Ephesians 5

LEB 1 Therefore become imitators of God, as beloved children, NIV 1 Be imitators of God, therefore, as dearly loved children LEB 2 and live in love, just as also Christ loved us, and gave himself for us an offering and sacrifice to God for a fragrant smell. NIV 2 and live a life of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God. LEB 3 But sexual immorality, and all uncleanness, or greediness, must not even be named among you (as is fitting for saints), NIV 3 But among you there must not be even a hint of sexual immorality, or of any kind of impurity, or of greed, because these are improper for God's holy people. LEB 4 and obscenity, and foolish talk, or coarse jesting (which [are] not proper), but rather thanksgiving. NIV 4 Nor should there be obscenity, foolish talk or coarse joking, which are out of place, but rather thanksgiving. LEB 5 For this you know {for certain}, that every sexually immoral [person], or unclean [person], or greedy [person] (who is an idolater), does not have an inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and God. NIV 5 For of this you can be sure: No immoral, impure or greedy person--such a man is an idolater--has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God. LEB 6 Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of these [things] the wrath of God is coming on the sons of disobedience. NIV 6 Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of such things God's wrath comes on those who are disobedient. LEB 7 Therefore do not be sharers with them, NIV 7 Therefore do not be partners with them. LEB 8 for you were formerly darkness, but now [you are] light in the Lord. Live like children of light NIV 8 For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light LEB 9 (for the fruit of the light [is] in all goodness and righteousness and truth), NIV 9 (for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness and truth) LEB 10 trying to learn what is well-pleasing to the Lord. NIV 10 and find out what pleases the Lord. LEB 11 And do not participate in the unfruitful deeds of darkness, but rather even expose [them]. NIV 11 Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them. LEB 12 For it is shameful even to speak [about] the things being [done] by them in secret, NIV 12 For it is shameful even to mention what the disobedient do in secret. LEB 13 but all [things] exposed by the light are made visible, NIV 13 But everything exposed by the light becomes visible, LEB 14 for everything made visible is light. Therefore it says, Wake up, sleeper, and rise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you.<note: A quotation of unknown origin with possible allusions to Isa 26:19, 51:17, 52:1, 60:1> NIV 14 for it is light that makes everything visible. This is why it is said: "Wake up, O sleeper, rise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you." LEB 15 Therefore, consider carefully how you live, not as unwise but as wise, NIV 15 Be very careful, then, how you live--not as unwise but as wise, LEB 16 making the most of the time because the days are evil. NIV 16 making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. LEB 17 Because of this do not become foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord [is]. NIV 17 Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord's will is. LEB 18 And do not be drunk with wine (in which is dissipation), but be filled by the Spirit, NIV 18 Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit. LEB 19 speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and singing praise in your heart to the Lord, NIV 19 Speak to one another with psalms, hymns and spiritual songs. Sing and make music in your heart to the Lord, LEB 20 giving thanks always for all [things] in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to the God and Father, NIV 20 always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. LEB 21 being subject to one another {out of reverence for} Christ NIV 21 Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ. LEB 22 --wives to their own husbands as to the Lord, NIV 22 Wives, submit to your husbands as to the Lord. LEB 23 because [the] husband is [the] head of the wife, as also Christ [is the] head of the church (he himself [being the] Savior of the body). NIV 23 For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Savior. LEB 24 But as the church is subject to Christ, thus also wives [should be subject] to their husbands in everything. NIV 24 Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit to their husbands in everything. LEB 25 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for her; NIV 25 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her LEB 26 in order that he might sanctify her by cleansing [her] with the washing of water by the word; NIV 26 to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word, LEB 27 in order that he might present to himself the church glorious, not having a spot or wrinkle or any such [thing], but that she may be holy and blameless. NIV 27 and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless. LEB 28 Thus also husbands ought to love their own wives as their own bodies. The one who loves his own wife loves himself. NIV 28 In this same way, husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. LEB 29 For no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as also Christ [does] the church, NIV 29 After all, no one ever hated his own body, but he feeds and cares for it, just as Christ does the church-- LEB 30 because we are members of his body. NIV 30 for we are members of his body. LEB 31 "For this [reason] a man will leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two will become one flesh." NIV 31 "For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh." LEB 32 (This mystery is great, but I am speaking with reference to Christ and the church.) NIV 32 This is a profound mystery--but I am talking about Christ and the church. LEB 33 Only you also, each one [of you], must thus love his own wife as himself, and the wife {must respect} her husband. NIV 33 However, each one of you also must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband.
