Acts 8:5-40

RSV 5 Philip went down to a city of Sama'ria, and proclaimed to them the Christ. NIV 5 Philip went down to a city in Samaria and proclaimed the Christ there. RSV 6 And the multitudes with one accord gave heed to what was said by Philip, when they heard him and saw the signs which he did. NIV 6 When the crowds heard Philip and saw the miraculous signs he did, they all paid close attention to what he said. RSV 7 For unclean spirits came out of many who were possessed, crying with a loud voice; and many who were paralyzed or lame were healed. NIV 7 With shrieks, evil spirits came out of many, and many paralytics and cripples were healed. RSV 8 So there was much joy in that city. NIV 8 So there was great joy in that city. RSV 9 But there was a man named Simon who had previously practiced magic in the city and amazed the nation of Sama'ria, saying that he himself was somebody great. NIV 9 Now for some time a man named Simon had practiced sorcery in the city and amazed all the people of Samaria. He boasted that he was someone great, RSV 10 They all gave heed to him, from the least to the greatest, saying, "This man is that power of God which is called Great." NIV 10 and all the people, both high and low, gave him their attention and exclaimed, "This man is the divine power known as the Great Power." RSV 11 And they gave heed to him, because for a long time he had amazed them with his magic. NIV 11 They followed him because he had amazed them for a long time with his magic. RSV 12 But when they believed Philip as he preached good news about the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women. RSV 13 Even Simon himself believed, and after being baptized he continued with Philip. And seeing signs and great miracles performed, he was amazed. NIV 13 Simon himself believed and was baptized. RSV 18 Now when Simon saw that the Spirit was given through the laying on of the apostles' hands, he offered them money, NIV 18 When Simon saw that the Spirit was given at the laying on of the apostles' hands, he offered them money RSV 19 saying, "Give me also this power, that any one on whom I lay my hands may receive the Holy Spirit." NIV 19 and said, "Give me also this ability so that everyone on whom I lay my hands may receive the Holy Spirit." RSV 20 But Peter said to him, "Your silver perish with you, because you thought you could obtain the gift of God with money! NIV 20 Peter answered: "May your money perish with you, because you thought you could buy the gift of God with money! RSV 21 You have neither part nor lot in this matter, for your heart is not right before God. NIV 21 You have no part or share in this ministry, because your heart is not right before God. RSV 22 Repent therefore of this wickedness of yours, and pray to the Lord that, if possible, the intent of your heart may be forgiven you. NIV 22 Repent of this wickedness and pray to the Lord. Perhaps he will forgive you for having such a thought in your heart. RSV 23 For I see that you are in the gall of bitterness and in the bond of iniquity." NIV 23 For I see that you are full of bitterness and captive to sin." RSV 24 And Simon answered, "Pray for me to the Lord, that nothing of what you have said may come upon me." NIV 24 Then Simon answered, "Pray to the Lord for me so that nothing you have said may happen to me." RSV 25 Now when they had testified and spoken the word of the Lord, they returned to Jerusalem, preaching the gospel to many villages of the Samaritans. NIV 25 When they had testified and proclaimed the word of the Lord, Peter and John returned to Jerusalem, preaching the gospel in many Samaritan villages. RSV 26 But an angel of the Lord said to Philip, "Rise and go toward the south to the road that goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza." This is a desert road. NIV 26 Now an angel of the Lord said to Philip, "Go south to the road--the desert road--that goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza." RSV 27 And he rose and went. And behold, an Ethiopian, a eunuch, a minister of the Can'dace, queen of the Ethiopians, in charge of all her treasure, had come to Jerusalem to worship NIV 27 So he started out, and on his way he met an Ethiopian eunuch, an important official in charge of all the treasury of Candace, queen of the Ethiopians. This man had gone to Jerusalem to worship, RSV 28 and was returning; seated in his chariot, he was reading the prophet Isaiah. NIV 28 and on his way home was sitting in his chariot reading the book of Isaiah the prophet. RSV 29 And the Spirit said to Philip, "Go up and join this chariot." NIV 29 The Spirit told Philip, "Go to that chariot and stay near it." RSV 30 So Philip ran to him, and heard him reading Isaiah the prophet, and asked, "Do you understand what you are reading?" NIV 30 Then Philip ran up to the chariot and heard the man reading Isaiah the prophet. "Do you understand what you are reading?" Philip asked. RSV 31 And he said, "How can I, unless some one guides me?" And he invited Philip to come up and sit with him. NIV 31 "How can I," he said, "unless someone explains it to me?" So he invited Philip to come up and sit with him. RSV 32 Now the passage of the scripture which he was reading was this: "As a sheep led to the slaughter or a lamb before its shearer is dumb, so he opens not his mouth. NIV 32 The eunuch was reading this passage of Scripture: "He was led like a sheep to the slaughter, and as a lamb before the shearer is silent, so he did not open his mouth. RSV 33 In his humiliation justice was denied him. Who can describe his generation? For his life is taken up from the earth." NIV 33 In his humiliation he was deprived of justice. Who can speak of his descendants? For his life was taken from the earth." RSV 34 And the eunuch said to Philip, "About whom, pray, does the prophet say this, about himself or about some one else?" NIV 34 The eunuch asked Philip, "Tell me, please, who is the prophet talking about, himself or someone else?" RSV 35 Then Philip opened his mouth, and beginning with this scripture he told him the good news of Jesus. NIV 35 Then Philip began with that very passage of Scripture and told him the good news about Jesus. RSV 36 And as they went along the road they came to some water, and the eunuch said, "See, here is water! What is to prevent my being baptized?" NIV 36 As they traveled along the road, they came to some water and the eunuch said, "Look, here is water. Why shouldn't I be baptized?" RSV 37 * [No text] RSV 38 And he commanded the chariot to stop, and they both went down into the water, Philip and the eunuch, and he baptized him. NIV 38 And he gave orders to stop the chariot. Then both Philip and the eunuch went down into the water and Philip baptized him. RSV 39 And when they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord caught up Philip; and the eunuch saw him no more, and went on his way rejoicing. NIV 39 When they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord suddenly took Philip away, and the eunuch did not see him again, but went on his way rejoicing. RSV 40 But Philip was found at Azo'tus, and passing on he preached the gospel to all the towns till he came to Caesare'a. NIV 40 Philip, however, appeared at Azotus and traveled about, preaching the gospel in all the towns until he reached Caesarea.
