1 Entonces Ahitofel dijo a Absalón: <em>Yo</em> escogeré ahora doce mil hombres, y me levantaré, y seguiré a David esta noche

2 y daré sobre él, que él estará cansado y flaco de manos; lo atemorizaré, y todo el pueblo que <em>está</em> con él huirá, y heriré al rey solo

3 <em>Así</em> tornaré todo el pueblo a ti; y cuando ellos hubieren vuelto, (pues aquel hombre es el que tú quieres) todo el pueblo estará en paz

4 Esta palabra fue recta en ojos Absalón y de todos los ancianos de Israel

5 Y dijo Absalón: Yo te ruego que llames también a Husai, el arquita, para que asimismo oigamos lo que él dirá

6 Y cuando Husai vino a Absalón, le habló Absalón, diciendo: Así ha dicho Ahitofel; ¿seguiremos su consejo, o no? Di tú

7 Entonces Husai dijo a Absalón: El consejo que ha dado esta vez Ahitofel no es bueno

8 Y añadió Husai: Tú sabes que tu padre y los suyos son hombres valientes, y que están <em>ahora</em> con amargura de ánimo, como la osa en el campo cuando le han quitado los hijos. Además, tu padre <em>es</em> hombre de guerra, y no pasará la noche con el pueblo

9 He aquí él estará ahora escondido en alguna cueva, o en algún otro lugar; y si al principio cayeren algunos <em>de los tuyos</em>, lo oirá quien lo oyere, y dirá: El pueblo que sigue a Absalón ha sido derrotado

10 Así aun el hombre valiente, cuyo corazón sea como corazón de león, sin duda desmayará; porque todo Israel sabe que tu padre es hombre valiente, y que los que <em>están</em> con él son esforzados

11 Mas <em>yo</em> aconsejo que todo Israel se junte a ti, desde Dan hasta Beerseba, <em>que será</em> en multitud como la arena que <em>está</em> a la orilla del mar, y que tú en persona vayas a la batalla

12 Entonces le acometeremos en cualquier lugar que pudiere hallarse, y daremos sobre él como cuando el rocío cae sobre la tierra, y ni uno dejaremos de él, y de todos los que con él están

13 Y si se refugia en <em>alguna</em> ciudad, todos los de Israel traerán sogas a aquella ciudad, y la arrastraremos hasta el arroyo, que nunca más parezca piedra de ella

14 Entonces Absalón y todos los de Israel dijeron: El consejo de Husai, el arquita, es mejor que el consejo de Ahitofel. Porque el SEÑOR había mandado que el acertado consejo de Ahitofel fuera disipado, para que el SEÑOR hiciera venir <em>el</em> mal sobre Absalón

15 Dijo luego Husai a Sadoc y a Abiatar sacerdotes: Así y así aconsejó Ahitofel a Absalón y a los ancianos de Israel; y yo aconsejé así y así

16 Por tanto enviad inmediatamente, y dad aviso a David, diciendo: No <em>te</em> quedes esta noche en los llanos del desierto, sino pasa luego <em>el Jordán</em>, para que el rey no sea consumido, y todo el pueblo que con él está

17 Y Jonatán y Ahimaas estaban junto a la fuente de Rogel, porque no podían ellos mostrarse viniendo a la ciudad; y fue allá una criada, la cual les dio el aviso; y ellos fueron, y dieron aviso al rey David

18 <em>Pero</em> fueron vistos por un joven, el cual lo dijo a Absalón; sin embargo los dos se dieron prisa a caminar, y llegaron a casa de un hombre en Bahurim, que tenía un pozo en su patio, dentro del cual ellos descendieron

19 Y tomando la mujer <em>de la casa</em> una manta, la extendió sobre la boca del pozo, y tendió sobre ella del trigo majado, para que el negocio no fuera entendido

20 Llegando <em>luego</em> los criados de Absalón a la casa a la mujer, le dijeron: ¿Dónde <em>están</em> Ahimaas y Jonatán? Y la mujer les respondió: Ya han pasado el vado de las aguas. Y como ellos los buscaron y no los hallaron volvieron a Jerusalén

21 Y después que ellos partieron, <em>aquellos</em> salieron del pozo, y se fueron, y dieron aviso al rey David; y le dijeron: Levantaos y daos prisa a pasar las aguas, porque Ahitofel ha dado tal consejo contra vosotros

22 Entonces David se levantó, y todo el pueblo que <em>estaba</em> con él, y pasaron el Jordán antes que amaneciera; ni siquiera faltó uno que no pasara el Jordán

23 Y Ahitofel, viendo que no se había seguido su consejo, enalbardó su asno, y se levantó, y se fue a su casa en su ciudad; y ordenó su casa, y se ahorcó y murió, y fue sepultado en el sepulcro de su padre

