NIV 2 He and all his family were devout and God-fearing; he gave generously to those in need and prayed to God regularly. LEB 3 About the ninth hour of the day, he saw clearly in a vision an angel of God coming to him and saying to him, "Cornelius." NIV 3 One day at about three in the afternoon he had a vision. He distinctly saw an angel of God, who came to him and said, "Cornelius!" LEB 4 And he stared at him and became terrified [and] said, "What is [it], Lord?" And he said to him, "Your prayers and your charitable deeds have gone up for a memorial offering before God. NIV 4 Cornelius stared at him in fear. "What is it, Lord?" he asked. The angel answered, "Your prayers and gifts to the poor have come up as a memorial offering before God. LEB 5 And now, send men to Joppa and summon a certain Simon, who is also called Peter. NIV 5 Now send men to Joppa to bring back a man named Simon who is called Peter. LEB 6 This man is staying as a guest with a certain Simon, a tanner, whose house is by the sea." NIV 6 He is staying with Simon the tanner, whose house is by the sea." LEB 7 And when the angel who spoke to him departed, he summoned two of the household slaves and a devout soldier from those who attended him, NIV 7 When the angel who spoke to him had gone, Cornelius called two of his servants and a devout soldier who was one of his attendants. LEB 8 and [after he] had explained everything to them, he sent them to Joppa. NIV 8 He told them everything that had happened and sent them to Joppa. LEB 9 And the next day, [as] they were on their way and approaching the city, Peter went up on the housetop to pray [at] about the sixth hour. NIV 9 About noon the following day as they were on their journey and approaching the city, Peter went up on the roof to pray. LEB 10 And he became hungry and wanted to eat. But [while] they were preparing [the food], a trance came over him. NIV 10 He became hungry and wanted something to eat, and while the meal was being prepared, he fell into a trance. LEB 11 And he saw heaven opened and an object something like a large sheet coming down, being let down to the earth by its four corners, NIV 11 He saw heaven opened and something like a large sheet being let down to earth by its four corners. LEB 12 in which were all the four-footed animals and reptiles of the earth and birds of the sky. NIV 12 It contained all kinds of four-footed animals, as well as reptiles of the earth and birds of the air. LEB 13 And a voice came to him, "Get up, Peter, slaughter and eat!" NIV 13 Then a voice told him, "Get up, Peter. Kill and eat." LEB 14 But Peter said, "Certainly not, Lord! For I have never eaten anything common and unclean!" NIV 14 "Surely not, Lord!" Peter replied. "I have never eaten anything impure or unclean." LEB 15 And the voice [came] again to him for the second time: "[The things] which God has made clean, you must not consider unclean!" NIV 15 The voice spoke to him a second time, "Do not call anything impure that God has made clean." LEB 16 And this happened three times, and immediately the object was taken up into heaven. NIV 16 This happened three times, and immediately the sheet was taken back to heaven. LEB 17 Now while Peter was greatly perplexed within himself [as to] what the vision that he had seen might be, behold, the men who had been sent by Cornelius, having found the house of Simon by asking around, stood at the gate. NIV 17 While Peter was wondering about the meaning of the vision, the men sent by Cornelius found out where Simon's house was and stopped at the gate. LEB 18 And they called out [and] asked if Simon who was also called Peter was staying there as a guest. NIV 18 They called out, asking if Simon who was known as Peter was staying there. LEB 19 And [while] Peter was reflecting about the vision, the Spirit said to him, "Behold, men are looking for you. NIV 19 While Peter was still thinking about the vision, the Spirit said to him, "Simon, three men are looking for you. LEB 20 But get up, go down, and go with them--not hesitating at all, because I have sent them." NIV 20 So get up and go downstairs. Do not hesitate to go with them, for I have sent them." LEB 21 So Peter went down to the men [and] said, "Behold, I am [he] whom you are looking for! What [is] the reason for which you have come?" NIV 21 Peter went down and said to the men, "I'm the one you're looking for. Why have you come?" LEB 22 And they said, "Cornelius, a centurion, a righteous and God-fearing man--and well spoken of by the whole nation of the Jews--was directed by a holy angel to summon you to his house and to hear words from you." NIV 22 The men replied, "We have come from Cornelius the centurion. He is a righteous and God-fearing man, who is respected by all the Jewish people. A holy angel told him to have you come to his house so that he could hear what you have to say." LEB 23 So he invited them in [and] entertained them as guests, and on the next day he got up [and] went away with them. And some of the brothers from Joppa accompanied him. NIV 23 Then Peter invited the men into the house to be his guests. The next day Peter started out with them, and some of the brothers from Joppa went along. LEB 24 And on the next day he entered into Caesarea. NIV 24 The following day he arrived in Caesarea. Cornelius was expecting them and had called together his relatives and close friends. LEB 25 So it happened that when Peter entered, Cornelius met him, fell at [his] feet, [and] worshiped [him]. NIV 25 As Peter entered the house, Cornelius met him and fell at his feet in reverence. LEB 26 But Peter helped him up, saying, "Get up! I myself am also a man!" NIV 26 But Peter made him get up. "Stand up," he said, "I am only a man myself." LEB 27 And [as he] conversed with him, he went in and found many [people] gathered. NIV 27 Talking with him, Peter went inside and found a large gathering of people. LEB 28 And he said to them, "You know that it is forbidden for a Jewish man to associate with or to approach a foreigner. And to me God has shown [that] I should call no man common or unclean. NIV 28 He said to them: "You are well aware that it is against our law for a Jew to associate with a Gentile or visit him. But God has shown me that I should not call any man impure or unclean. LEB 29 Therefore--and without raising any objection--I came [when I] was sent for. So I ask for what reason you sent for me." NIV 29 So when I was sent for, I came without raising any objection. May I ask why you sent for me?" LEB 30 And Cornelius said, "{Four days ago at this hour}, [the] ninth, I was praying in my house. And behold, a man in shining clothing stood before me NIV 30 Cornelius answered: "Four days ago I was in my house praying at this hour, at three in the afternoon. Suddenly a man in shining clothes stood before me LEB 31 and said, 'Cornelius, your prayer has been heard, and your charitable deeds have been remembered before God. NIV 31 and said, 'Cornelius, God has heard your prayer and remembered your gifts to the poor. LEB 32 Therefore send to Joppa and summon Simon who is also called Peter. This man is staying as a guest in the house of Simon, a tanner, by the sea. NIV 32 Send to Joppa for Simon who is called Peter. He is a guest in the home of Simon the tanner, who lives by the sea.' LEB 33 Therefore I sent for you at once, and you {were kind enough to come}. So now we all are present before God to hear all the things that have been commanded to you by the Lord." NIV 33 So I sent for you immediately, and it was good of you to come. Now we are all here in the presence of God to listen to everything the Lord has commanded you to tell us." LEB 34 So Peter opened [his] mouth [and] said, "In truth I understand that God is not one who shows partiality, NIV 34 Then Peter began to speak: "I now realize how true it is that God does not show favoritism LEB 35 but in every nation the one who fears him and who does what is right is acceptable to him. NIV 35 but accepts men from every nation who fear him and do what is right. LEB 36 [As for] the message that he sent to the sons of Israel, proclaiming the good news of peace through Jesus Christ--this one is Lord of all-- NIV 36 You know the message God sent to the people of Israel, telling the good news of peace through Jesus Christ, who is Lord of all. LEB 37 you know the thing that happened throughout all Judea, beginning from Galilee, after the baptism that John proclaimed: NIV 37 You know what has happened throughout Judea, beginning in Galilee after the baptism that John preached-- LEB 38 Jesus of Nazareth--how God anointed him with the Holy Spirit and with power, who went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, because God was with him. NIV 38 how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power, and how he went around doing good and healing all who were under the power of the devil, because God was with him. LEB 39 And we [are] witnesses of all [the things] that he did both in the land of the Judeans and in Jerusalem, whom they also executed [by] hanging [him] on a tree. NIV 39 "We are witnesses of everything he did in the country of the Jews and in Jerusalem. They killed him by hanging him on a tree, LEB 40 God raised this one up on the third day and granted [that] he should become visible, NIV 40 but God raised him from the dead on the third day and caused him to be seen. LEB 41 not to all the people but to us who had been chosen beforehand by God [as] witnesses, who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead. NIV 41 He was not seen by all the people, but by witnesses whom God had already chosen--by us who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead. LEB 42 And he commanded us to preach to the people and to testify solemnly that this one is the one appointed by God [as] judge of the living and of the dead. NIV 42 He commanded us to preach to the people and to testify that he is the one whom God appointed as judge of the living and the dead. LEB 43 To this one all the prophets testify, [that] through his name everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins." NIV 43 All the prophets testify about him that everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name." LEB 44 [While] Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit fell on all those who were listening to the message. NIV 44 While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit came on all who heard the message. LEB 45 And those believers from the circumcision who had accompanied Peter were astonished that the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out even on the Gentiles, NIV 45 The circumcised believers who had come with Peter were astonished that the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out even on the Gentiles. LEB 46 for they heard them speaking in tongues and glorifying God. Then Peter said, NIV 46 For they heard them speaking in tongues and praising God. Then Peter said, LEB 47 "Surely no one can withhold the water for these [people] to be baptized, who have received the Holy Spirit as we also did!" NIV 47 "Can anyone keep these people from being baptized with water? They have received the Holy Spirit just as we have." LEB 48 So he ordered [that] they be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Then they asked him to stay for several days. NIV 48 So he ordered that they be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Then they asked Peter to stay with them for a few days.
