Deuteronomy 4

LEB 1 "Now, Israel, listen to the rules and to the regulations that I [am] teaching you to do, in order that you may live and you may go [in] and you may take possession of the land that Yahweh, the God of your ancestors, [is] giving to you. NIV 1 Hear now, O Israel, the decrees and laws I am about to teach you. Follow them so that you may live and may go in and take possession of the land that the LORD, the God of your fathers, is giving you. LEB 2 You must not add to the word that I [am] commanding you, and you shall not take away from it [in order] to keep the commands of Yahweh your God that I [am] commanding you [to observe]. NIV 2 Do not add to what I command you and do not subtract from it, but keep the commands of the LORD your God that I give you. LEB 3 Your eyes have seen what Yahweh did with [the case of] Baal Peor, for {each} man that followed after Baal Peor Yahweh your God destroyed from your midst. NIV 3 You saw with your own eyes what the LORD did at Baal Peor. The LORD your God destroyed from among you everyone who followed the Baal of Peor, LEB 4 But you, the [ones] holding fast to Yahweh your God, [are] all alive {today}. NIV 4 but all of you who held fast to the LORD your God are still alive today. LEB 5 See, I now teach you rules and regulations [just] as Yahweh my God has commanded me, to observe [them] [just] so in the midst of the land where you [are] going, to take possession of it. NIV 5 See, I have taught you decrees and laws as the LORD my God commanded me, so that you may follow them in the land you are entering to take possession of it. LEB 6 And {you must observe them diligently}, for that [is] your wisdom and your insight before the eyes of the people, who will hear all [of] these rules, and they will say, 'Surely this great nation [is] a wise and discerning people.' NIV 6 Observe them carefully, for this will show your wisdom and understanding to the nations, who will hear about all these decrees and say, "Surely this great nation is a wise and understanding people." LEB 7 For what great nation [has] for it a god near to it as Yahweh our God, whenever we call [upon] him? NIV 7 What other nation is so great as to have their gods near them the way the LORD our God is near us whenever we pray to him? LEB 8 And what [other] great nation has for it just rules and regulations just like {this whole} law that I [am] setting {before} you {today}? NIV 8 And what other nation is so great as to have such righteous decrees and laws as this body of laws I am setting before you today? LEB 9 "However, {take care} for yourself and watch your inner self closely, so that you do not forget the things that your eyes have seen, so that they do not slip from your mind all the days of your life; and you shall make them known to your children and to {your grandchildren}. NIV 9 Only be careful, and watch yourselves closely so that you do not forget the things your eyes have seen or let them slip from your heart as long as you live. Teach them to your children and to their children after them. LEB 10 [Remember] the day that you stood {before} Yahweh your God at Horeb {when Yahweh said to me}, 'Summon for me the people so that I can tell them my words, that they may learn to fear me all [of] the days they [are] alive on the earth and so [that] they may teach their children.' NIV 10 Remember the day you stood before the LORD your God at Horeb, when he said to me, "Assemble the people before me to hear my words so that they may learn to revere me as long as they live in the land and may teach them to their children." LEB 11 And [so] you came near, and you stood under the mountain, and the mountain [was] burning with fire up to the heart of the heaven, {dark with a very thick cloud}. NIV 11 You came near and stood at the foot of the mountain while it blazed with fire to the very heavens, with black clouds and deep darkness. LEB 12 And Yahweh spoke to you from the midst of the fire; {you heard} a sound of words, but {you did not see} a form--only a voice. NIV 12 Then the LORD spoke to you out of the fire. You heard the sound of words but saw no form; there was only a voice. LEB 13 And he declared to you his covenant, {the Ten Commandments}, which he charged you {to observe}, and he wrote them on [the] two tablets of stone. NIV 13 He declared to you his covenant, the Ten Commandments, which he commanded you to follow and then wrote them on two stone tablets. LEB 14 And Yahweh charged me at that time to teach you rules and regulations {for your observation of them} in the land that you [are] {about to cross into} to take possession of it. NIV 14 And the LORD directed me at that time to teach you the decrees and laws you are to follow in the land that you are crossing the Jordan to possess. LEB 15 "So {you must be very careful for yourselves}, because you did not see any form on the day Yahweh spoke to you at Horeb from the midst of the fire, NIV 15 You saw no form of any kind the day the LORD spoke to you at Horeb out of the fire. Therefore watch yourselves very carefully, LEB 16 so that you [do] not {ruin yourselves} and make for yourselves a divine image [in] a form of any image, a replica of male or female, NIV 16 so that you do not become corrupt and make for yourselves