Deuteronomy 28

RSV 1 "And if you obey the voice of the LORD your God, being careful to do all his commandments which I command you this day, the LORD your God will set you high above all the nations of the earth. NIV 1 If you fully obey the LORD your God and carefully follow all his commands I give you today, the LORD your God will set you high above all the nations on earth. RSV 2 And all these blessings shall come upon you and overtake you, if you obey the voice of the LORD your God. NIV 2 All these blessings will come upon you and accompany you if you obey the LORD your God: RSV 3 Blessed shall you be in the city, and blessed shall you be in the field. NIV 3 You will be blessed in the city and blessed in the country. RSV 4 Blessed shall be the fruit of your body, and the fruit of your ground, and the fruit of your beasts, the increase of your cattle, and the young of your flock. NIV 4 The fruit of your womb will be blessed, and the crops of your land and the young of your livestock--the calves of your herds and the lambs of your flocks. RSV 5 Blessed shall be your basket and your kneading-trough. NIV 5 Your basket and your kneading trough will be blessed. RSV 6 Blessed shall you be when you come in, and blessed shall you be when you go out. NIV 6 You will be blessed when you come in and blessed when you go out. RSV 7 "The LORD will cause your enemies who rise against you to be defeated before you; they shall come out against you one way, and flee before you seven ways. NIV 7 The LORD will grant that the enemies who rise up against you will be defeated before you. They will come at you from one direction but flee from you in seven. RSV 8 The LORD will command the blessing upon you in your barns, and in all that you undertake; and he will bless you in the land which the LORD your God gives you. NIV 8 The LORD will send a blessing on your barns and on everything you put your hand to. The LORD your God will bless you in the land he is giving you. RSV 9 The LORD will establish you as a people holy to himself, as he has sworn to you, if you keep the commandments of the LORD your God, and walk in his ways. NIV 9 The LORD will establish you as his holy people, as he promised you on oath, if you keep the commands of the LORD your God and walk in his ways. RSV 10 And all the peoples of the earth shall see that you are called by the name of the LORD; and they shall be afraid of you. NIV 10 Then all the peoples on earth will see that you are called by the name of the LORD, and they will fear you. RSV 11 And the LORD will make you abound in prosperity, in the fruit of your body, and in the fruit of your cattle, and in the fruit of your ground, within the land which the LORD swore to your fathers to give you. NIV 11 The LORD will grant you abundant prosperity--in the fruit of your womb, the young of your livestock and the crops of your ground--in the land he swore to your forefathers to give you. RSV 12 The LORD will open to you his good treasury the heavens, to give the rain of your land in its season and to bless all the work of your hands; and you shall lend to many nations, but you shall not borrow. NIV 12 The LORD will open the heavens, the storehouse of his bounty, to send rain on your land in season and to bless all the work of your hands. You will lend to many nations but will borrow from none. RSV 13 And the LORD will make you the head, and not the tail; and you shall tend upward only, and not downward; if you obey the commandments of the LORD your God, which I command you this day, being careful to do them, NIV 13 The LORD will make you the head, not the tail. If you pay attention to the commands of the LORD your God that I give you this day and carefully follow them, you will always be at the top, never at the bottom. RSV 14 and if you do not turn aside from any of the words which I command you this day, to the right hand or to the left, to go after other gods to serve them. NIV 14 Do not turn aside from any of the commands I give you today, to the right or to the left, following other gods and serving them. RSV 15 "But if you will not obey the voice of the LORD your God or be careful to do all his commandments and his statutes which I command you this day, then all these curses shall come upon you and overtake you. NIV 15 However, if you do not obey the LORD your God and do not carefully follow all his commands and decrees I am giving you today, all these curses will come upon you and overtake you: RSV 16 Cursed shall you be in the city, and cursed shall you be in the field. NIV 16 You will be cursed in the city and cursed in the country. RSV 17 Cursed shall be your basket and your kneading-trough. NIV 17 Your basket and your kneading trough will be cursed. RSV 18 Cursed shall be the fruit of your body, and the fruit of your ground, the increase of your cattle, and the young of your flock. NIV 18 The fruit of your womb will be cursed, and the crops of your land, and the calves of your herds and the lambs of your flocks. RSV 19 Cursed shall you be when you come in, and cursed shall you be when you go out. NIV 19 You will be cursed when you come in and cursed when you go