Deuteronomy 7

NLT 1 "When the LORD your God brings you into the land you are about to enter and occupy, he will clear away many nations ahead of you: the Hittites, Girgashites, Amorites, Canaanites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites. These seven nations are all more powerful than you. NIV 1 When the LORD your God brings you into the land you are entering to possess and drives out before you many nations--the Hittites, Girgashites, Amorites, Canaanites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites, seven nations larger and stronger than you-- NLT 2 When the LORD your God hands these nations over to you and you conquer them, you must completely destroy them. Make no treaties with them and show them no mercy. NIV 2 and when the LORD your God has delivered them over to you and you have defeated them, then you must destroy them totally. Make no treaty with them, and show them no mercy. NLT 3 Do not intermarry with them, and don't let your daughters and sons marry their sons and daughters. NIV 3 Do not intermarry with them. Do not give your daughters to their sons or take their daughters for your sons, NLT 4 They will lead your young people away from me to worship other gods. Then the anger of the LORD will burn against you, and he will destroy you. NIV 4 for they will turn your sons away from following me to serve other gods, and the LORD's anger will burn against you and will quickly destroy you. NLT 5 Instead, you must break down their pagan altars and shatter their sacred pillars. Cut down their Asherah poles and burn their idols. NIV 5 This is what you are to do to them: Break down their altars, smash their sacred stones, cut down their Asherah poles and burn their idols in the fire. NLT 6 For you are a holy people, who belong to the LORD your God. Of all the people on earth, the LORD your God has chosen you to be his own special treasure. NIV 6 For you are a people holy to the LORD your God. The LORD your God has chosen you out of all the peoples on the face of the earth to be his people, his treasured possession. NLT 7 "The LORD did not choose you and lavish his love on you because you were larger or greater than other nations, for you were the smallest of all nations! NIV 7 The LORD did not set his affection on you and choose you because you were more numerous than other peoples, for you were the fewest of all peoples. NLT 8 It was simply because the LORD loves you, and because he was keeping the oath he had sworn to your ancestors. That is why the LORD rescued you with such amazing power from your slavery under Pharaoh in Egypt. NIV 8 But it was because the LORD loved you and kept the oath he swore to your forefathers that he brought you out with a mighty hand and redeemed you from the land of slavery, from the power of Pharaoh king of Egypt. NLT 9 Understand, therefore, that the LORD your God is indeed God. He is the faithful God who keeps his covenant for a thousand generations and constantly loves those who love him and obey his commands. NIV 9 Know therefore that the LORD your God is God; he is the faithful God, keeping his covenant of love to a thousand generations of those who love him and keep his commands. NLT 10 But he does not hesitate to punish and destroy those who hate him. NIV 10 But those who hate him he will repay to their face by destruction; he will not be slow to repay to their face those who hate him. NLT 11 Therefore, obey all these commands, laws, and regulations I am giving you today. NIV 11 Therefore, take care to follow the commands, decrees and laws I give you today. NLT 12 "If you listen to these regulations and obey them faithfully, the LORD your God will keep his covenant of unfailing love with you, as he solemnly promised your ancestors. NIV 12 If you pay attention to these laws and are careful to follow them, then the LORD your God will keep his covenant of love with you, as he swore to your forefathers. NLT 13 He will love you and bless you and make you into a great nation. He will give you many children and give fertility to your land and your animals. When you arrive in the land he swore to give your ancestors, you will have large crops of grain, grapes, and olives, and great herds of cattle, sheep, and goats. NIV 13 He will love you and bless you and increase your numbers. He will bless the fruit of your womb, the crops of your land--your grain, new wine and oil--the calves of your herds and the lambs of your flocks in the land that he swore to your forefathers to give you. NLT 14 You will be blessed above all the nations of the earth. None of your men or women will be childless, and all your livestock will bear young. NIV 14 You will be blessed more than any other people; none of your men or women will be childless, nor any of your livestock without young. NLT 15 And the LORD will protect you from all sickness. He will not let you suffer from the terrible diseases you knew in Egypt, but he will bring them all on your enemies! NIV 15 The LORD will keep you free from every disease. He will not inflict on you the horrible diseases you knew in Egypt, but he will inflict them on all who hate you. NLT 16 "You must destroy all the nations the LORD your God hands over to you. Show them no mercy and do not worship their gods. If you do, they will trap you. NIV 16 You must destroy all the peoples the LORD your God gives over to you. Do not look on them with pity and do not serve their gods, for that will be a snare to you. NLT 17 Perhaps you will think to yourselves, 'How can we ever conquer these nations that are so much more powerful than we are?' NIV 17 You may say to yourselves, "These nations are stronger than we are. How can we drive them out?" NLT 18 But don't be afraid of them! Just remember what the LORD your God did to Pharaoh and to all the land of Egypt. NIV 18 But do not be afraid of them; remember well what the LORD your God did to Pharaoh and to all Egypt. NLT 19 Remember the great terrors the LORD your God sent against them. You saw it all with your own eyes! And remember the miraculous signs and wonders, and the amazing power he used when he brought you out of Egypt. The LORD your God will use this same power against the people you fear. NIV 19 You saw with your own eyes the great trials, the miraculous signs and wonders, the mighty hand and outstretched arm, with which the LORD your God brought you out. The LORD your God will do the same to all the peoples you now fear. NLT 20 And then the LORD your God will send hornets to drive out the few survivors still hiding from you! NIV 20 Moreover, the LORD your God will send the hornet among them until even the survivors who hide from you have perished. NLT 21 "No, do not be afraid of those nations, for the LORD your God is among you, and he is a great and awesome God. NIV 21 Do not be terrified by them, for the LORD your God, who is among you, is a great and awesome God. NLT 22 The LORD your God will drive those nations out ahead of you little by little. You will not clear them away all at once, for if you did, the wild animals would multiply too quickly for you. NIV 22 The LORD your God will drive out those nations before you, little by little. You will not be allowed to eliminate them all at once, or the wild animals will multiply around you. NLT 23 But the LORD your God will hand them over to you. He will throw them into complete confusion until they are destroyed. NIV 23 But the LORD your God will deliver them over to you, throwing them into great confusion until they are destroyed. NLT 24 He will put their kings in your power, and you will erase their names from the face of the earth. No one will be able to stand against you, and you will destroy them all. NIV 24 He will give their kings into your hand, and you will wipe out their names from under heaven. No one will be able to stand up against you; you will destroy them. NLT 25 "You must burn their idols in fire, and do not desire the silver or gold with which they are made. Do not take it or it will become a snare to you, for it is detestable to the LORD your God. NIV 25 The images of their gods you are to burn in the fire. Do not covet the silver and gold on them, and do not take it for yourselves, or you will be ensnared by it, for it is detestable to the LORD your God. NLT 26 Do not bring any detestable objects into your home, for then you will be set apart for destruction just like them. You must utterly detest such things, for they are set apart for destruction. NIV 26 Do not bring a detestable thing into your house or you, like it, will be set apart for destruction. Utterly abhor and detest it, for it is set apart for destruction.
