Acts 13

NAS 1 Now there were at Antioch, in the church that was there, prophets and teachers: Barnabas, and Simeon who was called Niger, and Lucius of Cyrene, and Manaen who had been brought up with Herod the tetrarch, and Saul. NIV 1 In the church at Antioch there were prophets and teachers: Barnabas, Simeon called Niger, Lucius of Cyrene, Manaen (who had been brought up with Herod the tetrarch) and Saul. NAS 2 While they were ministering to the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, "Set apart for Me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them." NIV 2 While they were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, "Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them." NAS 3 Then, when they had fasted and prayed and laid their hands on them, they sent them away. NIV 3 So after they had fasted and prayed, they placed their hands on them and sent them off. NAS 4 So, being sent out by the Holy Spirit, they went down to Seleucia and from there they sailed to Cyprus. NIV 4 The two of them, sent on their way by the Holy Spirit, went down to Seleucia and sailed from there to Cyprus. NAS 5 When they reached Salamis, they began to proclaim the word of God in the synagogues of the Jews; and they also had John as their helper. NIV 5 When they arrived at Salamis, they proclaimed the word of God in the Jewish synagogues. John was with them as their helper. NAS 6 When they had gone through the whole island as far as Paphos, they found a magician, a Jewish false prophet whose name was Bar-Jesus, NIV 6 They traveled through the whole island until they came to Paphos. There they met a Jewish sorcerer and false prophet named Bar-Jesus, NAS 7 who was with the proconsul, Sergius Paulus, a man of intelligence. This man summoned Barnabas and Saul and sought to hear the word of God. NIV 7 who was an attendant of the proconsul, Sergius Paulus. The proconsul, an intelligent man, sent for Barnabas and Saul because he wanted to hear the word of God. NAS 8 But Elymas the magician (for so his name is translated ) was opposing them, seeking to turn the proconsul away from the faith. NIV 8 But Elymas the sorcerer (for that is what his name means) opposed them and tried to turn the proconsul from the faith. NAS 9 But Saul, who was also known as Paul, filled with the Holy Spirit, fixed his gaze on him, NIV 9 Then Saul, who was also called Paul, filled with the Holy Spirit, looked straight at Elymas and said, NAS 10 and said, "You who are full of all deceit and fraud, you son of the devil, you enemy of all righteousness, will you not cease to make crooked the straight ways of the Lord ? NIV 10 "You are a child of the devil and an enemy of everything that is right! You are full of all kinds of deceit and trickery. Will you never stop perverting the right ways of the Lord? NAS 11 "Now, behold, the hand of the Lord is upon you, and you will be blind and not see the sun for a time." And immediately a mist and a darkness fell upon him, and he went about seeking those who would lead him by the hand. NIV 11 Now the hand of the Lord is against you. You are going to be blind, and for a time you will be unable to see the light of the sun." Immediately mist and darkness came over him, and he groped about, seeking someone to lead him by the hand. NAS 12 Then the proconsul believed when he saw what had happened, being amazed at the teaching of the Lord . NIV 12 When the proconsul saw what had happened, he believed, for he was amazed at the teaching about the Lord. NAS 13 Now Paul and his companions put out to sea from Paphos and came to Perga in Pamphylia; but John left them and returned to Jerusalem. NIV 13 From Paphos, Paul and his companions sailed to Perga in Pamphylia, where John left them to return to Jerusalem. NAS 14 But going on from Perga, they arrived at Pisidian Antioch, and on the Sabbath day they went into the synagogue and sat down. NIV 14 From Perga they went on to Pisidian Antioch. On the Sabbath they entered the synagogue and sat down. NAS 15 After the reading of the Law and the Prophets the synagogue officials sent to them, saying, "Brethren , if you have any word of exhortation for the people, say it." NIV 15 After the reading from the Law and the Prophets, the synagogue rulers sent word to them, saying, "Brothers, if you have a message of encouragement for the people, please speak." NAS 16 Paul stood up, and motioning with his hand said, "Men of Israel, and you who fear God, listen: NIV 16 Standing up, Paul motioned with his hand and