out. RSV 20 "The LORD will send upon you curses, confusion, and frustration, in all that you undertake to do, until you are destroyed and perish quickly, on account of the evil of your doings, because you have forsaken me. NIV 20 The LORD will send on you curses, confusion and rebuke in everything you put your hand to, until you are destroyed and come to sudden ruin because of the evil you have done in forsaking him. RSV 21 The LORD will make the pestilence cleave to you until he has consumed you off the land which you are entering to take possession of it. NIV 21 The LORD will plague you with diseases until he has destroyed you from the land you are entering to possess. RSV 22 The LORD will smite you with consumption, and with fever, inflammation, and fiery heat, and with drought, and with blasting, and with mildew; they shall pursue you until you perish. NIV 22 The LORD will strike you with wasting disease, with fever and inflammation, with scorching heat and drought, with blight and mildew, which will plague you until you perish. RSV 23 And the heavens over your head shall be brass, and the earth under you shall be iron. NIV 23 The sky over your head will be bronze, the ground beneath you iron. RSV 24 The LORD will make the rain of your land powder and dust; from heaven it shall come down upon you until you are destroyed. NIV 24 The LORD will turn the rain of your country into dust and powder; it will come down from the skies until you are destroyed. RSV 25 "The LORD will cause you to be defeated before your enemies; you shall go out one way against them, and flee seven ways before them; and you shall be a horror to all the kingdoms of the earth. NIV 25 The LORD will cause you to be defeated before your enemies. You will come at them from one direction but flee from them in seven, and you will become a thing of horror to all the kingdoms on earth. RSV 26 And your dead body shall be food for all birds of the air, and for the beasts of the earth; and there shall be no one to frighten them away. NIV 26 Your carcasses will be food for all the birds of the air and the beasts of the earth, and there will be no one to frighten them away. RSV 27 The LORD will smite you with the boils of Egypt, and with the ulcers and the scurvy and the itch, of which you cannot be healed. NIV 27 The LORD will afflict you with the boils of Egypt and with tumors, festering sores and the itch, from which you cannot be cured. RSV 28 The LORD will smite you with madness and blindness and confusion of mind; NIV 28 The LORD will afflict you with madness, blindness and confusion of mind. RSV 29 and you shall grope at noonday, as the blind grope in darkness, and you shall not prosper in your ways; and you shall be only oppressed and robbed continually, and there shall be no one to help you. NIV 29 At midday you will grope about like a blind man in the dark. You will be unsuccessful in everything you do; day after day you will be oppressed and robbed, with no one to rescue you. RSV 30 You shall betroth a wife, and another man shall lie with her; you shall build a house, and you shall not dwell in it; you shall plant a vineyard, and you shall not use the fruit of it. NIV 30 You will be pledged to be married to a woman, but another will take her and ravish her. You will build a house, but you will not live in it. You will plant a vineyard, but you will not even begin to enjoy its fruit. RSV 31 Your ox shall be slain before your eyes, and you shall not eat of it; your ass shall be violently taken away before your face, and shall not be restored to you; your sheep shall be given to your enemies, and there shall be no one to help you. NIV 31 Your ox will be slaughtered before your eyes, but you will eat none of it. Your donkey will be forcibly taken from you and will not be returned. Your sheep will be given to your enemies, and no one will rescue them. RSV 32 Your sons and your daughters shall be given to another people, while your eyes look on and fail with longing for them all the day; and it shall not be in the power of your hand to prevent it. NIV 32 Your sons and daughters will be given to another nation, and you will wear out your eyes watching for them day after day, powerless to lift a hand. RSV 33 A nation which you have not known shall eat up the fruit of your ground and of all your labors; and you shall be only oppressed and crushed continually; NIV 33 A people that you do not know will eat what your land and labor produce, and you will have nothing but cruel oppression all your days. RSV 34 so that you shall be driven mad by the sight which your eyes shall see. NIV 34 The sights you see will drive you mad. RSV 35 The LORD will smite you on the knees and on the legs with grievous boils of which you cannot be healed, from the sole of your foot to the crown of your head. NIV 35 The LORD will afflict your knees and legs with painful boils that cannot be cured, spreading from the soles of your feet to the top of your head. RSV 36 "The LORD will bring you, and your king whom you set over you, to a nation that neither you nor your fathers have known; and there you shall serve other gods, of wood and stone. NIV 