing good both to one another and to all the world. NIV 15 Make sure that nobody pays back wrong for wrong, but always try to be kind to each other and to everyone else. WNT 16 Be always joyful. NIV 16 Be joyful always; WNT 17 Be unceasing in prayer. NIV 17 pray continually; WNT 18 In every circumstance of life be thankful; for this is God's will in Christ Jesus respecting you. NIV 18 give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus. WNT 19 Do not quench the Spirit. NIV 19 Do not put out the Spirit's fire; WNT 20 Do not think meanly of utterances of prophecy; NIV 20 do not treat prophecies with contempt. WNT 21 but test all such, and retain hold of the good. NIV 21 Test everything. Hold on to the good. WNT 22 Hold yourselves aloof from every form of evil. NIV 22 Avoid every kind of evil. WNT 23 And may God Himself who gives peace, make you entirely holy; and may your spirits, souls and bodies be preserved complete and be found blameless at the Coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. NIV 23 May God himself, the God of peace, sanctify you through and through. May your whole spirit, soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. WNT 24 Faithful is He who calls you, and He will also perfect His work. NIV 24 The one who calls you is faithful and he will do it. WNT 25 Brethren, pray for us. NIV 25 Brothers, pray for us. WNT 26 Greet all the brethren with a holy kiss. NIV 26 Greet all the brothers with a holy kiss. WNT 27 I solemnly charge you in the Lord's name to have this Letter read to all the brethren.
