Ephesians 5

DBY 1 Be ye therefore imitators of God, as beloved children, NIV 1 Be imitators of God, therefore, as dearly loved children DBY 2 and walk in love, even as the Christ loved us, and delivered himself up for us, an offering and sacrifice to God for a sweet-smelling savour. NIV 2 and live a life of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God. DBY 3 But fornication and all uncleanness or unbridled lust, let it not be even named among you, as it becomes saints; NIV 3 But among you there must not be even a hint of sexual immorality, or of any kind of impurity, or of greed, because these are improper for God's holy people. DBY 4 and filthiness and foolish talking, or jesting, which are not convenient; but rather thanksgiving. NIV 4 Nor should there be obscenity, foolish talk or coarse joking, which are out of place, but rather thanksgiving. DBY 5 For this ye are [well] informed of, knowing that no fornicator, or unclean person, or person of unbridled lust, who is an idolater, has inheritance in the kingdom of the Christ and God. NIV 5 For of this you can be sure: No immoral, impure or greedy person--such a man is an idolater--has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God. DBY 6 Let no one deceive you with vain words, for on account of these things the wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience. NIV 6 Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of such things God's wrath comes on those who are disobedient. DBY 7 Be not ye therefore fellow-partakers with them; NIV 7 Therefore do not be partners with them. DBY 8 for ye were once darkness, but now light in [the] Lord; walk as children of light, NIV 8 For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light DBY 9 (for the fruit of the light [is] in all goodness and righteousness and truth,) NIV 9 (for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness and truth) DBY 10 proving what is agreeable to the Lord; NIV 10 and find out what pleases the Lord. DBY 11 and do not have fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather also reprove [them], NIV 11 Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them. DBY 12 for the things that are done by them in secret it is shameful even to say. NIV 12 For it is shameful even to mention what the disobedient do in secret. DBY 13 But all things having their true character exposed by the light are made manifest; for that which makes everything manifest is light. NIV 13 But everything exposed by the light becomes visible, DBY 14 Wherefore he says, Wake up, [thou] that sleepest, and arise up from among the dead, and the Christ shall shine upon thee. NIV 14 for it is light that makes everything visible. This is why it is said: "Wake up, O sleeper, rise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you." DBY 15 See therefore how ye walk carefully, not as unwise but as wise, NIV 15 Be very careful, then, how you live--not as unwise but as wise, DBY 16 redeeming the time, because the days are evil. NIV 16 making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. DBY 17 For this reason be not foolish, but understanding what [is] the will of the Lord. NIV 17 Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord's will is. DBY 18 And be not drunk with wine, in which is debauchery; but be filled with the Spirit, NIV 18 Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit. DBY 19 speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and chanting with your heart to the Lord; NIV 19 Speak to one another with psalms, hymns and spiritual songs. Sing and make music in your heart to the Lord, DBY 20 giving thanks at all times for all things to him [who is] God and [the] Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, NIV 20 always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. DBY 21 submitting yourselves to one another in [the] fear of Christ. NIV 21 Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ. DBY 22 Wives, [submit yourselves] to your own husbands, as to the Lord, NIV 22 Wives, submit to your husbands as to the Lord. DBY 23 for a husband is head of the wife, as also the Christ [is] head of the assembly. *He* [is] Saviour of the body. NIV 23 For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Savior. DBY 24 But even as the assembly is subjected to the Christ, so also wives to their own husbands in everything. NIV 24 Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit to their husbands in everything. DBY 25 Husbands, love your own wives, even as the Christ also loved the assembly, and has delivered himself up for it, NIV 25 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her DBY 26 in order that he might sanctify it, purifying [it] by the washing of water by [the] word, NIV 26 to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word, DBY 27 that *he* might present the assembly to himself glorious, having no spot, or wrinkle, or any of such things; but that it might be holy and blameless. NIV 27 and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless. DBY 28 So ought men also to love their own wives as their own bodies: he that loves his own wife loves himself. NIV 28 In this same way, husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. DBY 29 For no one has ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, even as also the Christ the assembly: NIV 29 After all, no one ever hated his own body, but he feeds and cares for it, just as Christ does the church-- DBY 30 for we are members of his body; [we are of his flesh, and of his bones.] NIV 30 for we are members of his body. DBY 31 Because of this a man shall leave his father and mother, and shall be united to his wife, and the two shall be one flesh. NIV 31 "For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh." DBY 32 This mystery is great, but *I* speak as to Christ, and as to the assembly. NIV 32 This is a profound mystery--but I am talking about Christ and the church. DBY 33 But *ye* also, every one of you, let each so love his own wife as himself; but as to the wife [I speak] that she may fear the husband. NIV 33 However, each one of you also must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband.
