Deuteronomy 2

LEB 1 "[Then] we turned and set out [toward] the wilderness in the direction of the {Red Sea}, as Yahweh told me, and we went around Mount Seir [for] many days. NIV 1 Then we turned back and set out toward the desert along the route to the Red Sea, as the LORD had directed me. For a long time we made our way around the hill country of Seir. LEB 2 Yahweh spoke to me, {saying}, NIV 2 Then the LORD said to me, LEB 3 '[Long] enough you have been skirting this mountain; turn yourselves north, NIV 3 "You have made your way around this hill country long enough; now turn north. LEB 4 and instruct the people, {saying}, "You [are] about to cross [through] the territory of your brothers, the descendants of Esau, who are living in Seir; they will be afraid of you, and [so] be very careful. NIV 4 Give the people these orders: 'You are about to pass through the territory of your brothers the descendants of Esau, who live in Seir. They will be afraid of you, but be very careful. LEB 5 Do not get involved in battle with them, for I will not give you any of their land, not even {a foot's breadth} [of it]; since I have given Mount Seir [as] a possession for Esau. NIV 5 Do not provoke them to war, for I will not give you any of their land, not even enough to put your foot on. I have given Esau the hill country of Seir as his own. LEB 6 You shall buy food from them so that you may eat; and also you shall purchase water from them with money so that you may drink. NIV 6 You are to pay them in silver for the food you eat and the water you drink.' " LEB 7 The fact of the matter is, Yahweh your God has blessed you in {all the work you have done}; he knows {your travels} [with respect to] this great wilderness; forty years Yahweh your God [has been] with you; you have not lacked a thing." ' NIV 7 The LORD your God has blessed you in all the work of your hands. He has watched over your journey through this vast desert. These forty years the LORD your God has been with you, and you have not lacked anything. LEB 8 And so we passed by our brothers, the descendants of Esau, who live in Seir, past the road of the Arabah, from Elath and Ezion Geber, and we turned and traveled along the route of the desert of Moab. NIV 8 So we went on past our brothers the descendants of Esau, who live in Seir. We turned from the Arabah road, which comes up from Elath and Ezion Geber, and traveled along the desert road of Moab. LEB 9 And Yahweh said to me, 'You shall not attack Moab, and you shall not engage in war with them, for I will not give you any of his land [as] a possession; I have given Ar to the descendants of Lot [as] a possession.' NIV 9 Then the LORD said to me, "Do not harass the Moabites or provoke them to war, for I will not give you any part of their land. I have given Ar to the descendants of Lot as a possession." LEB 10 (The Emim previously lived in it, a people large, numerous, and tall, like the Anakites. NIV 10 (The Emites used to live there--a people strong and numerous, and as tall as the Anakites. LEB 11 They were reckoned also [as] Rephaim as the Anakites [were]; but the Moabites called them Emim. NIV 11 Like the Anakites, they too were considered Rephaites, but the Moabites called them Emites. LEB 12 The Horites previously lived in Seir, but the descendants of Esau dispossessed them and destroyed them {from among themselves}, as Israel did with respect to the land of their possession that Yahweh gave to them.) NIV 12 Horites used to live in Seir, but the descendants of Esau drove them out. They destroyed the Horites from before them and settled in their place, just as Israel did in the land the LORD gave them as their possession.) LEB 13 So [now] arise and cross over the wadi of Zered yourselves; and [so] we crossed the wadi of Zered. NIV 13 And the LORD said, "Now get up and cross the Zered Valley." So we crossed the valley. LEB 14 Now the {length of time} that we had traveled from Kadesh Barnea until [the time when] we crossed the wadi of Zered [was] thirty-eight years, until the perishing of all of that generation; [that is], the men of war from the midst of the camp as Yahweh had sworn to them. NIV 14 Thirty-eight years passed from the time we left Kadesh Barnea until we crossed the Zered Valley. By then, that entire generation of fighting men had perished from the camp, as the LORD had sworn to them. LEB 15 The hand of Yahweh was against them to root them out from the midst of the camp until they perished completely. NIV 15 The LORD's hand was against them until he had completely eliminated them from the camp. LEB 16 "{And then} when all the men of war {had died} from among the people, NIV 16 Now when the last of these fighting men among the people had died, LEB 17 Yahweh spoke to me, {saying}, NIV 17 the LORD said to me, LEB 18 'You [are] about to cross over the boundary of Moab {today} at Ar. NIV 18 "Today you are to pass by the region of Moab at Ar. LEB 19 When you approach {the border of} the {Ammonites}, you shall not harass them, and you shall not get involved in battle with them, for I have not given the land of {the Ammonites} to you as a possession; because I have given it to the descendants of Lot [as] a possession. NIV 19 When you come to the Ammonites, do not harass them or provoke them to war, for I will not give you possession of any land belonging to the Ammonites. I have given it as a possession to the descendants of Lot." LEB 20 (It is also considered the land of Rephaim; Rephaim