Acts 2

MSG 1 When the Feast of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. NIV 1 When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. MSG 2 Without warning there was a sound like a strong wind, gale force - no one could tell where it came from. It filled the whole building. NIV 2 Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. MSG 3 Then, like a wildfire, the Holy Spirit spread through their ranks, NIV 3 They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. MSG 4 and they started speaking in a number of different languages as the Spirit prompted them. NIV 4 All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them. MSG 5 There were many Jews staying in Jerusalem just then, devout pilgrims from all over the world. NIV 5 Now there were staying in Jerusalem God-fearing Jews from every nation under heaven. MSG 6 When they heard the sound, they came on the run. Then when they heard, one after another, their own mother tongues being spoken, they were thunderstruck. NIV 6 When they heard this sound, a crowd came together in bewilderment, because each one heard them speaking in his own language. MSG 7 They couldn't for the life of them figure out what was going on, and kept saying, "Aren't these all Galileans? NIV 7 Utterly amazed, they asked: "Are not all these men who are speaking Galileans? MSG 8 How come we're hearing them talk in our various mother tongues? NIV 8 Then how is it that each of us hears them in his own native language? MSG 9 Parthians, Medes, and Elamites; Visitors from Mesopotamia, Judea, and Cappadocia, NIV 9 Parthians, Medes and Elamites; residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, MSG 10 Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene; NIV 10 Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya near Cyrene; visitors from Rome MSG 11 both Jews and proselytes; Even Cretans and Arabs! "They're speaking our languages, describing God's mighty works!" NIV 11 (both Jews and converts to Judaism); Cretans and Arabs--we hear them declaring the wonders of God in our own tongues!" MSG 12 Their heads were spinning; they couldn't make head or tail of any of it. They talked back and forth, confused: "What's going on here?" NIV 12 Amazed and perplexed, they asked one another, "What does this mean?" MSG 13 Others joked, "They're drunk on cheap wine." NIV 13 Some, however, made fun of them and said, "They have had too much wine. " MSG 14 That's when Peter stood up and, backed by the other eleven, spoke out with bold urgency: "Fellow Jews, all of you who are visiting Jerusalem, listen carefully and get this story straight. NIV 14 Then Peter stood up with the Eleven, raised his voice and addressed the crowd: "Fellow Jews and all of you who live in Jerusalem, let me explain this to you; listen carefully to what I say. MSG 15 These people aren't drunk as some of you suspect. They haven't had time to get drunk - it's only nine o'clock in the morning. NIV 15 These men are not drunk, as you suppose. It's only nine in the morning! MSG 16 This is what the prophet Joel announced would happen: NIV 16 No, this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel: MSG 17 "In the Last Days," God says, "I will pour out my Spirit on every kind of people: Your sons will prophesy, also your daughters; Your young men will see visions, your old men dream dreams. NIV 17 " 'In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, your old men will dream dreams. MSG 18 When the time comes, I'll pour out my Spirit On those who serve me, men and women both, and they'll prophesy. NIV 18 Even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days, and they will prophesy. MSG 19 I'll set wonders in the sky above and signs on the earth below, Blood and fire and billowing smoke, NIV 19 I will show wonders in the heaven above and signs on the earth below, blood and fire and billows of smoke. MSG 20 the sun turning black and the moon blood-red, Before the Day of the Lord arrives, the Day tremendous and marvelous; NIV 20 The sun will be turned to darkness and the moon to blood before the coming of the great and glorious day of the Lord. MSG 21 And whoever calls out for help to me, God, will be saved." NIV 21 And everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.' MSG 22 "Fellow Israelites, listen carefully to these words: Jesus the Nazarene, a man thoroughly accredited by God to you - the miracles and wonders and signs that God did through him are common knowledge - NIV 22 "Men of Israel, listen to this: Jesus of Nazareth was a man accredited by God to you by miracles, wonders and signs, which God did among you through him, as you yourselves know. MSG 23 this Jesus, following the deliberate and well-thought-out plan of God, was betrayed by men who took the law into their own hands, and was handed over to you. And you