Ephesians 5

CJB 1 So imitate God, as his dear children; NIV 1 Be imitators of God, therefore, as dearly loved children CJB 2 and live a life of love, just as also the Messiah loved us, indeed, on our behalf gave himself up as an offering, as a slaughtered sacrifice to God with a pleasing fragrance. NIV 2 and live a life of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God. CJB 3 Among you there should not even be mentioned sexual immorality, or any kind of impurity, or greed; these are utterly inappropriate for God's holy people. NIV 3 But among you there must not be even a hint of sexual immorality, or of any kind of impurity, or of greed, because these are improper for God's holy people. CJB 4 Also out of place are obscenity and stupid talk or coarse language; instead, you should be giving thanks. NIV 4 Nor should there be obscenity, foolish talk or coarse joking, which are out of place, but rather thanksgiving. CJB 5 For of this you can be sure: every sexually immoral, impure or greedy person - that is, every idol-worshipper - has no share in the Kingdom of the Messiah and of God. NIV 5 For of this you can be sure: No immoral, impure or greedy person--such a man is an idolater--has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God. CJB 6 Let no one deceive you with empty talk; for it is because of these things that God's judgment is coming on those who disobey him. NIV 6 Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of such things God's wrath comes on those who are disobedient. CJB 7 So don't become partners with them! NIV 7 Therefore do not be partners with them. CJB 8 For you used to be darkness; but now, united with the Lord, you are light. Live like children of light, NIV 8 For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light CJB 9 for the fruit of the light is in every kind of goodness, rightness and truth - NIV 9 (for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness and truth) CJB 10 try to determine what will please the Lord. NIV 10 and find out what pleases the Lord. CJB 11 Have nothing to do with the deeds produced by darkness, but instead expose them, NIV 11 Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them. CJB 12 for it is shameful even to speak of the things these people do in secret. NIV 12 For it is shameful even to mention what the disobedient do in secret. CJB 13 But everything exposed to the light is revealed clearly for what it is, NIV 13 But everything exposed by the light becomes visible, CJB 14 since anything revealed is a light. This is why it says, "Get up, sleeper! Arise from the dead, and the Messiah will shine on you!" NIV 14 for it is light that makes everything visible. This is why it is said: "Wake up, O sleeper, rise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you." CJB 15 Therefore, pay careful attention to how you conduct your life - live wisely, not unwisely. NIV 15 Be very careful, then, how you live--not as unwise but as wise, CJB 16 Use your time well, for these are evil days. NIV 16 making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. CJB 17 So don't be foolish, but try to understand what the will of the Lord is. NIV 17 Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord's will is. CJB 18 Don't get drunk with wine, because it makes you lose control. Instead, keep on being filled with the Spirit - NIV 18 Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit. CJB 19 sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs to each other; sing to the Lord and make music in your heart to him; NIV 19 Speak to one another with psalms, hymns and spiritual songs. Sing and make music in your heart to the Lord, CJB 20 always give thanks for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Yeshua the Messiah. NIV 20 always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. CJB 21 Submit to one another in fear of the Messiah. NIV 21 Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ. CJB 22 Wives should submit to their husbands as they do to the Lord; NIV 22 Wives, submit to your husbands as to the Lord. CJB 23 because the husband is head of the wife, just as the Messiah, as head of the Messianic Community, is himself the one who keeps the body safe. NIV 23 For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Savior. CJB 24 Just as the Messianic Community submits to the Messiah, so also wives should submit to their husbands in everything. NIV 24 Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit to their husbands in everything. CJB 25 As for husbands, love your wives, just as the Messiah loved the Messianic Community, indeed, gave himself up on its behalf, NIV 25 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her CJB 26 in order to set it apart for God, making it clean through immersion in the mikveh, so to speak, NIV 26 to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word, CJB 27 in order to present the Messianic Community to himself as a bride to be proud of, without a spot, wrinkle or any such thing, but holy and without defect. NIV 27 and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless. CJB 28 This is how husbands ought to love their wives - like their own bodies; for the man who loves his wife is loving himself. NIV 28 In this same way, husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. CJB 29 Why, no one ever hated his own flesh! On the contrary, he feeds it well and takes care of it, just as the Messiah does the Messianic Community, NIV 29 After all, no one ever hated his own body, but he feeds and cares for it, just as Christ does the church-- CJB 30 because we are parts of his Body. NIV 30 for we are members of his body. CJB 31 "Therefore a man will leave his father and mother and remain with his wife, and the two will become one."f NIV 31 "For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh." CJB 32 There is profound truth hidden here, which I say concerns the Messiah and the Messianic Community. NIV 32 This is a profound mystery--but I am talking about Christ and the church. CJB 33 However, the text also applies to each of you individually: let each man love his wife as he does himself, and see that the wife respects her husband. NIV 33 However, each one of you also must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband.
