Amos 5

RHE 1 Hear ye this word, which I take up concerning you for a lamentation. The house of Israel is fallen, and it shall rise no more. NIV 1 Hear this word, O house of Israel, this lament I take up concerning you: RHE 2 The virgin of Israel is cast down upon her land, there is none to raise her up. NIV 2 "Fallen is Virgin Israel, never to rise again, deserted in her own land, with no one to lift her up." RHE 3 For thus saith the Lord God: The city, out of which came forth a thousand, there shall be left in it a hundred: and out of which there came a hundred, there shall be left in it ten, in the house of Israel. NIV 3 This is what the Sovereign LORD says: "The city that marches out a thousand strong for Israel will have only a hundred left; the town that marches out a hundred strong will have only ten left." RHE 4 For thus saith the Lord to the house of Israel: Seek ye me, and you shall live. NIV 4 This is what the LORD says to the house of Israel: "Seek me and live; RHE 5 But seek not Bethel, and go not into Galgal, neither shall you pass over to Bersabee: for Galgal shall go into captivity, and Bethel shall be unprofitable. NIV 5 do not seek Bethel, do not go to Gilgal, do not journey to Beersheba. For Gilgal will surely go into exile, and Bethel will be reduced to nothing." RHE 6 Seek ye the Lord, and live: lest the house of Joseph be burnt with fire, and it shall devour, and there shall be none to quench Bethel. NIV 6 Seek the LORD and live, or he will sweep through the house of Joseph like a fire; it will devour, and Bethel will have no one to quench it. RHE 7 You that turn judgment into wormwood, and forsake justice in the land, NIV 7 You who turn justice into bitterness and cast righteousness to the ground RHE 8 Seek him that maketh Arcturus, and Orion, and that turneth darkness into morning, and that changeth day into night: that calleth the waters of the sea, and poureth them out upon the face of the earth: The Lord is his name. NIV 8 (he who made the Pleiades and Orion, who turns blackness into dawn and darkens day into night, who calls for the waters of the sea and pours them out over the face of the land-- the LORD is his name-- RHE 9 He that with a smile bringeth destruction upon the strong, and waste upon the mighty. NIV 9 he flashes destruction on the stronghold and brings the fortified city to ruin), RHE 10 They have hated him that rebuketh in the gate: and have abhorred him that speaketh perfectly. NIV 10 you hate the one who reproves in court and despise him who tells the truth. RHE 11 Therefore because you robbed the poor, and took the choice prey from him: you shall build houses with square stone, and shall not dwell in them: you shall plant most delightful vineyards, and shall not drink the wine of them. NIV 11 You trample on the poor and force him to give you grain. Therefore, though you have built stone mansions, you will not live in them; though you have planted lush vineyards, you will not drink their wine. RHE 12 Because I know your manifold crimes, and your grievous sins: enemies of the just, taking bribes, and oppressing the poor in the gate. NIV 12 For I know how many are your offenses and how great your sins. You oppress the righteous and take bribes and you deprive the poor of justice in the courts. RHE 13 Therefore the prudent shall keep silence at that time, for it is an evil time. NIV 13 Therefore the prudent man keeps quiet in such times, for the times are evil. RHE 14 Seek ye good, and not evil, that you may live: and the Lord the God of hosts will be with you, as you have said. NIV 14 Seek good, not evil, that you may live. Then the LORD God Almighty will be with you, just as you say he is. RHE 15 Hate evil, and love good, and establish judgment in the gate: it may be the Lord the God of hosts may have mercy on the remnant of Joseph. NIV 15 Hate evil, love good; maintain justice in the courts. Perhaps the LORD God Almighty will have mercy on the remnant of Joseph. RHE 16 Therefore thus saith the Lord the God of hosts the sovereign Lord: In every street there shall be wailing: and in all places that are without, they shall say: Alas, alas! and they shall call the husbandman to mourning, and such as are skilful in lamentation to lament. NIV 16 Therefore this is what the Lord, the LORD God Almighty, says: "There will be wailing in all the streets and cries of anguish in every public square. The farmers will be summoned to weep and the mourners to wail. RHE 17 And in all vineyards there shall be wailing: because I will pass through in the midst of thee, saith the Lord. NIV 17 There will be wailing in all the vineyards, for I will pass through your midst," says the LORD. RHE 18 Woe to them that desire the day of the Lord: to what end is it for you? the day of the Lord is darkness, and not light. NIV 18 Woe to you who long for the day of the LORD! Why do you long for the day of the LORD? That day will be darkness, not light. RHE 19 As if a man should flee from the face of a lion, and a bear should meet him: or enter into the house, and lean with his hand upon the wall, and a serpent should bite him. NIV 19 It will be as though a man fled from a lion only to meet a bear, as though he entered his house and rested his hand on the wall only to have a snake bite him. RHE 20 Shall not the day of the Lord be darkness, and not light: and obscurity, and no brightness in it? NIV 20 Will not the day of the LORD be darkness, not light-- pitch-dark, without a ray of brightness? RHE 21 I hate, and have rejected your festivities: and I will not receive the odour of your assemblies. NIV 21 "I hate, I despise your religious feasts; I cannot stand your assemblies. RHE 22 And if you offer me holocausts, and your gifts, I will not receive them: neither will I regard the vows of your fat beasts. NIV 22 Even though you bring me burnt offerings and grain offerings, I will not accept them. Though you bring choice fellowship offerings, I will have no regard for them. RHE 23 Take away from me the tumult of thy songs: and I will not hear the canticles of thy harp. NIV 23 Away with the noise of your songs! I will not listen to the music of your harps. RHE 24 But judgment shall be revealed as water, and justice as a mighty torrent. NIV 24 But let justice roll on like a river, righteousness like a never-failing stream! RHE 25 Did you offer victims and sacrifices to me in the desert for forty years, O house of Israel? NIV 25 "Did you bring me sacrifices and offerings forty years in the desert, O house of Israel? RHE 26 you carried a tabernacle for your Moloch, and the image of your idols, the star of your god, which you made to yourselves. NIV 26 You have lifted up the shrine of your king, the pedestal of your idols, the star of your god-- which you made for yourselves. RHE 27 And I will cause you to go into captivity beyond Damascus, saith the Lord, the God of hosts is his name. NIV 27 Therefore I will send you into exile beyond Damascus," says the LORD, whose name is God Almighty.
