Ecclesiastes 3:16-22

NRS 16 Moreover I saw under the sun that in the place of justice, wickedness was there, and in the place of righteousness, wickedness was there as well. NIV 16 And I saw something else under the sun: In the place of judgment--wickedness was there, in the place of justice--wickedness was there. NRS 17 I said in my heart, God will judge the righteous and the wicked, for he has appointed a time for every matter, and for every work. NIV 17 I thought in my heart, "God will bring to judgment both the righteous and the wicked, for there will be a time for every activity, a time for every deed." NRS 18 I said in my heart with regard to human beings that God is testing them to show that they are but animals. NIV 18 I also thought, "As for men, God tests them so that they may see that they are like the animals. NRS 19 For the fate of humans and the fate of animals is the same; as one dies, so dies the other. They all have the same breath, and humans have no advantage over the animals; for all is vanity. NIV 19 Man's fate is like that of the animals; the same fate awaits them both: As one dies, so dies the other. All have the same breath; man has no advantage over the animal. Everything is meaningless. NRS 20 All go to one place; all are from the dust, and all turn to dust again. NIV 20 All go to the same place; all come from dust, and to dust all return. NRS 21 Who knows whether the human spirit goes upward and the spirit of animals goes downward to the earth? NIV 21 Who knows if the spirit of man rises upward and if the spirit of the animal goes down into the earth?" NRS 22 So I saw that there is nothing better than that all should enjoy their work, for that is their lot; who can bring them to see what will be after them? NIV 22 So I saw that there is nothing better for a man than to enjoy his work, because that is his lot. For who can bring him to see what will happen after him?