an idol, an image of any shape, whether formed like a man or a woman, LEB 17 a replica of any animal that [is] upon the earth, a replica of any winged bird that flies in the air, NIV 17 or like any animal on earth or any bird that flies in the air, LEB 18 a replica of any creeping thing on the ground, a replica of any fish that [is] in the water {below} the earth. NIV 18 or like any creature that moves along the ground or any fish in the waters below. LEB 19 {And do this so that you do not lift} your eyes [toward] heaven and {observe} the sun and the moon and the stars, all the host of the heaven, and be led astray and bow down to them and serve them, things that Yahweh your God has allotted to all [of] the peoples under all [of] the heaven. NIV 19 And when you look up to the sky and see the sun, the moon and the stars--all the heavenly array--do not be enticed into bowing down to them and worshiping things the LORD your God has apportioned to all the nations under heaven. LEB 20 But Yahweh has taken you and brought you out from the furnace of iron, from Egypt, to be a people of inheritance to him, {as it is this day}. NIV 20 But as for you, the LORD took you and brought you out of the iron-smelting furnace, out of Egypt, to be the people of his inheritance, as you now are. LEB 21 "And Yahweh was angry with me {because of you}, and he swore {that I would not cross the Jordan} and {that I would not go to the good land} that Yahweh your God is giving you as an inheritance. NIV 21 The LORD was angry with me because of you, and he solemnly swore that I would not cross the Jordan and enter the good land the LORD your God is giving you as your inheritance. LEB 22 For I [am] going to die in this land; I am not going to cross the Jordan, but you [are] going to cross, and you are going to take possession of this good land. NIV 22 I will die in this land; I will not cross the Jordan; but you are about to cross over and take possession of that good land. LEB 23 Watch [out] for yourselves so that you do not forget the covenant of Yahweh your God that he had {made} with you and make for yourselves a divine image [of] the form of anything that Yahweh your God {has forbidden}, NIV 23 Be careful not to forget the covenant of the LORD your God that he made with you; do not make for yourselves an idol in the form of anything the LORD your God has forbidden. LEB 24 for Yahweh your God [is] a devouring fire, a jealous God. NIV 24 For the LORD your God is a consuming fire, a jealous God. LEB 25 "When you have had children and {grandchildren} and you have grown old in the land and you act corruptly and you make a divine image [of] the form of anything and you do evil in the eyes of Yahweh your God, [thus] provoking him to anger, NIV 25 After you have had children and grandchildren and have lived in the land a long time--if you then become corrupt and make any kind of idol, doing evil in the eyes of the LORD your God and provoking him to anger, LEB 26 I call to witness against you today the heaven and the earth, that you will perish soon and completely from the land that you [are] crossing the Jordan into it to take possession of it; {you will not live long on it}, but you will be completely destroyed. NIV 26 I call heaven and earth as witnesses against you this day that you will quickly perish from the land that you are crossing the Jordan to possess. You will not live there long but will certainly be destroyed. LEB 27 And Yahweh will scatter you among the peoples, and you will be left {few in number} among the nations {to where Yahweh will lead you}. NIV 27 The LORD will scatter you among the peoples, and only a few of you will survive among the nations to which the LORD will drive you. LEB 28 And you will there serve gods {made by human hands}, [of] wood and stone, [gods] that cannot see and cannot hear and cannot eat and cannot smell. NIV 28 There you will worship man-made gods of wood and stone, which cannot see or hear or eat or smell. LEB 29 But from there you shall seek Yahweh your God and will find him, if you seek him with all your heart and with all your soul. NIV 29 But if from there you seek the LORD your God, you will find him if you look for him with all your heart and with all your soul. LEB 30 {In your distress} when all these things have found you in the {latter days}, then you will return to Yahweh your God, and you will listen to his voice. NIV 30 When you are in distress and all these things have happened to you, then in later days you will return to the LORD your God and obey him. LEB 31 For Yahweh your God is a compassionate God; he {will not abandon you}, and he will not destroy you, and he will not forget the covenant of your ancestors that he swore to them. NIV 31 For the LORD your God is a merciful God; he will not abandon or destroy you or forget the covenant with your forefathers, which he confirmed to them by oath. LEB 32 "Yes, ask, please, about former days that {preceded you} from the day that God created humankind on the earth; [ask even] from [one] end of the heaven up to the [other] end of heaven {whether anything ever happened} like this great thing or {whether anything like it was ever heard}. NIV 32 Ask now about the former days, long before your time, from the day God created