Deuteronomy 4:15-40

NLT 15 “But be very careful! You did not see the ’s form on the day he spoke to you from the heart of the fire at Mount Sinai. NIV 15 You saw no form of any kind the day the LORD spoke to you at Horeb out of the fire. Therefore watch yourselves very carefully, NLT 16 So do not corrupt yourselves by making an idol in any form—whether of a man or a woman, NIV 16 so that you do not become corrupt and make for yourselves an idol, an image of any shape, whether formed like a man or a woman, NLT 17 an animal on the ground, a bird in the sky, NIV 17 or like any animal on earth or any bird that flies in the air, NLT 18 a small animal that scurries along the ground, or a fish in the deepest sea. NIV 18 or like any creature that moves along the ground or any fish in the waters below. NLT 19 And when you look up into the sky and see the sun, moon, and stars—all the forces of heaven—don’t be seduced into worshiping them. The your God gave them to all the peoples of the earth. NIV 19 And when you look up to the sky and see the sun, the moon and the stars--all the heavenly array--do not be enticed into bowing down to them and worshiping things the LORD your God has apportioned to all the nations under heaven. NLT 20 Remember that the rescued you from the iron-smelting furnace of Egypt in order to make you his very own people and his special possession, which is what you are today. NIV 20 But as for you, the LORD took you and brought you out of the iron-smelting furnace, out of Egypt, to be the people of his inheritance, as you now are. NLT 21 “But the was angry with me because of you. He vowed that I would not cross the Jordan River into the good land the your God is giving you as your special possession. NIV 21 The LORD was angry with me because of you, and he solemnly swore that I would not cross the Jordan and enter the good land the LORD your God is giving you as your inheritance. NLT 22 You will cross the Jordan to occupy the land, but I will not. Instead, I will die here on the east side of the river. NIV 22 I will die in this land; I will not cross the Jordan; but you are about to cross over and take possession of that good land. NLT 23 So be careful not to break the covenant the your God has made with you. Do not make idols of any shape or form, for the your God has forbidden this. NIV 23 Be careful not to forget the covenant of the LORD your God that he made with you; do not make for yourselves an idol in the form of anything the LORD your God has forbidden. NLT 24 The your God is a devouring fire; he is a jealous God. NIV 24 For the LORD your God is a consuming fire, a jealous God. NLT 25 “In the future, when you have children and grandchildren and have lived in the land a long time, do not corrupt yourselves by making idols of any kind. This is evil in the sight of the your God and will arouse his anger. NIV 25 After you have had children and grandchildren and have lived in the land a long time--if you then become corrupt and make any kind of idol, doing evil in the eyes of the LORD your God and provoking him to anger, NLT 26 “Today I call on heaven and earth as witnesses against you. If you break my covenant, you will quickly disappear from the land you are crossing the Jordan to occupy. You will live there only a short time; then you will be utterly destroyed. NIV 26 I call heaven and earth as witnesses against you this day that you will quickly perish from the land that you are crossing the Jordan to possess. You will not live there long but will certainly be destroyed. NLT 27 For the will scatter you among the nations, where only a few of you will survive. NIV 27 The LORD will scatter you among the peoples, and only a few of you will survive among the nations to which the LORD will drive you. NLT 28 There, in a foreign land, you will worship idols made from wood and stone—gods that neither see nor hear nor eat nor smell. NIV 28 There you will worship man-made gods of wood and stone, which cannot see or hear or eat or smell. NLT 29 But from there you will search again for the your God. And if you search for him with all your heart and soul, you will find him. NIV 29 But if from there you seek the LORD your God, you will find him if you look for him with all your heart and with all your soul. NLT 30 “In the distant future, when you are suffering all these things, you will finally return to the your God and listen to what he tells you. NIV 30 When you are in distress and all these things have happened to you, then in later days you will return to the LORD your God and obey him. NLT 31 For the your God is a merciful God; he will not abandon you or destroy you or forget the solemn covenant he made with your ancestors. NIV 31 For the LORD your God is a merciful God; he will not abandon or destroy you or forget the covenant with your forefathers, which he confirmed to them by oath. NLT 32 “Now search all of history, from the time God created people on the earth until now, and search from one end of the heavens to the other. Has anything as great as this ever been seen or heard before? NIV 32 Ask now about the former days, long before your time, from the day God created man on the earth; ask from one end of the heavens to the other. Has anything so great as this ever happened, or has anything like it ever been heard of ? NLT 33 Has any nation ever heard the voice of God speaking from fire—as you did—and survived? NIV 33 Has any other people heard the voice of God speaking out of fire, as you have, and lived? NLT 34 Has any other god dared to take a nation for himself out of another nation by means of trials, miraculous signs, wonders, war, a strong hand, a powerful arm, and terrifying acts? Yet that is what the your God did for you in Egypt, right before your eyes. NIV 34 Has any god ever tried to take for himself one nation out of another nation, by testings, by miraculous signs and wonders, by war, by a mighty hand and an outstretched arm, or by great and awesome deeds, like all the things the LORD your God did for you in Egypt before your very eyes? NLT 35 “He showed you these things so you would know that the is God and there is no other. NIV 35 You were shown these things so that you might know that the LORD is God; besides him there is no other. NLT 36 He let you hear his voice from heaven so he could instruct you. He let you see his great fire here on earth so he could speak to you from it. NIV 36 From heaven he made you hear his voice to discipline you. On earth he showed you his great fire, and you heard his words from out of the fire. NLT 37 Because he loved your ancestors, he chose to bless their descendants, and he personally brought you out of Egypt with a great display of power. NIV 37 Because he loved your forefathers and chose their descendants after them, he brought you out of Egypt by his Presence and his great strength, NLT 38 He drove out nations far greater than you, so he could bring you in and give you their land as your special possession, as it is today. NIV 38 to drive out before you nations greater and stronger than you and to bring you into their land to give it to you for your inheritance, as it is today. NLT 39 “So remember this and keep it firmly in mind: The is God both in heaven and on earth, and there is no other. NIV 39 Acknowledge and take to heart this day that the LORD is God in heaven above and on the earth below. There is no other. NLT 40 If you obey all the decrees and commands I am giving you today, all will be well with you and your children. I am giving you these instructions so you will enjoy a long life in the land the your God is giving you for all time.” NIV 40 Keep his decrees and commands, which I am giving you today, so that it may go well with you and your children after you and that you may live long in the land the LORD your God gives you for all time.
