2 Kings 19

HNV 1 It happened, when king Hizkiyahu heard it, that he tore his clothes, and covered himself with sackcloth, and went into the house of the LORD. NIV 1 When King Hezekiah heard this, he tore his clothes and put on sackcloth and went into the temple of the LORD. HNV 2 He sent Elyakim, who was over the household, and Shevna the Sofer, and the Zakenim of the Kohanim, covered with sackcloth, to Yesha`yahu the prophet the son of Amotz. NIV 2 He sent Eliakim the palace administrator, Shebna the secretary and the leading priests, all wearing sackcloth, to the prophet Isaiah son of Amoz. HNV 3 They said to him, Thus says Hizkiyahu, This day is a day of trouble, and of rebuke, and of rejection; for the children are come to the birth, and there is not strength to bring forth. NIV 3 They told him, "This is what Hezekiah says: This day is a day of distress and rebuke and disgrace, as when children come to the point of birth and there is no strength to deliver them. HNV 4 It may be the LORD your God will hear all the words of Ravshakeh, whom the king of Ashshur his master has sent to defy the living God, and will rebuke the words which the LORD your God has heard. Therefore lift up your prayer for the remnant that is left. NIV 4 It may be that the LORD your God will hear all the words of the field commander, whom his master, the king of Assyria, has sent to ridicule the living God, and that he will rebuke him for the words the LORD your God has heard. Therefore pray for the remnant that still survives." HNV 5 So the servants of king Hizkiyahu came to Yesha`yahu. NIV 5 When King Hezekiah's officials came to Isaiah, HNV 6 Yesha`yahu said to them, Thus shall you tell your master, Thus says the LORD, Don't be afraid of the words that you have heard, with which the servants of the king of Ashshur have blasphemed me. NIV 6 Isaiah said to them, "Tell your master, 'This is what the LORD says: Do not be afraid of what you have heard--those words with which the underlings of the king of Assyria have blasphemed me. HNV 7 Behold, I will put a spirit in him, and he shall hear news, and shall return to his own land; and I will cause him to fall by the sword in his own land. NIV 7 Listen! I am going to put such a spirit in him that when he hears a certain report, he will return to his own country, and there I will have him cut down with the sword.' " HNV 8 So Ravshakeh returned, and found the king of Ashshur warring against Livna; for he had heard that he was departed from Lakhish. NIV 8 When the field commander heard that the king of Assyria had left Lachish, he withdrew and found the king fighting against Libnah. HNV 9 When he heard say of Tirhakah king of Kush, Behold, he is come out to fight against you, he sent messengers again to Hizkiyahu, saying, NIV 9 Now Sennacherib received a report that Tirhakah, the Cushite king [of Egypt], was marching out to fight against him. So he again sent messengers to Hezekiah with this word: HNV 10 Thus shall you speak to Hizkiyahu king of Yehudah, saying, Don't let your God in whom you trust deceive you, saying, Yerushalayim shall not be given into the hand of the king of Ashshur. NIV 10 "Say to Hezekiah king of Judah: Do not let the god you depend on deceive you when he says, 'Jerusalem will not be handed over to the king of Assyria.' HNV 11 Behold, you have heard what the kings of Ashshur have done to all lands, by destroying them utterly: and shall you be delivered? NIV 11 Surely you have heard what the kings of Assyria have done to all the countries, destroying them completely. And will you be delivered? HNV 12 Have the gods of the nations delivered them, which my fathers have destroyed, Gozan, and Haran, and Retzef, and the children of `Eden that were in Telassar? NIV 12 Did the gods of the nations that were destroyed by my forefathers deliver them: the gods of Gozan, Haran, Rezeph and the people of Eden who were in Tel Assar? HNV 13 Where is the king of Hamat, and the king of Arpad, and the king of the city of Sefarvayim, of Hena, and `Ivvah? NIV 13 Where is the king of Hamath, the king of Arpad, the king of the city of Sepharvaim, or of Hena or Ivvah?" HNV 14 Hizkiyahu received the letter from the hand of the messengers, and read it; and Hizkiyahu went up to the house of the LORD, and spread it before the LORD. NIV 14 Hezekiah received the letter from the messengers and read it. Then he went up to the temple of the LORD and spread it out before the LORD. HNV 15 Hizkiyahu prayed before the LORD, and said, LORD, the God of Yisra'el, who sit [above] the Keruvim, you are the God, even you alone, of all the kingdoms of the eretz; you have made heaven and eretz. NIV 15 And Hezekiah prayed to the LORD: "O LORD, God of Israel, enthroned between the cherubim, you alone are God over all the kingdoms of the earth. You have made heaven and earth. HNV 16 Incline your ear, LORD, and hear; open your eyes, LORD, and see; and hear the words of Sancheriv, with which he has sent him to defy the living God. NIV 16 Give ear, O LORD, and hear; open your eyes, O LORD, and see; listen to the words Sennacherib has sent to insult the living God. HNV 17 Of a truth, LORD, the kings of Ashshur have laid waste the nations and their lands, NIV 17 "It is true, O LORD, that the Assyrian kings have laid waste these nations and their lands. HNV 18 and have cast their gods into the fire; for they were no gods, but the work of men's hands, wood and stone; therefore they have destroyed them. NIV 18 They have thrown their gods into the fire and destroyed them, for they were not gods but only wood and stone, fashioned by men's hands. HNV 19 Now therefore, LORD our God, save you us, I beg you, out of his hand, that all the kingdoms of the eretz may know that you LORD are God alone. NIV 19 Now, O LORD our God, deliver us from his hand, so that all kingdoms on earth may know that you alone, O LORD, are God." HNV 20 Then Yesha`yahu the son of Amotz sent to Hizkiyahu, saying, Thus says the LORD, the God of Yisra'el, Whereas you