36 The LORD will drive you and the king you set over you to a nation unknown to you or your fathers. There you will worship other gods, gods of wood and stone. RSV 37 And you shall become a horror, a proverb, and a byword, among all the peoples where the LORD will lead you away. NIV 37 You will become a thing of horror and an object of scorn and ridicule to all the nations where the LORD will drive you. RSV 38 You shall carry much seed into the field, and shall gather little in; for the locust shall consume it. NIV 38 You will sow much seed in the field but you will harvest little, because locusts will devour it. RSV 39 You shall plant vineyards and dress them, but you shall neither drink of the wine nor gather the grapes; for the worm shall eat them. NIV 39 You will plant vineyards and cultivate them but you will not drink the wine or gather the grapes, because worms will eat them. RSV 40 You shall have olive trees throughout all your territory, but you shall not anoint yourself with the oil; for your olives shall drop off. NIV 40 You will have olive trees throughout your country but you will not use the oil, because the olives will drop off. RSV 41 You shall beget sons and daughters, but they shall not be yours; for they shall go into captivity. NIV 41 You will have sons and daughters but you will not keep them, because they will go into captivity. RSV 42 All your trees and the fruit of your ground the locust shall possess. NIV 42 Swarms of locusts will take over all your trees and the crops of your land. RSV 43 The sojourner who is among you shall mount above you higher and higher; and you shall come down lower and lower. NIV 43 The alien who lives among you will rise above you higher and higher, but you will sink lower and lower. RSV 44 He shall lend to you, and you shall not lend to him; he shall be the head, and you shall be the tail. NIV 44 He will lend to you, but you will not lend to him. He will be the head, but you will be the tail. RSV 45 All these curses shall come upon you and pursue you and overtake you, till you are destroyed, because you did not obey the voice of the LORD your God, to keep his commandments and his statutes which he commanded you. NIV 45 All these curses will come upon you. They will pursue you and overtake you until you are destroyed, because you did not obey the LORD your God and observe the commands and decrees he gave you. RSV 46 They shall be upon you as a sign and a wonder, and upon your descendants for ever. NIV 46 They will be a sign and a wonder to you and your descendants forever. RSV 47 "Because you did not serve the LORD your God with joyfulness and gladness of heart, by reason of the abundance of all things, NIV 47 Because you did not serve the LORD your God joyfully and gladly in the time of prosperity, RSV 48 therefore you shall serve your enemies whom the LORD will send against you, in hunger and thirst, in nakedness, and in want of all things; and he will put a yoke of iron upon your neck, until he has destroyed you. NIV 48 therefore in hunger and thirst, in nakedness and dire poverty, you will serve the enemies the LORD sends against you. He will put an iron yoke on your neck until he has destroyed you. RSV 49 The LORD will bring a nation against you from afar, from the end of the earth, as swift as the eagle flies, a nation whose language you do not understand, NIV 49 The LORD will bring a nation against you from far away, from the ends of the earth, like an eagle swooping down, a nation whose language you will not understand, RSV 50 a nation of stern countenance, who shall not regard the person of the old or show favor to the young, NIV 50 a fierce-looking nation without respect for the old or pity for the young. RSV 51 and shall eat the offspring of your cattle and the fruit of your ground, until you are destroyed; who also shall not leave you grain, wine, or oil, the increase of your cattle or the young of your flock, until they have caused you to perish. NIV 51 They will devour the young of your livestock and the crops of your land until you are destroyed. They will leave you no grain, new wine or oil, nor any calves of your herds or lambs of your flocks until you are ruined. RSV 52 They shall besiege you in all your towns, until your high and fortified walls, in which you trusted, come down throughout all your land; and they shall besiege you in all your towns throughout all your land, which the LORD your God has given you. NIV 52 They will lay siege to all the cities throughout your land until the high fortified walls in which you trust fall down. They will besiege all the cities throughout the land the LORD your God is giving you. RSV 53 And you shall eat the offspring of your own body, the flesh of your sons and daughters, whom the LORD your God has given you, in the siege and in the distress with which your enemies shall distress you. NIV 53 Because of the suffering that your enemy will inflict on you during the siege, you will eat the fruit of the womb, the flesh of the sons and daughters the LORD your God has given you. RSV 54 The man who is the most tender and delicately bred among you will grudge food to his