1 Y Roboam fue a Siquem porque en Siquem se había juntado todo Israel para hacerlo rey.

Rehoboam went to Shechem, for all Israel had gone there to make him king.
2 Y cuando lo oyó Jeroboam hijo de Nabat, el cual estaba en Egipto, donde había huido a causa del rey Salomón, volvió de Egipto.

When Jeroboam son of Nebat heard this (he was in Egypt, where he had fled from King Solomon), he returned from Egypt.
3 Y enviaron y le llamaron. Vino, <I>pues</I> , Jeroboam, y todo Israel, y hablaron a Roboam, diciendo:

So they sent for Jeroboam, and he and all Israel went to Rehoboam and said to him:
4 Tu padre agravó nuestro yugo; afloja tú, pues, ahora <I>algo</I> de la dura servidumbre, y del grave yugo con que tu padre nos apremió, y te serviremos.

“Your father put a heavy yoke on us, but now lighten the harsh labor and the heavy yoke he put on us, and we will serve you.”
5 Y él les dijo: Volved a mí de aquí a tres días. Y el pueblo se fue.

Rehoboam answered, “Come back to me in three days.” So the people went away.
6 Entonces el rey Roboam tomó consejo con los viejos, que habían estado delante de Salomón su padre cuando vivía, y les dijo: ¿Cómo aconsejáis vosotros que responda a este pueblo?

Then King Rehoboam consulted the elders who had served his father Solomon during his lifetime. “How would you advise me to answer these people?” he asked.
7 Y ellos le hablaron, diciendo: Si buscares el bien a este pueblo, y los agradares, y les hablares buenas palabras, <I>ellos</I> te servirán perpetuamente.

They replied, “If you will be kind to these people and please them and give them a favorable answer, they will always be your servants.”
8 Mas él, dejando el consejo que le dieron los viejos, tomó consejo con los jóvenes que se habían criado con él, y que delante de él asistían;

But Rehoboam rejected the advice the elders gave him and consulted the young men who had grown up with him and were serving him.
9 y les dijo: ¿Qué aconsejáis vosotros que respondamos a este pueblo, que me ha hablado, diciendo: Alivia <I>algo</I> del yugo que tu padre puso sobre nosotros?

He asked them, “What is your advice? How should we answer these people who say to me, ‘Lighten the yoke your father put on us’?”
10 Entonces los jóvenes que se habían criado con él, le hablaron, diciendo: Así dirás al pueblo que te ha hablado diciendo, tu padre agravó nuestro yugo, mas tú descárganos. Así les dirás: El <I>dedo</I> más menudo mío es más grueso que los lomos de mi padre.

The young men who had grown up with him replied, “The people have said to you, ‘Your father put a heavy yoke on us, but make our yoke lighter.’ Now tell them, ‘My little finger is thicker than my father’s waist.
11 Así que, mi padre os cargó de grave yugo, y yo añadiré a vuestro yugo; mi padre os castigó con azotes, y yo con escorpiones.

My father laid on you a heavy yoke; I will make it even heavier. My father scourged you with whips; I will scourge you with scorpions.’ ”
12 Vino, pues, Jeroboam con todo el pueblo a Roboam al tercer día; según el rey les había mandado diciendo: Volved a mí de aquí a tres días.

Three days later Jeroboam and all the people returned to Rehoboam, as the king had said, “Come back to me in three days.”
13 Y les respondió el rey ásperamente; <I>pues</I> dejó el rey Roboam el consejo de los viejos,

The king answered them harshly. Rejecting the advice of the elders,
14 y les habló conforme al consejo de los jóvenes, diciendo: Mi padre agravó vuestro yugo, y yo añadiré a vuestro yugo; mi padre os castigó con azotes, y yo con escorpiones.

he followed the advice of the young men and said, “My father made your yoke heavy; I will make it even heavier. My father scourged you with whips; I will scourge you with scorpions.”
15 Y no escuchó el rey al pueblo; porque la causa era de Dios, para cumplir el SEÑOR su palabra que había hablado, por Ahías Silonita, a Jeroboam hijo de Nabat.

So the king did not listen to the people, for this turn of events was from God, to fulfill the word the LORD had spoken to Jeroboam son of Nebat through Ahijah the Shilonite.
16 Y viendo todo Israel que el rey no les había oído, respondió el pueblo al rey, diciendo: ¿Qué parte tenemos nosotros con David, ni herencia en el hijo de Isaí? ¡Israel, cada uno a sus estancias! ¡David, mira ahora por tu casa! Así se fue todo Israel a sus estancias.

When all Israel saw that the king refused to listen to them, they answered the king: “What share do we have in David, what part in Jesse’s son? To your tents, Israel! Look after your own house, David!” So all the Israelites went home.
17 Mas reinó Roboam sobre los hijos de Israel que habitaban en las ciudades de Judá.

But as for the Israelites who were living in the towns of Judah, Rehoboam still ruled over them.
18 Envió <I>luego</I> el rey Roboam a Adoram, que tenía cargo de los tributos; pero le apedrearon los hijos de Israel, y murió. Entonces se esforzó el rey Roboam, y subiendo en un carro huyó a Jerusalén.

King Rehoboam sent out Adoniram, who was in charge of forced labor, but the Israelites stoned him to death. King Rehoboam, however, managed to get into his chariot and escape to Jerusalem.
19 Así se rebeló Israel de la casa de David hasta hoy.

So Israel has been in rebellion against the house of David to this day.
