Acts 4

NKJV 1 Now as they spoke to the people, the priests, the captain of the temple, and the Sadducees came upon them, NIV 1 The priests and the captain of the temple guard and the Sadducees came up to Peter and John while they were speaking to the people. NKJV 2 being greatly disturbed that they taught the people and preached in Jesus the resurrection from the dead. NIV 2 They were greatly disturbed because the apostles were teaching the people and proclaiming in Jesus the resurrection of the dead. NKJV 3 And they laid hands on them, and put them in custody until the next day, for it was already evening. NIV 3 They seized Peter and John, and because it was evening, they put them in jail until the next day. NKJV 4 However, many of those who heard the word believed; and the number of the men came to be about five thousand. NIV 4 But many who heard the message believed, and the number of men grew to about five thousand. NKJV 5 And it came to pass, on the next day, that their rulers, elders, and scribes, NIV 5 The next day the rulers, elders and teachers of the law met in Jerusalem. NKJV 6 as well as Annas the high priest, Caiaphas, John, and Alexander, and as many as were of the family of the high priest, were gathered together at Jerusalem. NIV 6 Annas the high priest was there, and so were Caiaphas, John, Alexander and the other men of the high priest's family. NKJV 7 And when they had set them in the midst, they asked, "By what power or by what name have you done this?" NIV 7 They had Peter and John brought before them and began to question them: "By what power or what name did you do this?" NKJV 8 Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them, "Rulers of the people and elders of Israel: NIV 8 Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them: "Rulers and elders of the people! NKJV 9 If we this day are judged for a good deed done to a helpless man, by what means he has been made well, NIV 9 If we are being called to account today for an act of kindness shown to a cripple and are asked how he was healed, NKJV 10 let it be known to you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead, by Him this man stands here before you whole. NIV 10 then know this, you and all the people of Israel: It is by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified but whom God raised from the dead, that this man stands before you healed. NKJV 11 This is the 'stone which was rejected by you builders, which has become the chief cornerstone.' NIV 11 He is " 'the stone you builders rejected, which has become the capstone. ' NKJV 12 Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved." NIV 12 Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved." NKJV 13 Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were uneducated and untrained men, they marveled. And they realized that they had been with Jesus. NIV 13 When they saw the courage of Peter and John and realized that they were unschooled, ordinary men, they were astonished and they took note that these men had been with Jesus. NKJV 14 And seeing the man who had been healed standing with them, they could say nothing against it. NIV 14 But since they could see the man who had been healed standing there with them, there was nothing they could say. NKJV 15 But when they had commanded them to go aside out of the council, they conferred among themselves, NIV 15 So they ordered them to withdraw from the Sanhedrin and then conferred together. NKJV 16 saying, "What shall we do to these men? For, indeed, that a notable miracle has been done through them is evident to all who dwell in Jerusalem, and we cannot deny it. NIV 16 "What are we going to do with these men?" they asked. "Everybody living in Jerusalem knows they have done an outstanding miracle, and we cannot deny it. NKJV 17 But so that it spreads no further among the people, let us severely threaten them, that from now on they speak to no man in this name." NIV 17 But to stop this thing from spreading any further among the people, we must warn these men to speak no longer to anyone in this name." NKJV 18 And they called them and commanded them not to speak at all nor teach in the name of Jesus. NIV 18 Then they called them in again and commanded them not to speak or teach at all in the name of Jesus. NKJV 19 But Peter and John answered and said to them, "Whether it is right in the sight of God to listen to you more than to God, you judge. NIV 19 But Peter and John replied, "Judge for yourselves whether it is right in God's sight to obey you rather than God. NKJV 20 For we cannot but speak the things which we have seen and heard." NIV 20 For we cannot help speaking about what we have seen and heard." NKJV 21 So when they had further threatened them, they let them go, finding no way of punishing them, because of the people, since they all glorified God for what had been done. NIV 21 After further threats they let them go. They could not decide how to punish them, because all the people were praising God for what had happened. NKJV 22 For the man was over forty years old on whom this miracle of healing had been performed. NIV 22 For the man who was miraculously healed was over forty years old. NKJV 23 And being let go, they went to their own companions and reported all that the chief priests and elders had said to them. NIV 23 On their release, Peter and John went back to their own people and reported all that the chief priests and elders had said to them. NKJV 24 So when they heard that, they raised their voice to God with one accord and said: "Lord, You are God, who made heaven and earth and the sea, and all that is in them, NIV 24 When they heard this, they raised their voices together in prayer to God. "Sovereign Lord," they said, "you made the heaven and the earth and the sea, and everything in them. NKJV 25 who by the mouth of Your servant David have said: 'Why did the nations rage, And the people plot vain things? NIV 25 You spoke by the Holy Spirit through the mouth of your servant, our father David: " 'Why do the nations rage and the peoples plot in vain? NKJV 26 The kings of the earth took their stand, And the rulers were gathered together Against the Lord and against His Christ.' NIV 26 The kings of the earth take their stand and the rulers gather together against the Lord and against his Anointed One. ' NKJV 27 "For truly against Your holy Servant Jesus, whom You anointed, both Herod and Pontius Pilate, with the Gentiles and the people of Israel, were gathered together NIV 27 Indeed Herod and Pontius Pilate met together with the Gentiles and the people of Israel in this city to conspire against your holy servant Jesus, whom you anointed. NKJV 28 to do whatever Your hand and Your purpose determined before to be done. NIV 28 They did what your power and will had decided beforehand should happen. NKJV 29 Now, Lord, look on their threats, and grant to Your servants that with all boldness they may speak Your word, NIV 29 Now, Lord, consider their threats and enable your servants to speak your word with great boldness. NKJV 30 by stretching out Your hand to heal, and that signs and wonders may be done through the name of Your holy Servant Jesus." NIV 30 Stretch out your hand to heal and perform miraculous signs and wonders through the name of your holy servant Jesus." NKJV 31 And when they had prayed, the place where they were assembled together was shaken; and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and they spoke the word of God with boldness. NIV 31 After they prayed, the place where they were meeting was shaken. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke the word of God boldly. NKJV 32 Now the multitude of those who believed were of one heart and one soul; neither did anyone say that any of the things he possessed was his own, but they had all things in common. NIV 32 All the believers were one in heart and mind. No one claimed that any of his possessions was his own, but they shared everything they had. NKJV 33 And with great power the apostles gave witness to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus. And great grace was upon them all. NIV 33 With great power the apostles continued to testify to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and much grace was upon them all. NKJV 34 Nor was there anyone among them who lacked; for all who were possessors of lands or houses sold them, and brought the proceeds of the things that were sold, NIV 34 There were no needy persons among them. For from time to time those who owned lands or houses sold them, brought the money from the sales NKJV 35 and laid them at the apostles' feet; and they distributed to each as anyone had need. NIV 35 and put it at the apostles' feet, and it was distributed to anyone as he had need. NKJV 36 And Joses, who was also named Barnabas by the apostles (which is translated Son of Encouragement), a Levite of the country of Cyprus, NIV 36 Joseph, a Levite from Cyprus, whom the apostles called Barnabas (which means Son of Encouragement), NKJV 37 having land, sold it, and brought the money and laid it at the apostles' feet. NIV 37 sold a field he owned and brought the money and put it at the apostles' feet.
