2 Peter 3:5-15

MSG 5 They conveniently forget that long ago all the galaxies and this very planet were brought into existence out of watery chaos by God's word. NIV 5 But they deliberately forget that long ago by God's word the heavens existed and the earth was formed out of water and by water. MSG 6 Then God's word brought the chaos back in a flood that destroyed the world. NIV 6 By these waters also the world of that time was deluged and destroyed. MSG 7 The current galaxies and earth are fuel for the final fire. God is poised, ready to speak his word again, ready to give the signal for the judgment and destruction of the desecrating skeptics. NIV 7 By the same word the present heavens and earth are reserved for fire, being kept for the day of judgment and destruction of ungodly men. MSG 8 Don't overlook the obvious here, friends. With God, one day is as good as a thousand years, a thousand years as a day. NIV 8 But do not forget this one thing, dear friends: With the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day. MSG 9 God isn't late with his promise as some measure lateness. He is restraining himself on account of you, holding back the End because he doesn't want anyone lost. He's giving everyone space and time to change. NIV 9 The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance. MSG 10 But when the Day of God's Judgment does come, it will be unannounced, like a thief. The sky will collapse with a thunderous bang, everything disintegrating in a huge conflagration, earth and all its works exposed to the scrutiny of Judgment. NIV 10 But the day of the Lord will come like a thief. The heavens will disappear with a roar; the elements will be destroyed by fire, and the earth and everything in it will be laid bare. MSG 11 Since everything here today might well be gone tomorrow, do you see how essential it is to live a holy life? NIV 11 Since everything will be destroyed in this way, what kind of people ought you to be? You ought to live holy and godly lives MSG 12 Daily expect the Day of God, eager for its arrival. The galaxies will burn up and the elements melt down that day - NIV 12 as you look forward to the day of God and speed its coming. That day will bring about the destruction of the heavens by fire, and the elements will melt in the heat. MSG 13 but we'll hardly notice. We'll be looking the other way, ready for the promised new heavens and the promised new earth, all landscaped with righteousness. NIV 13 But in keeping with his promise we are looking forward to a new heaven and a new earth, the home of righteousness. MSG 14 So, my dear friends, since this is what you have to look forward to, do your very best to be found living at your best, in purity and peace. NIV 14 So then, dear friends, since you are looking forward to this, make every effort to be found spotless, blameless and at peace with him. MSG 15 Interpret our Master's patient restraint for what it is: salvation. Our good brother Paul, who was given much wisdom in these matters, NIV 15 Bear in mind that our Lord's patience means salvation, just as our dear brother Paul also wrote you with the wisdom that God gave him.
