Ephesians 5

NCV 1 You are God's children whom he loves, so try to be like him. NIV 1 Be imitators of God, therefore, as dearly loved children NCV 2 Live a life of love just as Christ loved us and gave himself for us as a sweet-smelling offering and sacrifice to God. NIV 2 and live a life of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God. NCV 3 But there must be no sexual sin among you, or any kind of evil or greed. Those things are not right for God's holy people. NIV 3 But among you there must not be even a hint of sexual immorality, or of any kind of impurity, or of greed, because these are improper for God's holy people. NCV 4 Also, there must be no evil talk among you, and you must not speak foolishly or tell evil jokes. These things are not right for you. Instead, you should be giving thanks to God. NIV 4 Nor should there be obscenity, foolish talk or coarse joking, which are out of place, but rather thanksgiving. NCV 5 You can be sure of this: No one will have a place in the kingdom of Christ and of God who sins sexually, or does evil things, or is greedy. Anyone who is greedy is serving a false god. NIV 5 For of this you can be sure: No immoral, impure or greedy person--such a man is an idolater--has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God. NCV 6 Do not let anyone fool you by telling you things that are not true, because these things will bring God's anger on those who do not obey him. NIV 6 Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of such things God's wrath comes on those who are disobedient. NCV 7 So have nothing to do with them. NIV 7 Therefore do not be partners with them. NCV 8 In the past you were full of darkness, but now you are full of light in the Lord. So live like children who belong to the light. NIV 8 For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light NCV 9 Light brings every kind of goodness, right living, and truth. NIV 9 (for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness and truth) NCV 10 Try to learn what pleases the Lord. NIV 10 and find out what pleases the Lord. NCV 11 Have nothing to do with the things done in darkness, which are not worth anything. But show that they are wrong. NIV 11 Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them. NCV 12 It is shameful even to talk about what those people do in secret. NIV 12 For it is shameful even to mention what the disobedient do in secret. NCV 13 But the light makes all things easy to see, NIV 13 But everything exposed by the light becomes visible, NCV 14 and everything that is made easy to see can become light. This is why it is said: "Wake up, sleeper! Rise from death, and Christ will shine on you." NIV 14 for it is light that makes everything visible. This is why it is said: "Wake up, O sleeper, rise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you." NCV 15 So be very careful how you live. Do not live like those who are not wise, but live wisely. NIV 15 Be very careful, then, how you live--not as unwise but as wise, NCV 16 Use every chance you have for doing good, because these are evil times. NIV 16 making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. NCV 17 So do not be foolish but learn what the Lord wants you to do. NIV 17 Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord's will is. NCV 18 Do not be drunk with wine, which will ruin you, but be filled with the Spirit. NIV 18 Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit. NCV 19 Speak to each other with psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs, singing and making music in your hearts to the Lord. NIV 19 Speak to one another with psalms, hymns and spiritual songs. Sing and make music in your heart to the Lord, NCV 20 Always give thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. NIV 20 always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. NCV 21 Yield to obey each other because you respect Christ. NIV 21 Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ. NCV 22 Wives, yield to your husbands, as you do to the Lord, NIV 22 Wives, submit to your husbands as to the Lord. NCV 23 because the husband is the head of the wife, as Christ is the head of the church. And he is the Savior of the body, which is the church. NIV 23 For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Savior. NCV 24 As the church yields to Christ, so you wives should yield to your husbands in everything. NIV 24 Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit to their husbands in everything. NCV 25 Husbands, love your wives as Christ loved the church and gave himself for it NIV 25 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her NCV 26 to make it belong to God. Christ used the word to make the church clean by washing it with water. NIV 26 to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word, NCV 27 He died so that he could give the church to himself like a bride in all her beauty. He died so that the church could be pure and without fault, with no evil or sin or any other wrong thing in it. NIV 27 and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless. NCV 28 In the same way, husbands should love their wives as they love their own bodies. The man who loves his wife loves himself. NIV 28 In this same way, husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. NCV 29 No one ever hates his own body, but feeds and takes care of it. And that is what Christ does for the church, NIV 29 After all, no one ever hated his own body, but he feeds and cares for it, just as Christ does the church-- NCV 30 because we are parts of his body. NIV 30 for we are members of his body. NCV 31 The Scripture says, "So a man will leave his father and mother and be united with his wife, and the two will become one body." NIV 31 "For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh." NCV 32 That secret is very important -- I am talking about Christ and the church. NIV 32 This is a profound mystery--but I am talking about Christ and the church. NCV 33 But each one of you must love his wife as he loves himself, and a wife must respect her husband. NIV 33 However, each one of you also must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband.
