2 Samuel 22

NRS 1 David spoke to the Lord the words of this song on the day when the Lord delivered him from the hand of all his enemies, and from the hand of Saul. NIV 1 David sang to the LORD the words of this song when the LORD delivered him from the hand of all his enemies and from the hand of Saul. NRS 2 He said: The Lord is my rock, my fortress, and my deliverer, NIV 2 He said: "The LORD is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer; NRS 3 my God, my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold and my refuge, my savior; you save me from violence. NIV 3 my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield and the horn of my salvation. He is my stronghold, my refuge and my savior-- from violent men you save me. NRS 4 I call upon the Lord, who is worthy to be praised, and I am saved from my enemies. NIV 4 I call to the LORD, who is worthy of praise, and I am saved from my enemies. NRS 5 For the waves of death encompassed me, the torrents of perdition assailed me; NIV 5 "The waves of death swirled about me; the torrents of destruction overwhelmed me. NRS 9 Smoke went up from his nostrils, and devouring fire from his mouth; glowing coals flamed forth from him. NIV 9 Smoke rose from his nostrils; consuming fire came from his mouth, burning coals blazed out of it. NRS 10 He bowed the heavens, and came down; thick darkness was under his feet. NIV 10 He parted the heavens and came down; dark clouds were under his feet. NRS 11 He rode on a cherub, and flew; he was seen upon the wings of the wind. NIV 11 He mounted the cherubim and flew; he soared on the wings of the wind. NRS 12 He made darkness around him a canopy, thick clouds, a gathering of water. NIV 12 He made darkness his canopy around him-- the dark rain clouds of the sky. NRS 13 Out of the brightness before him coals of fire flamed forth. NIV 13 Out of the brightness of his presence bolts of lightning blazed forth. NRS 14 The Lord thundered from heaven; the Most High uttered his voice. NIV 14 The LORD thundered from heaven; the voice of the Most High resounded. NRS 15 He sent out arrows, and scattered them —lightning, and routed them. NIV 15 He shot arrows and scattered [the enemies], bolts of lightning and routed them. NRS 16 Then the channels of the sea were seen, the foundations of the world were laid bare at the rebuke of the Lord, at the blast of the breath of his nostrils. NIV 16 The valleys of the sea were exposed and the foundations of the earth laid bare at the rebuke of the LORD, at the blast of breath from his nostrils. NRS 17 He reached from on high, he took me, he drew me out of mighty waters. NIV 17 "He reached down from on high and took hold of me; he drew me out of deep waters. NRS 18 He delivered me from my strong enemy, from those who hated me; for they were too mighty for me. NIV 18 He rescued me from my powerful enemy, from my foes, who were too strong for me. NRS 19 They came upon me in the day of my calamity, but the Lord was my stay. NIV 19 They confronted me in the day of my disaster, but the LORD was my support. NRS 20 He brought me out into a broad place; he delivered me, because he delighted in me. NIV 20 He brought me out into a spacious place; he rescued me because he delighted in me. NRS 21 The Lord rewarded me according to my righteousness; according to the cleanness of my hands he recompensed me. NIV 21 "The LORD has dealt with me according to my righteousness; according to the cleanness of my hands he has rewarded me. NRS 22 For I have kept the ways of the Lord, and have not wickedly departed from my God. NIV 22 For I have kept the ways of the LORD; I have not done evil by turning from my God. NRS 23 For all his ordinances were before me, and from his statutes I did not turn aside. NIV 23 All his laws are before me; I have not turned away from his decrees. NRS 24 I was blameless before him, and I kept myself from guilt. NIV 24 I have been blameless before him and have kept myself from sin. NRS 25 Therefore the Lord has recompensed me according to my righteousness, according to my cleanness in his sight. NIV 25 The LORD has rewarded me according to my righteousness, according to my cleanness in his sight. NRS 26 With the loyal you show yourself loyal; with the blameless you show yourself blameless; NIV 26 "To the faithful you show yourself faithful, to the blameless you show yourself blameless, NRS 27 with the pure you show yourself pure, and with the crooked