pinned him to a cross and killed him. NIV 23 This man was handed over to you by God's set purpose and foreknowledge; and you, with the help of wicked men, put him to death by nailing him to the cross. MSG 24 But God untied the death ropes and raised him up. Death was no match for him. NIV 24 But God raised him from the dead, freeing him from the agony of death, because it was impossible for death to keep its hold on him. MSG 25 David said it all: I saw God before me for all time. Nothing can shake me; he's right by my side. NIV 25 David said about him: " 'I saw the Lord always before me. Because he is at my right hand, I will not be shaken. MSG 26 I'm glad from the inside out, ecstatic; I've pitched my tent in the land of hope. NIV 26 Therefore my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices; my body also will live in hope, MSG 27 I know you'll never dump me in Hades; I'll never even smell the stench of death. NIV 27 because you will not abandon me to the grave, nor will you let your Holy One see decay. MSG 28 You've got my feet on the life-path, with your face shining sun-joy all around. NIV 28 You have made known to me the paths of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence.' MSG 29 "Dear friends, let me be completely frank with you. Our ancestor David is dead and buried - his tomb is in plain sight today. NIV 29 "Brothers, I can tell you confidently that the patriarch David died and was buried, and his tomb is here to this day. MSG 30 But being also a prophet and knowing that God had solemnly sworn that a descendant of his would rule his kingdom, NIV 30 But he was a prophet and knew that God had promised him on oath that he would place one of his descendants on his throne. MSG 31 seeing far ahead, he talked of the resurrection of the Messiah - 'no trip to Hades, no stench of death.' NIV 31 Seeing what was ahead, he spoke of the resurrection of the Christ, that he was not abandoned to the grave, nor did his body see decay. MSG 32 This Jesus, God raised up. And every one of us here is a witness to it. NIV 32 God has raised this Jesus to life, and we are all witnesses of the fact. MSG 33 Then, raised to the heights at the right hand of God and receiving the promise of the Holy Spirit from the Father, he poured out the Spirit he had just received. That is what you see and hear. NIV 33 Exalted to the right hand of God, he has received from the Father the promised Holy Spirit and has poured out what you now see and hear. MSG 34 For David himself did not ascend to heaven, but he did say, God said to my Master, "Sit at my right hand NIV 34 For David did not ascend to heaven, and yet he said, " 'The Lord said to my Lord: "Sit at my right hand MSG 35 Until I make your enemies a stool for resting your feet." NIV 35 until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet." ' MSG 36 "All Israel, then, know this: There's no longer room for doubt - God made him Master and Messiah, this Jesus whom you killed on a cross." NIV 36 "Therefore let all Israel be assured of this: God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Christ." MSG 37 Cut to the quick, those who were there listening asked Peter and the other apostles, "Brothers! Brothers! So now what do we do?" NIV 37 When the people heard this, they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and the other apostles, "Brothers, what shall we do?" MSG 38 Peter said, "Change your life. Turn to God and be baptized, each of you, in the name of Jesus Christ, so your sins are forgiven. Receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. NIV 38 Peter replied, "Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. MSG 39 The promise is targeted to you and your children, but also to all who are far away - whomever, in fact, our Master God invites." NIV 39 The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off--for all whom the Lord our God will call." MSG 40 He went on in this vein for a long time, urging them over and over, "Get out while you can; get out of this sick and stupid culture!" NIV 40 With many other words he warned them; and he pleaded with them, "Save yourselves from this corrupt generation." MSG 41 That day about three thousand took him at his word, were baptized and were signed up. MSG 45 They sold whatever they owned and pooled their resources so that each person's need was met. NIV 45 Selling their possessions and goods, they gave to anyone as he had need. MSG 46 They followed a daily discipline of worship in the Temple followed by meals at home, every meal a celebration, exuberant and joyful, NIV 46 Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, MSG 47 as they praised God. People in general liked what they saw. Every day their number grew as God added those who were saved. NIV 47 praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.