said: "Men of Israel and you Gentiles who worship God, listen to me! NAS 17 "The God of this people Israel chose our fathers and made the people great during their stay in the land of Egypt, and with an uplifted arm He led them out from it. NIV 17 The God of the people of Israel chose our fathers; he made the people prosper during their stay in Egypt, with mighty power he led them out of that country, NAS 18 "For a period of about forty years He put up with them in the wilderness. NIV 18 he endured their conduct for about forty years in the desert, NAS 19 "When He had destroyed seven nations in the land of Canaan, He distributed their land as an inheritance -all of which took about four hundred and fifty years. NIV 19 he overthrew seven nations in Canaan and gave their land to his people as their inheritance. NAS 20 "After these things He gave them judges until Samuel the prophet. NIV 20 All this took about 450 years. "After this, God gave them judges until the time of Samuel the prophet. NAS 21 "Then they asked for a king, and God gave them Saul the son of Kish, a man of the tribe of Benjamin, for forty years. NIV 21 Then the people asked for a king, and he gave them Saul son of Kish, of the tribe of Benjamin, who ruled forty years. NAS 22 "After He had removed him, He raised up David to be their king, concerning whom He also testified and said, 'I HAVE FOUND DAVID the son of Jesse, A MAN AFTER MY HEART, who will do all My will.' NIV 22 After removing Saul, he made David their king. He testified concerning him: 'I have found David son of Jesse a man after my own heart; he will do everything I want him to do.' NAS 23 "From the descendants of this man, according to promise, God has brought to Israel a Savior, Jesus, NIV 23 "From this man's descendants God has brought to Israel the Savior Jesus, as he promised. NAS 24 after John had proclaimed before His coming a baptism of repentance to all the people of Israel. NIV 24 Before the coming of Jesus, John preached repentance and baptism to all the people of Israel. NAS 25 "And while John was completing his course, he kept saying, 'What do you suppose that I am? I am not He. But behold, one is coming after me the sandals of whose feet I am not worthy to untie.' NIV 25 As John was completing his work, he said: 'Who do you think I am? I am not that one. No, but he is coming after me, whose sandals I am not worthy to untie.' NAS 26 "Brethren , sons of Abraham's family, and those among you who fear God, to us the message of this salvation has been sent. NIV 26 "Brothers, children of Abraham, and you God-fearing Gentiles, it is to us that this message of salvation has been sent. NAS 27 "For those who live in Jerusalem, and their rulers, recognizing neither Him nor the utterances of the prophets which are read every Sabbath, fulfilled these by condemning Him. NIV 27 The people of Jerusalem and their rulers did not recognize Jesus, yet in condemning him they fulfilled the words of the prophets that are read every Sabbath. NAS 28 "And though they found no ground for putting Him to death, they asked Pilate that He be executed. NIV 28 Though they found no proper ground for a death sentence, they asked Pilate to have him executed. NAS 29 "When they had carried out all that was written concerning Him, they took Him down from the cross and laid Him in a tomb. NIV 29 When they had carried out all that was written about him, they took him down from the tree and laid him in a tomb. NAS 30 "But God raised Him from the dead; NIV 30 But God raised him from the dead, NAS 31 and for many days He appeared to those who came up with Him from Galilee to Jerusalem, the very ones who are now His witnesses to the people. NIV 31 and for many days he was seen by those who had traveled with him from Galilee to Jerusalem. They are now his witnesses to our people. NAS 32 "And we preach to you the good news of the promise made to the fathers, NIV 32 "We tell you the good news: What God promised our fathers NAS 33 that God has fulfilled this promise to our children in that He raised up Jesus, as it is also written in the second Psalm, 'YOU ARE MY SON; TODAY I HAVE BEGOTTEN YOU.' NIV 33 he has fulfilled for us, their children, by raising up Jesus. As it is written in the second Psalm: " 'You are my Son; today I have become your Father. ' NAS 34 "As for the fact that He raised Him up from the dead, no longer to return to decay, He has spoken in this way: 'I WILL GIVE YOU THE HOLY and SURE blessings OF DAVID.' NIV 34 The fact that God raised