Deuteronomy 2

NIRV 1 We turned back and started out toward the desert. We went along the road that leads to the Red Sea. That's how the LORD had directed me. For a long time we made our way around the hill country of Seir. NIV 1 Then we turned back and set out toward the desert along the route to the Red Sea, as the LORD had directed me. For a long time we made our way around the hill country of Seir. NIRV 2 Then the LORD spoke to me. He said, NIV 2 Then the LORD said to me, NIRV 3 "You have made your way around this hill country long enough. So now turn north. NIV 3 "You have made your way around this hill country long enough; now turn north. NIRV 4 "Here are the orders I want you to give the people. Tell them, 'You are about to pass through the territory of your relatives. They are from the family line of Esau. They live in Seir. They will be afraid of you. But be very careful. NIV 4 Give the people these orders: 'You are about to pass through the territory of your brothers the descendants of Esau, who live in Seir. They will be afraid of you, but be very careful. NIRV 5 Do not make them angry. If you do, they will go to war against you. I will not give you any of their land. You will not have even enough to put your foot on. I have given Esau the hill country of Seir as his own. NIV 5 Do not provoke them to war, for I will not give you any of their land, not even enough to put your foot on. I have given Esau the hill country of Seir as his own. NIRV 6 Pay them with silver for the food you eat and the water you drink.' " NIV 6 You are to pay them in silver for the food you eat and the water you drink.' " NIRV 7 The LORD your God has blessed you in everything your hands have done. He watched over you when you traveled through that huge desert. For these 40 years the LORD your God has been with you. So you have had everything you need. NIV 7 The LORD your God has blessed you in all the work of your hands. He has watched over your journey through this vast desert. These forty years the LORD your God has been with you, and you have not lacked anything. NIRV 8 We went on past our relatives. They are from the family line of Esau. They live in Seir. We turned away from the Arabah Valley road. It comes up from Elath and Ezion Geber. We traveled along the desert road of Moab. NIV 8 So we went on past our brothers the descendants of Esau, who live in Seir. We turned from the Arabah road, which comes up from Elath and Ezion Geber, and traveled along the desert road of Moab. NIRV 9 Then the LORD said to me, "Do not attack the Moabites. Do not even make them angry. If you do, they will go to war against you. I will not give you any part of their land. I have given Moab to the people in the family line of Lot. I have given it to them as their own." NIV 9 Then the LORD said to me, "Do not harass the Moabites or provoke them to war, for I will not give you any part of their land. I have given Ar to the descendants of Lot as a possession." NIRV 10 The Emites used to live there. They were strong people. There were large numbers of them. They were as tall as the Anakites. NIV 10 (The Emites used to live there--a people strong and numerous, and as tall as the Anakites. NIRV 11 Like the Anakites, they too were thought of as Rephaites. But the Moabites called them Emites. NIV 11 Like the Anakites, they too were considered Rephaites, but the Moabites called them Emites. NIRV 12 The Horites used to live in Seir. But the people of Esau drove them out. They destroyed the Horites to make room for themselves. Then they settled in their territory. They did just as Israel has done in the land the LORD gave them as their own. NIV 12 Horites used to live in Seir, but the descendants of Esau drove them out. They destroyed the Horites from before them and settled in their place, just as Israel did in the land the LORD gave them as their possession.) NIRV 13 The LORD said, "Now get up. Go across the Zered Valley." So we went across it. NIV 13 And the LORD said, "Now get up and cross the Zered Valley." So we crossed the valley. NIRV 14 Between the time we left Kadesh Barnea and the time we went across the Zered Valley, 38 years passed. By then, all of the fighting men who had been in our camp from the beginning had died. The LORD had warned them with an oath that it would happen. NIV 14 Thirty-eight years passed from the time we left Kadesh Barnea until we crossed the Zered Valley. By then, that entire generation of fighting men had perished from the camp, as the LORD had sworn to them. NIRV 15 He used his power against them until he had gotten rid of all of them. Not one was left in the camp. NIV 15 The LORD's hand was against them until he had completely eliminated them from the camp. NIRV 16 Finally, the last of the fighting men among the people died. NIV 16 Now when the last of these fighting men among the people had died, NIRV 17 Then the LORD spoke to me. He said, NIV 17 the LORD said to me, NIRV 18 "Today you must pass near the border of Moab. Moab is also called Ar. NIV 18 "Today you are to pass by the region of Moab at Ar. NIRV 19 "When you come to the Ammonites, do not attack them. Do not make them angry. If you do, they will go to war against you. I will not give you any of their land as your own. I have given it to the people in the family line of Lot. I have given it to them as their own." NIV 19 When you come to the Ammonites, do not harass them or provoke them to war, for I will not give you possession of any land belonging to the Ammonites. I have given it as a possession to the descendants of Lot." NIRV 20 That land was also thought of as a land of the Rephaites. They used to live there. But the