brother, to the wife of his bosom, and to the last of the children who remain to him; NIV 54 Even the most gentle and sensitive man among you will have no compassion on his own brother or the wife he loves or his surviving children, RSV 55 so that he will not give to any of them any of the flesh of his children whom he is eating, because he has nothing left him, in the siege and in the distress with which your enemy shall distress you in all your towns. NIV 55 and he will not give to one of them any of the flesh of his children that he is eating. It will be all he has left because of the suffering your enemy will inflict on you during the siege of all your cities. RSV 56 The most tender and delicately bred woman among you, who would not venture to set the sole of her foot upon the ground because she is so delicate and tender, will grudge to the husband of her bosom, to her son and to her daughter, NIV 56 The most gentle and sensitive woman among you--so sensitive and gentle that she would not venture to touch the ground with the sole of her foot--will begrudge the husband she loves and her own son or daughter RSV 57 her afterbirth that comes out from between her feet and her children whom she bears, because she will eat them secretly, for want of all things, in the siege and in the distress with which your enemy shall distress you in your towns. NIV 57 the afterbirth from her womb and the children she bears. For she intends to eat them secretly during the siege and in the distress that your enemy will inflict on you in your cities. RSV 58 "If you are not careful to do all the words of this law which are written in this book, that you may fear this glorious and awful name, the LORD your God, NIV 58 If you do not carefully follow all the words of this law, which are written in this book, and do not revere this glorious and awesome name--the LORD your God-- RSV 59 then the LORD will bring on you and your offspring extraordinary afflictions, afflictions severe and lasting, and sicknesses grievous and lasting. NIV 59 the LORD will send fearful plagues on you and your descendants, harsh and prolonged disasters, and severe and lingering illnesses. RSV 60 And he will bring upon you again all the diseases of Egypt, which you were afraid of; and they shall cleave to you. NIV 60 He will bring upon you all the diseases of Egypt that you dreaded, and they will cling to you. RSV 61 Every sickness also, and every affliction which is not recorded in the book of this law, the LORD will bring upon you, until you are destroyed. NIV 61 The LORD will also bring on you every kind of sickness and disaster not recorded in this Book of the Law, until you are destroyed. RSV 62 Whereas you were as the stars of heaven for multitude, you shall be left few in number; because you did not obey the voice of the LORD your God. NIV 62 You who were as numerous as the stars in the sky will be left but few in number, because you did not obey the LORD your God. RSV 63 And as the LORD took delight in doing you good and multiplying you, so the LORD will take delight in bringing ruin upon you and destroying you; and you shall be plucked off the land which you are entering to take possession of it. NIV 63 Just as it pleased the LORD to make you prosper and increase in number, so it will please him to ruin and destroy you. You will be uprooted from the land you are entering to possess. RSV 64 And the LORD will scatter you among all peoples, from one end of the earth to the other; and there you shall serve other gods, of wood and stone, which neither you nor your fathers have known. NIV 64 Then the LORD will scatter you among all nations, from one end of the earth to the other. There you will worship other gods--gods of wood and stone, which neither you nor your fathers have known. RSV 65 And among these nations you shall find no ease, and there shall be no rest for the sole of your foot; but the LORD will give you there a trembling heart, and failing eyes, and a languishing soul; NIV 65 Among those nations you will find no repose, no resting place for the sole of your foot. There the LORD will give you an anxious mind, eyes weary with longing, and a despairing heart. RSV 66 your life shall hang in doubt before you; night and day you shall be in dread, and have no assurance of your life. NIV 66 You will live in constant suspense, filled with dread both night and day, never sure of your life. RSV 67 In the morning you shall say, 'Would it were evening!' and at evening you shall say, 'Would it were morning!' because of the dread which your heart shall fear, and the sights which your eyes shall see. NIV 67 In the morning you will say, "If only it were evening!" and in the evening, "If only it were morning!"--because of the terror that will fill your hearts and the sights that your eyes will see. RSV 68 And the LORD will bring you back in ships to Egypt, a journey which I promised that you should never make again; and there you shall offer yourselves for sale to your enemies as male and female slaves, but no man will buy you." NIV 68 The LORD will send you back in ships to Egypt on a journey I said you should never make again.
