2 Samuel 7:1-14

CEB 1 When the king was settled in his palace, and the LORD had given him rest from all his surrounding enemies, NRS 1 Now when the king was settled in his house, and the Lord had given him rest from all his enemies around him, CEB 2 the king said to the prophet Nathan, "Look! I'm living in a cedar palace, but God's chest is housed in a tent!" NRS 2 the king said to the prophet Nathan, "See now, I am living in a house of cedar, but the ark of God stays in a tent." CEB 3 Nathan said to the king, "Go ahead and do whatever you are thinking, because the LORD is with you." NRS 3 Nathan said to the king, "Go, do all that you have in mind; for the Lord is with you." CEB 4 But that very night the LORD's word came to Nathan: NRS 4 But that same night the word of the Lord came to Nathan: CEB 5 Go to my servant David and tell him: This is what the LORD says: You are not the one to build the temple for me to live in. NRS 5 Go and tell my servant David: Thus says the Lord: Are you the one to build me a house to live in? CEB 6 In fact, I haven't lived in a temple from the day I brought Israel out of Egypt until now. Instead, I have been traveling around in a tent and in a dwelling. NRS 6 I have not lived in a house since the day I brought up the people of Israel from Egypt to this day, but I have been moving about in a tent and a tabernacle. CEB 7 Throughout my traveling around with the Israelites, did I ever ask any of Israel's tribal leaders I appointed to shepherd my people: Why haven't you built me a cedar temple? NRS 7 Wherever I have moved about among all the people of Israel, did I ever speak a word with any of the tribal leaders of Israel, whom I commanded to shepherd my people Israel, saying, "Why have you not built me a house of cedar?" CEB 8 So then, say this to my servant David: This is what the LORD of heavenly forces says: I took you from the pasture, from following the flock, to be leader over my people Israel. NRS 8 Now therefore thus you shall say to my servant David: Thus says the Lord of hosts: I took you from the pasture, from following the sheep to be prince over my people Israel; CEB 9 I've been with you wherever you've gone, and I've eliminated all your enemies before you. Now I will make your name great—like the name of the greatest people on earth. NRS 9 and I have been with you wherever you went, and have cut off all your enemies from before you; and I will make for you a great name, like the name of the great ones of the earth. CEB 10 I'm going to provide a place for my people Israel, and plant them so that they may live there and no longer be disturbed. Cruel people will no longer trouble them, as they had been earlier, NRS 10 And I will appoint a place for my people Israel and will plant them, so that they may live in their own place, and be disturbed no more; and evildoers shall afflict them no more, as formerly, CEB 11 when I appointed leaders over my people Israel. And I will give you rest from all your enemies. And the LORD declares to you that the LORD will make a dynasty for you. NRS 11 from the time that I appointed judges over my people Israel; and I will give you rest from all your enemies. Moreover the Lord declares to you that the Lord will make you a house. CEB 12 When the time comes for you to die and you lie down with your ancestors, I will raise up your descendant—one of your very own children—to succeed you, and I will establish his kingdom. NRS 12 When your days are fulfilled and you lie down with your ancestors, I will raise up your offspring after you, who shall come forth from your body, and I will establish his kingdom. CEB 13 He will build a temple for my name, and I will establish his royal throne forever. NRS 13 He shall build a house for my name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever. CEB 14 I will be a father to him, and he will be a son to me. Whenever he does wrong, I will discipline him with a human rod, with blows from human beings. NRS 14 I will be a father to him, and he shall be a son to me. When he commits iniquity, I will punish him with a rod such as mortals use, with blows inflicted by human beings.