you show yourself perverse. NIV 27 to the pure you show yourself pure, but to the crooked you show yourself shrewd. NRS 28 You deliver a humble people, but your eyes are upon the haughty to bring them down. NIV 28 You save the humble, but your eyes are on the haughty to bring them low. NRS 29 Indeed, you are my lamp, O Lord, the Lord lightens my darkness. NIV 29 You are my lamp, O LORD; the LORD turns my darkness into light. NRS 30 By you I can crush a troop, and by my God I can leap over a wall. NIV 30 With your help I can advance against a troop; with my God I can scale a wall. NRS 31 This God—his way is perfect; the promise of the Lord proves true; he is a shield for all who take refuge in him. NIV 31 "As for God, his way is perfect; the word of the LORD is flawless. He is a shield for all who take refuge in him. NRS 32 For who is God, but the Lord? And who is a rock, except our God? NIV 32 For who is God besides the LORD? And who is the Rock except our God? NRS 33 The God who has girded me with strength has opened wide my path. NIV 33 It is God who arms me with strength and makes my way perfect. NRS 34 He made my feet like the feet of deer, and set me secure on the heights. NIV 34 He makes my feet like the feet of a deer; he enables me to stand on the heights. NRS 35 He trains my hands for war, so that my arms can bend a bow of bronze. NIV 35 He trains my hands for battle; my arms can bend a bow of bronze. NRS 36 You have given me the shield of your salvation, and your help has made me great. NIV 36 You give me your shield of victory; you stoop down to make me great. NRS 37 You have made me stride freely, and my feet do not slip; NIV 37 You broaden the path beneath me, so that my ankles do not turn. NRS 38 I pursued my enemies and destroyed them, and did not turn back until they were consumed. NIV 38 "I pursued my enemies and crushed them; I did not turn back till they were destroyed. NRS 39 I consumed them; I struck them down, so that they did not rise; they fell under my feet. NIV 39 I crushed them completely, and they could not rise; they fell beneath my feet. NRS 40 For you girded me with strength for the battle; you made my assailants sink under me. NIV 40 You armed me with strength for battle; you made my adversaries bow at my feet. NRS 41 You made my enemies turn their backs to me, those who hated me, and I destroyed them. NIV 41 You made my enemies turn their backs in flight, and I destroyed my foes. NRS 42 They looked, but there was no one to save them; they cried to the Lord, but he did not answer them. NIV 42 They cried for help, but there was no one to save them-- to the LORD, but he did not answer. NRS 43 I beat them fine like the dust of the earth, I crushed them and stamped them down like the mire of the streets. NIV 43 I beat them as fine as the dust of the earth; I pounded and trampled them like mud in the streets. NRS 44 You delivered me from strife with the peoples; you kept me as the head of the nations; people whom I had not known served me. NIV 44 "You have delivered me from the attacks of my people; you have preserved me as the head of nations. People I did not know are subject to me, NRS 45 Foreigners came cringing to me; as soon as they heard of me, they obeyed me. NIV 45 and foreigners come cringing to me; as soon as they hear me, they obey me. NRS 46 Foreigners lost heart, and came trembling out of their strongholds. NIV 46 They all lose heart; they come trembling from their strongholds. NRS 47 The Lord lives! Blessed be my rock, and exalted be my God, the rock of my salvation, NIV 47 "The LORD lives! Praise be to my Rock! Exalted be God, the Rock, my Savior! NRS 48 the God who gave me vengeance and brought down peoples under me, NIV 48 He is the God who avenges me, who puts the nations under me, NRS 49 who brought me out from my enemies; you exalted me above my adversaries, you delivered me from the violent. NIV 49 who sets me free from my enemies. You exalted me above my foes; from violent men you rescued me. NRS 50 For this I will extol you, O Lord, among the nations, and sing praises to your name. NIV 50 Therefore I will praise you, O LORD, among the nations; I will sing praises to your name. NRS 51 He is a tower of salvation for his king, and shows steadfast love to his anointed, to David and his descendants forever. NIV 51 He gives his king great victories; he shows unfailing kindness to his anointed, to David and his descendants forever."