Ammonites called them Zamzummites. NIV 20 (That too was considered a land of the Rephaites, who used to live there; but the Ammonites called them Zamzummites. NIRV 21 The Rephaites were strong people. There were large numbers of them. They were as tall as the Anakites. The LORD destroyed the Rephaites to make room for the Ammonites. So the Ammonites drove them out. Then they settled in the territory of the Rephaites. NIV 21 They were a people strong and numerous, and as tall as the Anakites. The LORD destroyed them from before the Ammonites, who drove them out and settled in their place. NIRV 22 The LORD had done the same thing for the people of Esau. They lived in Seir. He destroyed the Horites to make room for them. They drove the Horites out. So the people of Esau have lived in Seir in the territory of the Horites to this very day. NIV 22 The LORD had done the same for the descendants of Esau, who lived in Seir, when he destroyed the Horites from before them. They drove them out and have lived in their place to this day. NIRV 23 The Avvites lived in villages as far away as Gaza. But people came from Crete. They destroyed the Avvites. Then they settled in the territory of the Avvites. NIV 23 And as for the Avvites who lived in villages as far as Gaza, the Caphtorites coming out from Caphtor destroyed them and settled in their place.) NIRV 24 The LORD said, "Start out and go across the valley of the Arnon River. I have handed Sihon over to you. He is the Amorite king of Heshbon. I have also given you his country. Begin to take it as your own. Go to war against him. NIV 24 "Set out now and cross the Arnon Gorge. See, I have given into your hand Sihon the Amorite, king of Heshbon, and his country. Begin to take possession of it and engage him in battle. NIRV 25 "This very day I will bring fear and terror on all of the nations because of you. They will hear about you. They will tremble with fear. Pain and suffering will take hold of them because of you." NIV 25 This very day I will begin to put the terror and fear of you on all the nations under heaven. They will hear reports of you and will tremble and be in anguish because of you." NIRV 26 I sent messengers from the Desert of Kedemoth. I told them to go to Sihon, the king of Heshbon. They offered him peace. They said, NIV 26 From the desert of Kedemoth I sent messengers to Sihon king of Heshbon offering peace and saying, NIRV 27 "Let us pass through your country. We'll stay on the main road. We won't turn off it to one side or the other. NIV 27 "Let us pass through your country. We will stay on the main road; we will not turn aside to the right or to the left. NIRV 28 We'll pay you the right amount of silver for food to eat and water to drink. Just let us walk through your country. NIV 28 Sell us food to eat and water to drink for their price in silver. Only let us pass through on foot-- NIRV 29 The people of Esau, who live in Seir, allowed us to do that. The people of Moab, who live in Ar, also allowed us to do it. So let us walk through until we go across the Jordan River. Then we'll be able to go into the land the LORD our God is giving us." NIV 29 as the descendants of Esau, who live in Seir, and the Moabites, who live in Ar, did for us--until we cross the Jordan into the land the LORD our God is giving us." NIRV 30 But Sihon, the king of Heshbon, refused to let us walk through. The LORD your God had made his heart and spirit stubborn. The LORD wanted to hand him over to you. And that's exactly what he has done. NIV 30 But Sihon king of Heshbon refused to let us pass through. For the LORD your God had made his spirit stubborn and his heart obstinate in order to give him into your hands, as he has now done. NIRV 31 The LORD said to me, "I have begun to hand Sihon and his country over to you. So begin the battle to take his land as your own." NIV 31 The LORD said to me, "See, I have begun to deliver Sihon and his country over to you. Now begin to conquer and possess his land." NIRV 32 Sihon and his whole army came out to fight against us at Jahaz. NIV 32 When Sihon and all his army came out to meet us in battle at Jahaz, NIRV 33 But the LORD our God handed him over to us. We struck him down together with his sons and his whole army. NIV 33 the LORD our God delivered him over to us and we struck him down, together with his sons and his whole army. NIRV 34 At that time we took all of his towns. We completely destroyed them. We killed all of the men, women and children. We didn't leave any of them alive. NIV 34 At that time we took all his towns and completely destroyed them--men, women and children. We left no survivors. NIRV 35 But we took for ourselves the livestock and everything else from the towns we had captured. NIV 35 But the livestock and the plunder from the towns we had captured we carried off for ourselves. NIRV 36 Not a single town was too strong for us. That includes all of the towns from Aroer on the rim of the Arnon River valley all the way to Gilead. It also includes the town in the valley. The LORD our God gave us all of them. NIV 36 From Aroer on the rim of the Arnon Gorge, and from the town in the gorge, even as far as Gilead, not one town was too strong for us. The LORD our God gave us all of them. NIRV 37 And you obeyed the LORD's command. You didn't go near any part of the land of the Ammonites. That includes the land along the Jabbok River. It also includes the land around the towns that are in the hills. NIV 37 But in accordance with the command of the LORD our God, you did not encroach on any of the land of the Ammonites, neither the land along the course of the Jabbok nor that around the towns in the hills.
