1 Y el ángel del SEÑOR subió de Gilgal a Boquim, y dijo: <I>Yo</I> os saqué de Egipto, y os introduje en la tierra de la cual había jurado a vuestros padres; y dije: No invalidaré jamás mi pacto con vosotros;

2 con tal que vosotros no hagáis alianza con los moradores de esta tierra, antes habéis de destruir sus altares; mas vosotros no habéis oído mi voz; ¿por qué habéis hecho esto?

3 <I>Por tanto yo</I> también dije: No los echaré de delante de vosotros, <I>sino</I> que os serán por <I>azote para vuestros</I> costados, y sus dioses por tropezadero.

4 Y cuando el ángel del SEÑOR habló estas palabras a todos los hijos de Israel, el pueblo lloró en alta voz.

5 Y llamaron por nombre aquel lugar Boquim; y sacrificaron allí al SEÑOR.

6 Porque ya Josué había despedido al pueblo, y los hijos de Israel se habían ido cada uno a su herencia para poseerla.

7 Y el pueblo había servido al SEÑOR todo el tiempo de Josué, y todo el tiempo de los ancianos que vivieron largos días después de Josué, los cuales habían visto todas las grandes obras del SEÑOR, que el había hecho con Israel.

8 Y murió Josué hijo de Nun, siervo del SEÑOR, siendo de ciento diez años.

9 Y lo enterraron en el término de su heredad en Timnat-sera, en el monte de Efraín, al norte del monte de Gaas.

10 Y toda aquella generación fue también recogida con sus padres. Y se levantó después de ellos otra generación, que no conocía al SEÑOR, ni la obra que él había hecho a Israel.

11 Y los hijos de Israel hicieron lo malo en ojos del SEÑOR, y sirvieron a los baales.

12 Y dejaron al SEÑOR el Dios de sus padres, que los había sacado de la tierra de Egipto, y se fueron tras otros dioses, <I>tras</I> los dioses de los pueblos que <I>estaban</I> en sus alrededores, a los cuales adoraron; y provocaron a ira al SEÑOR.

13 Y dejaron al SEÑOR, y adoraron a Baal y a Astarot.

14 Y el furor del SEÑOR se encendió contra Israel, el cual los entregó en manos de robadores que les robaron, y los vendió en manos de sus enemigos de alrededor; y no pudieron parar más delante de sus enemigos.

15 Por dondequiera que salían, la mano del SEÑOR era contra ellos para mal, como el SEÑOR había dicho, y como el SEÑOR se lo había jurado; así los afligió en gran manera.

16 Mas el SEÑOR despertó jueces que los librasen de mano de los que les saqueaban.

17 Y tampoco oyeron a sus jueces, sino que fornicaron tras dioses ajenos, a los cuales adoraron; y se apartaron presto del camino en que anduvieron sus padres escuchando los mandamientos del SEÑOR; <I>mas ellos</I> no hicieron así.

18 Y cuando el SEÑOR les despertaba jueces, el SEÑOR era con el juez, y los libraba de mano de los enemigos todo el tiempo de aquel juez; porque el SEÑOR se arrepentía por sus gemidos a causa de los que los oprimían y afligían.

19 Mas al morir el juez, <I>ellos</I> se tornaban, y se corrompían más que sus padres, siguiendo <I>a</I> dioses ajenos para servirles, e inclinándose delante de ellos; y nada disminuían de sus obras, ni de su obstinado camino.

20 Y la ira del SEÑOR se encendió contra Israel, y dijo: Pues que esta gente traspasa mi pacto que ordené a sus padres, y no escuchen mi voz,

21 tampoco yo echaré más de delante de ellos a ninguno de estos gentiles que dejó Josué cuando murió;

22 para que por ellos probara <I>yo</I> a Israel, si guardarían ellos el camino del SEÑOR andando por él, como sus padres lo guardaron, o no.

23 Por esto dejó el SEÑOR aquellos gentiles, y no los desarraigó luego, ni los entregó en mano de Josué.

New International Version NIV

1 The angel of the LORD went up from Gilgal to Bokim and said, “I brought you up out of Egypt and led you into the land I swore to give to your ancestors. I said, ‘I will never break my covenant with you,

2 and you shall not make a covenant with the people of this land, but you shall break down their altars.’ Yet you have disobeyed me. Why have you done this?

3 And I have also said, ‘I will not drive them out before you; they will become traps for you, and their gods will become snares to you.’ ”

4 When the angel of the LORD had spoken these things to all the Israelites, the people wept aloud,

5 and they called that place Bokim. There they offered sacrifices to the LORD.

6 After Joshua had dismissed the Israelites, they went to take possession of the land, each to their own inheritance.

7 The people served the LORD throughout the lifetime of Joshua and of the elders who outlived him and who had seen all the great things the LORD had done for Israel.

8 Joshua son of Nun, the servant of the LORD, died at the age of a hundred and ten.

9 And they buried him in the land of his inheritance, at Timnath Heres in the hill country of Ephraim, north of Mount Gaash.

10 After that whole generation had been gathered to their ancestors, another generation grew up who knew neither the LORD nor what he had done for Israel.

11 Then the Israelites did evil in the eyes of the LORD and served the Baals.

12 They forsook the LORD, the God of their ancestors, who had brought them out of Egypt. They followed and worshiped various gods of the peoples around them. They aroused the LORD’s anger

13 because they forsook him and served Baal and the Ashtoreths.

14 In his anger against Israel the LORD gave them into the hands of raiders who plundered them. He sold them into the hands of their enemies all around, whom they were no longer able to resist.

15 Whenever Israel went out to fight, the hand of the LORD was against them to defeat them, just as he had sworn to them. They were in great distress.

16 Then the LORD raised up judges, who saved them out of the hands of these raiders.

17 Yet they would not listen to their judges but prostituted themselves to other gods and worshiped them. They quickly turned from the ways of their ancestors, who had been obedient to the LORD’s commands.

18 Whenever the LORD raised up a judge for them, he was with the judge and saved them out of the hands of their enemies as long as the judge lived; for the LORD relented because of their groaning under those who oppressed and afflicted them.

19 But when the judge died, the people returned to ways even more corrupt than those of their ancestors, following other gods and serving and worshiping them. They refused to give up their evil practices and stubborn ways.

20 Therefore the LORD was very angry with Israel and said, “Because this nation has violated the covenant I ordained for their ancestors and has not listened to me,

21 I will no longer drive out before them any of the nations Joshua left when he died.

22 I will use them to test Israel and see whether they will keep the way of the LORD and walk in it as their ancestors did.”

23 The LORD had allowed those nations to remain; he did not drive them out at once by giving them into the hands of Joshua.
