Acts 1

LEB 1 I produced the former account, O Theophilus, about all {that} Jesus began to do and to teach, NIV 1 In my former book, Theophilus, I wrote about all that Jesus began to do and to teach LEB 2 until the day he was taken up, [after he] had given orders through the Holy Spirit to the apostles whom he had chosen, NIV 2 until the day he was taken up to heaven, after giving instructions through the Holy Spirit to the apostles he had chosen. LEB 3 to whom he also presented himself alive after he suffered, with many convincing proofs, appearing to them over a period of forty days and speaking the things about the kingdom of God. NIV 3 After his suffering, he showed himself to these men and gave many convincing proofs that he was alive. He appeared to them over a period of forty days and spoke about the kingdom of God. LEB 4 And [while he] was with [them], he commanded them, "Do not depart from Jerusalem, but wait for what was promised by the Father, which you heard about from me. NIV 4 On one occasion, while he was eating with them, he gave them this command: "Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about. LEB 5 For John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit {not many days from now}." NIV 5 For John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit." LEB 6 So [when] they had come together, they began asking him, saying, "Lord, [is it] at this time you are restoring the kingdom to Israel?" NIV 6 So when they met together, they asked him, "Lord, are you at this time going to restore the kingdom to Israel?" LEB 7 But he said to them, "It is not for you to know [the] times or seasons that the Father has set by his own authority. NIV 7 He said to them: "It is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has set by his own authority. LEB 8 But you will receive power [when] the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the farthest part of the earth." NIV 8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth." LEB 9 And [after he] had said these [things], [while] they were watching, he was taken up, and a cloud received him from their sight. NIV 9 After he said this, he was taken up before their very eyes, and a cloud hid him from their sight. LEB 10 And as they were staring into the sky [while] he was departing, behold, two men in white clothing stood by them NIV 10 They were looking intently up into the sky as he was going, when suddenly two men dressed in white stood beside them. LEB 11 who also said, "Men {of Galilee}, why do you stand there looking into the sky? This Jesus who was taken up from you into heaven like this will come back in the same way you saw him departing into heaven!" NIV 11 "Men of Galilee," they said, "why do you stand here looking into the sky? This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back in the same way you have seen him go into heaven." LEB 12 Then they returned to Jerusalem from the mountain that is called Olive Grove which is near Jerusalem, {a Sabbath day's journey away}. NIV 12 Then they returned to Jerusalem from the hill called the Mount of Olives, a Sabbath day's walk from the city. LEB 13 And when they had entered, they went up to the upstairs room where they were staying--Peter and John and James and Andrew, Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew, James [son] of Alphaeus and Simon the Zealot and Judas [son] of James. NIV 13 When they arrived, they went upstairs to the room where they were staying. Those present were Peter, John, James and Andrew; Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew; James son of Alphaeus and Simon the Zealot, and Judas son of James. LEB 14 All these were busily engaged with one mind in prayer, together with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus and with his brothers. NIV 14 They all joined together constantly in prayer, along with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brothers. LEB 15 And in those days Peter stood up in the midst of the brothers (and it was a crowd of persons of about one hundred twenty at the same [place]) [and] said, NIV 15 In those days Peter stood up among the believers (a group numbering about a hundred and twenty) LEB 16 "Men [and] brothers, it was necessary [that] the scripture be fulfilled, which the Holy Spirit proclaimed beforehand through the mouth of David concerning Judas, who became a guide to those who arrested Jesus, NIV 16 and said, "Brothers, the Scripture had to be fulfilled which the Holy Spirit spoke long ago through the mouth of David concerning Judas, who served as guide for those who arrested Jesus-- LEB 17 because he was counted among us and received a share in this ministry." NIV 17 he was one of our number and shared in this ministry." LEB 18 (Now this man acquired a field for the wages of [his] wickedness, and falling headlong, he burst open in the middle and all his intestines spilled out. NIV 18 (With the reward he got for his wickedness, Judas bought a field; there he fell headlong, his body burst open and all his intestines spilled out. LEB 19 And it became known to all who live in Jerusalem, so that that field was called in their own language "Akeldama," that is, "Field of Blood.") NIV 19 Everyone in Jerusalem heard about this, so they called that field in their language Akeldama, that is, Field of Blood.) LEB 20 "For it is written in the book of Psalms, 'Let his residence become deserted, and let there be no one to live in it,'<note: A quotation from Ps 69:25> and, 'Let another person take his position.'<note: A quotation from Ps 109:8> NIV 20 "For," said Peter, "it is written in the book of Psalms, " 'May his place be deserted; let there be no one to dwell in it,' and, " 'May another take his place of leadership.' LEB 21 Therefore it is necessary for [one] of the men who have accompanied us during all the time [in] which the Lord Jesus went in and went out among us, NIV 21 Therefore it is necessary to choose one of the men who have been with us the whole time the Lord Jesus went in and out among us, LEB 22 beginning from the baptism of John until the day [on] which he was taken up from us--one of these [men] must become a witness of his resurrection together with us." NIV 22 beginning from John's baptism to the time when Jesus was taken up from us. For one of these must become a witness with us of his resurrection." LEB 23 And they proposed two [men], Joseph called Barsabbas (who was called Justus) and Matthias. NIV 23 So they proposed two men: Joseph called Barsabbas (also known as Justus) and Matthias. LEB 24 And they prayed [and] said, "You, Lord, who know the hearts of all, show clearly which one of these two you have chosen NIV 24 Then they prayed, "Lord, you know everyone's heart. Show us which of these two you have chosen LEB 25 to take the place in this ministry and apostleship from which Judas turned aside to depart to his own place." NIV 25 to take over this apostolic ministry, which Judas left to go where he belongs." LEB 26 And they cast lots for them, and the lot fell on Matthias, and he was added [to serve] with the eleven apostles. NIV 26 Then they cast lots, and the lot fell to Matthias; so he was added to the eleven apostles.