him from the dead, never to decay, is stated in these words: " 'I will give you the holy and sure blessings promised to David.' NAS 35 "Therefore He also says in another Psalm, 'YOU WILL NOT ALLOW YOUR HOLY ONE TO UNDERGO DECAY.' NIV 35 So it is stated elsewhere: " 'You will not let your Holy One see decay.' NAS 36 "For David, after he had served the purpose of God in his own generation, fell asleep, and was laid among his fathers and underwent decay; NIV 36 "For when David had served God's purpose in his own generation, he fell asleep; he was buried with his fathers and his body decayed. NAS 37 but He whom God raised did not undergo decay. NIV 37 But the one whom God raised from the dead did not see decay. NAS 38 "Therefore let it be known to you, brethren , that through Him forgiveness of sins is proclaimed to you, NIV 38 "Therefore, my brothers, I want you to know that through Jesus the forgiveness of sins is proclaimed to you. NAS 39 and through Him everyone who believes is freed from all things, from which you could not be freed through the Law of Moses. NIV 39 Through him everyone who believes is justified from everything you could not be justified from by the law of Moses. NAS 40 "Therefore take heed, so that the thing spoken of in the Prophets may not come upon you: NIV 40 Take care that what the prophets have said does not happen to you: NAS 41 'BEHOLD, YOU SCOFFERS, AND MARVEL, AND PERISH; FOR I AM ACCOMPLISHING A WORK IN YOUR DAYS, A WORK WHICH YOU WILL NEVER BELIEVE, THOUGH SOMEONE SHOULD DESCRIBE IT TO YOU.' " NIV 41 " 'Look, you scoffers, wonder and perish, for I am going to do something in your days that you would never believe, even if someone told you.' " NAS 42 As Paul and Barnabas were going out, the people kept begging that these things might be spoken to them the next Sabbath. NIV 42 As Paul and Barnabas were leaving the synagogue, the people invited them to speak further about these things on the next Sabbath. NAS 43 Now when the meeting of the synagogue had broken up, many of the Jews and of the God-fearing proselytes followed Paul and Barnabas, who, speaking to them, were urging them to continue in the grace of God. NIV 43 When the congregation was dismissed, many of the Jews and devout converts to Judaism followed Paul and Barnabas, who talked with them and urged them to continue in the grace of God. NAS 44 The next Sabbath nearly the whole city assembled to hear the word of the Lord . NIV 44 On the next Sabbath almost the whole city gathered to hear the word of the Lord. NAS 45 But when the Jews saw the crowds, they were filled with jealousy and began contradicting the things spoken by Paul, and were blaspheming. NIV 45 When the Jews saw the crowds, they were filled with jealousy and talked abusively against what Paul was saying. NAS 46 Paul and Barnabas spoke out boldly and said, "It was necessary that the word of God be spoken to you first; since you repudiate it and judge yourselves unworthy of eternal life, behold, we are turning to the Gentiles. NIV 46 Then Paul and Barnabas answered them boldly: "We had to speak the word of God to you first. Since you reject it and do not consider yourselves worthy of eternal life, we now turn to the Gentiles. NAS 47 "For so the Lord has commanded us, 'I HAVE PLACED YOU AS A LIGHT FOR THE GENTILES, THAT YOU MAY BRING SALVATION TO THE END OF THE EARTH.' " NIV 47 For this is what the Lord has commanded us: " 'I have made you a light for the Gentiles, that you may bring salvation to the ends of the earth.' " NAS 48 When the Gentiles heard this, they began rejoicing and glorifying the word of the Lord ; and as many as had been appointed to eternal life believed. NIV 48 When the Gentiles heard this, they were glad and honored the word of the Lord; and all who were appointed for eternal life believed. NAS 49 And the word of the Lord was being spread through the whole region. NIV 49 The word of the Lord spread through the whole region. NAS 50 But the Jews incited the devout women of prominence and the leading men of the city, and instigated a persecution against Paul and Barnabas, and drove them out of their district. NIV 50 But the Jews incited the God-fearing women of high standing and the leading men of the city. They stirred up persecution against Paul and Barnabas, and expelled them from their region. NAS 51 But they shook off the dust of their feet in protest against them and went to Iconium. NIV 51 So they shook the dust from their feet in protest against them and went to Iconium.