24 Y David llegó a Mahanaim, y Absalón pasó el Jordán con todos los varones de Israel

25 Y Absalón constituyó a Amasa, sobre el ejército en lugar de Joab, el cual Amasa fue hijo de un varón de Israel llamado Itra, el cual se había unido a Abigail hija de Nahas, hermana de Sarvia, madre de Joab

26 Y asentó campamento Israel con Absalón en tierra de Galaad

27 Y cuando David llegó a Mahanaim, Sobi hijo de Nahas de Rabá de los hijos de Amón, y Maquir hijo de Amiel de Lodebar, y Barzilai galaadita de Rogelim

28 trajeron a David y al pueblo que <em>estaba</em> con él, camas, tazas, vasijas de barro, trigo, cebada, harina, y <em>trigo</em> tostado, habas, lentejas, y <em>garbanzos</em> tostados

29 miel, manteca, ovejas, y quesos de vacas, para que comieran; porque dijeron <em>entre si</em>: Aquel pueblo está hambriento, y cansado, y tendrá sed en el desierto

New International Version NIV

1 Ahithophel said to Absalom, “I would choose twelve thousand men and set out tonight in pursuit of David.

2 I would attack him while he is weary and weak. I would strike him with terror, and then all the people with him will flee. I would strike down only the king

3 and bring all the people back to you. The death of the man you seek will mean the return of all; all the people will be unharmed.”

4 This plan seemed good to Absalom and to all the elders of Israel.

5 But Absalom said, “Summon also Hushai the Arkite, so we can hear what he has to say as well.”

6 When Hushai came to him, Absalom said, “Ahithophel has given this advice. Should we do what he says? If not, give us your opinion.”

7 Hushai replied to Absalom, “The advice Ahithophel has given is not good this time.

8 You know your father and his men; they are fighters, and as fierce as a wild bear robbed of her cubs. Besides, your father is an experienced fighter; he will not spend the night with the troops.

9 Even now, he is hidden in a cave or some other place. If he should attack your troops first, whoever hears about it will say, ‘There has been a slaughter among the troops who follow Absalom.’

10 Then even the bravest soldier, whose heart is like the heart of a lion, will melt with fear, for all Israel knows that your father is a fighter and that those with him are brave.

11 “So I advise you: Let all Israel, from Dan to Beersheba—as numerous as the sand on the seashore—be gathered to you, with you yourself leading them into battle.

12 Then we will attack him wherever he may be found, and we will fall on him as dew settles on the ground. Neither he nor any of his men will be left alive.

13 If he withdraws into a city, then all Israel will bring ropes to that city, and we will drag it down to the valley until not so much as a pebble is left.”

14 Absalom and all the men of Israel said, “The advice of Hushai the Arkite is better than that of Ahithophel.” For the LORD had determined to frustrate the good advice of Ahithophel in order to bring disaster on Absalom.

15 Hushai told Zadok and Abiathar, the priests, “Ahithophel has advised Absalom and the elders of Israel to do such and such, but I have advised them to do so and so.

16 Now send a message at once and tell David, ‘Do not spend the night at the fords in the wilderness; cross over without fail, or the king and all the people with him will be swallowed up.’ ”

17 Jonathan and Ahimaaz were staying at En Rogel. A female servant was to go and inform them, and they were to go and tell King David, for they could not risk being seen entering the city.

18 But a young man saw them and told Absalom. So the two of them left at once and went to the house of a man in Bahurim. He had a well in his courtyard, and they climbed down into it.

19 His wife took a covering and spread it out over the opening of the well and scattered grain over it. No one knew anything about it.

20 When Absalom’s men came to the woman at the house, they asked, “Where are Ahimaaz and Jonathan?” The woman answered them, “They crossed over the brook.” The men searched but found no one, so they returned to Jerusalem.

21 After they had gone, the two climbed out of the well and went to inform King David. They said to him, “Set out and cross the river at once; Ahithophel has advised such and such against you.”

22 So David and all the people with him set out and crossed the Jordan. By daybreak, no one was left who had not crossed the Jordan.

23 When Ahithophel saw that his advice had not been followed, he saddled his donkey and set out for his house in his hometown. He put his house in order and then hanged himself. So he died and was buried in his father’s tomb.

24 David went to Mahanaim, and Absalom crossed the Jordan with all the men of Israel.

25 Absalom had appointed Amasa over the army in place of Joab. Amasa was the son of Jether, an Ishmaelite who had married Abigail , the daughter of Nahash and sister of Zeruiah the mother of Joab.

26 The Israelites and Absalom camped in the land of Gilead.

27 When David came to Mahanaim, Shobi son of Nahash from Rabbah of the Ammonites, and Makir son of Ammiel from Lo Debar, and Barzillai the Gileadite from Rogelim

28 brought bedding and bowls and articles of pottery. They also brought wheat and barley, flour and roasted grain, beans and lentils,

29 honey and curds, sheep, and cheese from cows’ milk for David and his people to eat. For they said, “The people have become exhausted and hungry and thirsty in the wilderness.”