man on the earth; ask from one end of the heavens to the other. Has anything so great as this ever happened, or has anything like it ever been heard of ? LEB 33 Has a people [ever] heard the voice of God speaking from the midst of the fire, [just] as you heard [it], and lived? NIV 33 Has any other people heard the voice of God speaking out of fire, as you have, and lived? LEB 34 Or has a god [ever] attempted to go to take for himself a nation from the midst of a nation, [using] trials and signs and wonders and war, with an outstretched arm and with great and awesome deeds, like all that Yahweh your God did for you in Egypt before your eyes? NIV 34 Has any god ever tried to take for himself one nation out of another nation, by testings, by miraculous signs and wonders, by war, by a mighty hand and an outstretched arm, or by great and awesome deeds, like all the things the LORD your God did for you in Egypt before your very eyes? LEB 35 You [yourselves] were shown [this wonder] in order [for you] to acknowledge that Yahweh [is] the God; there is no other [God] {besides him}. NIV 35 You were shown these things so that you might know that the LORD is God; besides him there is no other. LEB 36 From heaven he made you hear his voice to teach you, and on the earth he showed you his great fire, and you heard his words from the midst of the fire. NIV 36 From heaven he made you hear his voice to discipline you. On earth he showed you his great fire, and you heard his words from out of the fire. LEB 37 And because he loved your ancestors he chose their {descendants} after them. And he brought you forth from Egypt {with his own presence}, by his great strength, NIV 37 Because he loved your forefathers and chose their descendants after them, he brought you out of Egypt by his Presence and his great strength, LEB 38 to drive out nations greater and more numerous than you {from before you}, to bring you [and] to give to you their land [as] an inheritance, as [it is] this day. NIV 38 to drive out before you nations greater and stronger than you and to bring you into their land to give it to you for your inheritance, as it is today. LEB 39 So you shall acknowledge {today}, and {you must call to mind} that Yahweh [is] God in heaven above and on the earth beneath. There is no other [God]. NIV 39 Acknowledge and take to heart this day that the LORD is God in heaven above and on the earth below. There is no other. LEB 40 And you shall keep his rules and his commandments that I am commanding you {today}, [so] that {it may go well} for you and for your children after you, and so that {you may remain a long time} on the land that Yahweh your God [is] giving to you [during] all [of] those days." NIV 40 Keep his decrees and commands, which I am giving you today, so that it may go well with you and your children after you and that you may live long in the land the LORD your God gives you for all time. LEB 41 Then Moses set apart three cities {on the other side of the Jordan}, {toward the east}, NIV 41 Then Moses set aside three cities east of the Jordan, LEB 42 [in order for] {a manslayer} to flee there [who] has killed his neighbor {without intent} and was not hating him {previously}, and [so] he could flee to one of these cities {and be safe}. NIV 42 to which anyone who had killed a person could flee if he had unintentionally killed his neighbor without malice aforethought. He could flee into one of these cities and save his life. LEB 43 [He set apart] Bezer in the wilderness in the land of the plateau of the Reubenites; Ramoth in Gilead of the Gadites, and Golan in Bashan of the Manassites. NIV 43 The cities were these: Bezer in the desert plateau, for the Reubenites; Ramoth in Gilead, for the Gadites; and Golan in Bashan, for the Manassites. LEB 44 Now this [is] the law that Moses set {before} the {Israelites}; NIV 44 This is the law Moses set before the Israelites. LEB 45 these are the legal provisions and the rules and the regulations that Moses spoke to the {Israelites} {when they left Egypt}, NIV 45 These are the stipulations, decrees and laws Moses gave them when they came out of Egypt LEB 46 beyond the Jordan in the valley opposite Beth Peor in the land of Sihon the king of the Amorites, who [was] reigning in Heshbon [and] whom Moses and the {Israelites} defeated {when they came out of Egypt}. NIV 46 and were in the valley near Beth Peor east of the Jordan, in the land of Sihon king of the Amorites, who reigned in Heshbon and was defeated by Moses and the Israelites as they came out of Egypt. LEB 47 And [so] they took possession of his land and the land of Og king of Bashan, the two kings of the Amorites who [were] beyond the Jordan, {eastward}, NIV 47 They took possession of his land and the land of Og king of Bashan, the two Amorite kings east of the Jordan. LEB 48 from Aroer, which [is] on the bank of the wadi of Arnon and as far as Mount Sirion; that [is], Hermon, NIV 48 This land extended from Aroer on the rim of the Arnon Gorge to Mount Siyon (that is, Hermon), LEB 49 and all [of] the Arabah beyond the Jordan, eastward, and as far as the Sea of the Arabah under the slopes of Pisgah. NIV 49 and included all the Arabah east of the Jordan, as far as the Sea of the Arabah, below the slopes of Pisgah.
