GOD'S WORD Translation

New International Version

Ephesians 5

GW 1 Imitate God, since you are the children he loves. NIV 1 Be imitators of God, therefore, as dearly loved children GW 2 Live in love as Christ also loved us. He gave his life for us as an offering and sacrifice, a soothing aroma to God. NIV 2 and live a life of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God. GW 3 Don't let sexual sin, perversion of any kind, or greed even be mentioned among you. This is not appropriate behavior for God's holy people. NIV 3 But among you there must not be even a hint of sexual immorality, or of any kind of impurity, or of greed, because these are improper for God's holy people. GW 4 It's not right that dirty stories, foolish talk, or obscene jokes should be mentioned among you either. Instead, give thanks [to God]. NIV 4 Nor should there be obscenity, foolish talk or coarse joking, which are out of place, but rather thanksgiving. GW 5 You know very well that no person who is involved in sexual sin, perversion, or greed (which means worshiping wealth) can have any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God. NIV 5 For of this you can be sure: No immoral, impure or greedy person--such a man is an idolater--has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God. GW 6 Don't let anyone deceive you with meaningless words. It is because of sins like these that God's anger comes to those who refuse to obey him. NIV 6 Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of such things God's wrath comes on those who are disobedient. GW 7 Don't be partners with them. NIV 7 Therefore do not be partners with them. GW 8 Once you lived in the dark, but now the Lord has filled you with light. Live as children who have light. NIV 8 For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light GW 9 Light produces everything that is good, that has God's approval, and that is true. NIV 9 (for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness and truth) GW 10 Determine which things please the Lord. NIV 10 and find out what pleases the Lord. GW 11 Have nothing to do with the useless works that darkness produces. Instead, expose them for what they are. NIV 11 Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them. GW 12 It is shameful to talk about what some people do in secret. NIV 12 For it is shameful even to mention what the disobedient do in secret. GW 13 Light exposes the true character of everything NIV 13 But everything exposed by the light becomes visible, GW 14 because light makes everything easy to see. That's why it says: "Wake up, sleeper! Rise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you." NIV 14 for it is light that makes everything visible. This is why it is said: "Wake up, O sleeper, rise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you." GW 15 So then, be very careful how you live. Don't live like foolish people but like wise people. NIV 15 Be very careful, then, how you live--not as unwise but as wise, GW 16 Make the most of your opportunities because these are evil days. NIV 16 making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. GW 17 So don't be foolish, but understand what the Lord wants. NIV 17 Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord's will is. GW 18 Don't get drunk on wine, which leads to wild living. Instead, be filled with the Spirit NIV 18 Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit. GW 19 by reciting psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs for your own good. Sing and make music to the Lord with your hearts. NIV 19 Speak to one another with psalms, hymns and spiritual songs. Sing and make music in your heart to the Lord, GW 20 Always thank God the Father for everything in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. NIV 20 always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. GW 21 Place yourselves under each other's authority out of respect for Christ. NIV 21 Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ. GW 22 Wives, place yourselves under your husbands' authority as you have placed yourselves under the Lord's authority. NIV 22 Wives, submit to your husbands as to the Lord. GW 23 The husband is the head of his wife as Christ is the head of the church. It is his body, and he is its Savior. NIV 23 For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Savior. GW 24 As the church is under Christ's authority, so wives are under their husbands' authority in everything. NIV 24 Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit to their husbands in everything. GW 25 Husbands, love your wives as Christ loved the church and gave his life for it. NIV 25 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her GW 26 He did this to make the church holy by cleansing it, washing it using water along with spoken words. NIV 26 to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word, GW 27 Then he could present it to himself as a glorious church, without any kind of stain or wrinkle--holy and without faults. NIV 27 and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless. GW 28 So husbands must love their wives as they love their own bodies. A man who loves his wife loves himself. NIV 28 In this same way, husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. GW 29 No one ever hated his own body. Instead, he feeds and takes care of it, as Christ takes care of the church. NIV 29 After all, no one ever hated his own body, but he feeds and cares for it, just as Christ does the church-- GW 30 We are parts of his body. NIV 30 for we are members of his body. GW 31 That's why a man will leave his father and mother and be united with his wife, and the two will be one. NIV 31 "For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh." GW 32 This is a great mystery. (I'm talking about Christ's relationship to the church.) NIV 32 This is a profound mystery--but I am talking about Christ and the church. GW 33 But every husband must love his wife as he loves himself, and wives should respect their husbands. NIV 33 However, each one of you also must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband.