have prayed to me against Sancheriv king of Ashshur, I have heard [you]. NIV 20 Then Isaiah son of Amoz sent a message to Hezekiah: "This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: I have heard your prayer concerning Sennacherib king of Assyria. HNV 21 This is the word that the LORD has spoken concerning him: The virgin daughter of Tziyon has despised you and laughed you to scorn; the daughter of Yerushalayim has shaken her head at you. NIV 21 This is the word that the LORD has spoken against him: " 'The Virgin Daughter of Zion despises you and mocks you. The Daughter of Jerusalem tosses her head as you flee. HNV 22 Whom have you defied and blasphemed? and against whom have you exalted your voice and lifted up your eyes on high? [even] against the Holy One of Yisra'el. NIV 22 Who is it you have insulted and blasphemed? Against whom have you raised your voice and lifted your eyes in pride? Against the Holy One of Israel! HNV 23 By your messengers you have defied the Lord, and have said, With the multitude of my chariots am I come up to the height of the mountains, to the innermost parts of Levanon; and I will cut down the tall cedars of it, and the choice fir trees of it; and I will enter into his farthest lodging-place, the forest of his fruitful field. NIV 23 By your messengers you have heaped insults on the Lord. And you have said, "With my many chariots I have ascended the heights of the mountains, the utmost heights of Lebanon. I have cut down its tallest cedars, the choicest of its pines. I have reached its remotest parts, the finest of its forests. HNV 24 I have dug and drunk strange waters, and with the sole of my feet will I dry up all the rivers of Mitzrayim. NIV 24 I have dug wells in foreign lands and drunk the water there. With the soles of my feet I have dried up all the streams of Egypt." HNV 25 Haven't you heard how I have done it long ago, and formed it of ancient times? now have I brought it to pass, that it should be yours to lay waste fortified cities into ruinous heaps. NIV 25 " 'Have you not heard? Long ago I ordained it. In days of old I planned it; now I have brought it to pass, that you have turned fortified cities into piles of stone. HNV 26 Therefore their inhabitants were of small power, they were dismayed and confounded; they were as the grass of the field, and as the green herb, as the grass on the housetops, and as grain blasted before it is grown up. NIV 26 Their people, drained of power, are dismayed and put to shame. They are like plants in the field, like tender green shoots, like grass sprouting on the roof, scorched before it grows up. HNV 27 But I know your sitting down, and your going out, and your coming in, and your raging against me. NIV 27 " 'But I know where you stay and when you come and go and how you rage against me. HNV 28 Because of your raging against me, and because your arrogance is come up into my ears, therefore will I put my hook in your nose, and my bridle in your lips, and I will turn you back by the way by which you came. NIV 28 Because you rage against me and your insolence has reached my ears, I will put my hook in your nose and my bit in your mouth, and I will make you return by the way you came.' HNV 29 This shall be the sign to you: You shall eat this year that which grows of itself, and in the second year that which springs of the same; and in the third year sow you, and reap, and plant vineyards, and eat the fruit of it. NIV 29 "This will be the sign for you, O Hezekiah: "This year you will eat what grows by itself, and the second year what springs from that. But in the third year sow and reap, plant vineyards and eat their fruit. HNV 30 The remnant that has escaped of the house of Yehudah shall again take root downward, and bear fruit upward. NIV 30 Once more a remnant of the house of Judah will take root below and bear fruit above. HNV 31 For out of Yerushalayim shall go forth a remnant, and out of Mount Tziyon those who shall escape: the zeal of the LORD shall perform this. NIV 31 For out of Jerusalem will come a remnant, and out of Mount Zion a band of survivors. The zeal of the LORD Almighty will accomplish this. HNV 32 Therefore thus says the LORD concerning the king of Ashshur, He shall not come to this city, nor shoot an arrow there, neither shall he come before it with shield, nor cast up a mound against it. NIV 32 "Therefore this is what the LORD says concerning the king of Assyria: "He will not enter this city or shoot an arrow here. He will not come before it with shield or build a siege ramp against it. HNV 33 By the way that he came, by the same shall he return, and he shall not come to this city, says the LORD. NIV 33 By the way that he came he will return; he will not enter this city, declares the LORD. HNV 34 For I will defend this city to save it, for my own sake, and for my servant David's sake. NIV 34 I will defend this city and save it, for my sake and for the sake of David my servant." HNV 35 It happened that night, that the angel of the LORD went forth, and struck in the camp of the Ashshur one hundred eighty-five thousand: and when men arose early in the morning, behold, these were all dead bodies. NIV 35 That night the angel of the LORD went out and put to death a hundred and eighty-five thousand men in the Assyrian camp. When the people got up the next morning--there were all the dead bodies! HNV 36 So Sancheriv king of Ashshur departed, and went and returned, and lived at Nineveh. NIV 36 So Sennacherib king of Assyria broke camp and withdrew. He returned to Nineveh and stayed there. HNV 37 It happened, as he was worshipping in the house of Nisrokh his god, that Adrammelekh and Sar'etzer struck him with the sword: and they escaped into the land of Ararat. Esar-Haddon his son reigned in his place. NIV 37 One day, while he was worshiping in the temple of his god Nisroch, his sons Adrammelech and Sharezer cut him down with the sword, and they escaped to the land of Ararat. And Esarhaddon his son succeeded him as king.