lived in it {previously}, and the Ammonites called them Zamzummim, NIV 20 (That too was considered a land of the Rephaites, who used to live there; but the Ammonites called them Zamzummites. LEB 21 a people great and numerous and as tall as the Anakites; Yahweh destroyed them from before them, and they dispossessed them and settled in place of them, NIV 21 They were a people strong and numerous, and as tall as the Anakites. The LORD destroyed them from before the Ammonites, who drove them out and settled in their place. LEB 22 just as he did for the descendants of Esau, who live in Seir, when he destroyed the Horites from {before them} and dispossessed them, and [then] they settled in their place up to this day. NIV 22 The LORD had done the same for the descendants of Esau, who lived in Seir, when he destroyed the Horites from before them. They drove them out and have lived in their place to this day. LEB 23 And [also] the Avvites, who lived in villages as far as Gaza, [and the] Caphtorim, who came out from Caphtor, destroyed them and [then] settled in their place. NIV 23 And as for the Avvites who lived in villages as far as Gaza, the Caphtorites coming out from Caphtor destroyed them and settled in their place.) LEB 24 Arise, set out and cross [over] the wadi of Arnon. Look! I have given Sihon the Amorite, the king of Heshbon, and his land into your hand; begin to take possession of [it], and engage with him in battle. NIV 24 "Set out now and cross the Arnon Gorge. See, I have given into your hand Sihon the Amorite, king of Heshbon, and his country. Begin to take possession of it and engage him in battle. LEB 25 This day I will begin to place {the dread of you} and the fear of you {before} the peoples under all the heavens. [They] will hear {the report about you}, and [so] they will shake and tremble {because of you}.' NIV 25 This very day I will begin to put the terror and fear of you on all the nations under heaven. They will hear reports of you and will tremble and be in anguish because of you." LEB 26 "So I sent messengers from the wilderness of Kedemoth to Sihon king of Heshbon; [I sent] terms of peace, {saying}, NIV 26 From the desert of Kedemoth I sent messengers to Sihon king of Heshbon offering peace and saying, LEB 27 'Let me cross through your land [and] {only along the road} I will go; I will not turn aside to the right or [to the] left. NIV 27 "Let us pass through your country. We will stay on the main road; we will not turn aside to the right or to the left. LEB 28 Food for money you shall sell me, so that I may eat, and water for money you will give to me, so that I may drink; just let me cross on foot. NIV 28 Sell us food to eat and water to drink for their price in silver. Only let us pass through on foot-- LEB 29 [Just as] the descendants of Esau did for me, who live in Seir, and the Moabites, who live in Ar, until I cross the Jordan into the land that Yahweh our God is giving to us.' NIV 29 as the descendants of Esau, who live in Seir, and the Moabites, who live in Ar, did for us--until we cross the Jordan into the land the LORD our God is giving us." LEB 30 But Sihon king of Heshbon was not willing to let us cross through his [territory] because Yahweh your God hardened his spirit and {made him obstinate} {in order to give him} into your hand, {just as he has now done}. NIV 30 But Sihon king of Heshbon refused to let us pass through. For the LORD your God had made his spirit stubborn and his heart obstinate in order to give him into your hands, as he has now done. LEB 31 Yahweh said to me, 'Look! I have begun to give {over to you} Sihon and his land; begin {to take possession of his land}.' NIV 31 The LORD said to me, "See, I have begun to deliver Sihon and his country over to you. Now begin to conquer and possess his land." LEB 32 Then Sihon and all his people came out to meet us for battle at Jahaz. NIV 32 When Sihon and all his army came out to meet us in battle at Jahaz, LEB 33 And so Yahweh our God gave him over {to us}, and we struck him down, and his sons and all of his people. NIV 33 the LORD our God delivered him over to us and we struck him down, together with his sons and his whole army. LEB 34 So we captured all of his cities at that time, and we destroyed each town [of] males and the women and the children; we did not leave behind a survivor. NIV 34 At that time we took all his towns and completely destroyed them--men, women and children. We left no survivors. LEB 35 We took only the livestock as spoil for ourselves, and [also] the booty of the cities that we had captured. NIV 35 But the livestock and the plunder from the towns we had captured we carried off for ourselves. LEB 36 From Aroer, which [is] on the edge of the wadi of Arnon and the city that [was] in the wadi on up to Gilead, [there] was not a city that was inaccessible to us; Yahweh our God gave {everything} {to us}. NIV 36 From Aroer on the rim of the Arnon Gorge, and from the town in the gorge, even as far as Gilead, not one town was too strong for us. The LORD our God gave us all of them. LEB 37 Only the land of {the Ammonites} you did not approach, [all along] the whole upper region of the Jabbok {River} and the towns of the hill country, [according to all] that Yahweh our God had instructed. NIV 37 But in accordance with the command of the LORD our God, you did not encroach on any of the land of the Ammonites, neither the land along the course of the Jabbok nor that around the towns in the hills.
